I was thinking about this very thing as a better alternative. So, if you ever have to pull out a cable or hose, these styrofoam pieces are trapped in the frame forever. That is the only concern I have. Can you pull them out? Maybe adding a wrapping a small ball of tape at one end to stop the foam sleeves from falling off the cable?

Wow, that would explain the rattle I've experienced on my new bike. Even though I think your solution is genius, I also have an idea for improvement. Instead of cutting the drilled foam pieces with a straight cut along its axis, cut them in a spiral pattern. You could use a carpet knife (or whatever you call the knives with disposable blades) and support the drilled foam piece with something inside of it while cutting. The spiral pattern allows you to twist the foam pieces onto the housing. Some manufacturers make cable housing protectors (those that prevent rubbing on the frame) this way, because this allows them to be fitted after the cables are installed (For those mechanics that tend to forget the protectors during installation).

A very simple way I've found of stopping the rattle is to locate which cable it is and then push/pull up/down to find a non rattling sweet spot. This obviously bends it away from the tube wall. Works every time. I watched your video showing the replacement of internal cables, which had an anti rattle sleeve round them. I just figured my bike rattled because they were too cheap to put such a sleeve in. :)

This is such a great idea! So many things that can creak, rattle, or squeak. Sometimes the onset is so gradual it goes unnoticed for a while until it gets worse. I've had headsets get loose, spokes loosen up, chains wear and rattle (on track bike), chainring bolts loosen and allow the chainring to run radially out of true accentuating chain rattle. Solution to apply shim to spider. So much better with all this found and fixed!

Great solution to an annouing problem. I previously had put tension on my hydro cable and then wedged it against the guide grommet. This is so much better.

I was just about to spray some insulating foam into a brazon hole, but I'd be worried about it keeping moisture above the foam within the frame. ;) I'm surprised that manufacturers don't put a conduit within the frames and stays. Even when internal cable routing was just making it to affordable bikes in the 90's, it seemed logical. My new/used Transition has a few extra noises I'm working out. Great video.

I was watching this is horror as I had the exact same question. I think the stuff is impossible to remove because it will most likely break into pieces if you want to remove it because you cannot compress it to get it out in the same way he got it in. Then if you ever need to replace the cable, it will be impossible because of the foam.

For Swedes, they are called "Bottningslist". :) But I will first test my current fix; Putting the cable under tension by using a cable tie on the top side ( around the cable). I pushed it as far I could downwards, and put a drop of rapid glue on it so it won't slide. I will test it soon, but it will be heavy winds this week.

If you want to eliminate chain slap vibration/noise you’ll want to take a look at the STFU chain guide…it’s actually just a loop of formed rubber attached to the chainstay. I suspect you would only need the DH version for your road bike small cassette. Respect.

Internal cable routing... my biggest gripe with the modern bikes. Looks great, but can cause so many issues and noises. Thank God some manufacturers only run the housing that stops when entering the frame, that way the cable is under tension inside the frame and can't touch anything... This is not the case with disc brakes unfortunately (another big gripe lol).

Usually, the only cables that rattle are the loose ones. So hydraulic hoses or Di2 wires... I use zip ties, because at least you know you'll get them back out if needed.

Thanks for the great video again. You allways have great ideas for several broblems. I don't have internal cable rattle but instead of that i have a gear shifter issue. One of my cycle (Kuota Kharma) have Dura Ace 9000 gear shifters and they make this annoying rattle when driving on a ruff road. Any ideas what to do with that broblem?

Dear OZ Cycle thank you again. Pretty close to what I decided to do. I have a question regarding your bike fit. From my perspective all your hoods are placed in a way that makes the upper plane (the part we put our palms in) are sloping downward. Is that true? Or is it camera’s angle? Is true, is it intentional? Or a side effect of other setting? In my case I can stand almost any increase in the handlebar drop or reach, as long as the hoods remain slightly upwards. In that way I can rest my wrists easily and without tension on the hoods.

hey, do you have a tip for me how to finally get the inside cables on my Enduro Bike quietly? I have tried a lot to tighten the cables to the maximum and attach a tie to the opening, with tape I also tried to tighten the cables, even the Jagwire housing damper I tried to lay in my frame, but the openings on my bike are too small to get these thick foam covers in.

Only downside is if that tube/cable needs to be replaced, you'll be stuck with foam inside of your frame potentially blocking the install of a new tube/cable.

You know what works well and basically cost peanuts? Nerf bullets... cut the tips and everything is there... foam and perfectly sized holes... you can buy 100 of them for like $13CAD. And they come in assorted colors :).

Kinks and friction shouldnt occur if installed correctly. Changingfrom Shimano to SRAM maybe but that requires new group completely...may as well have 2 bikes. Cassette size can be any , replace inner cable not outer.

You dont have to. When you replace outer cables, or change hoses, the guide you thread through will go through all those tubes as well. When you put the new ones in they will also go through.

I had this on a bike but it would only happen on large g-outs. And because the cable housing was normally held pretty well against the frame when it happened it was a heck of a snap. Scared the crap out of me as it really sounded like the frame was breaking in half, and normally no rattle.

Usually its ok but kangaroos have a habit of suddenly changing direction and jumping over a fence and onto the road in just 1 or 2 hops. We have had a few guys hit roos , one broke his collar bone and a rib. When we see them close by we slow down if descending.

I almost never have riders around me to annoy. I like riding alone because it's safer. I can't hear noises from my bike either because I listen to the beats in my earbuds. But instead of paying for that expensive foam tubing just put some zip ties strategically placed just like Shimano recommends when installing the wires for Di2 installation.
