In a world where many people are lost in identity issues, Mama Nike is so self-aware and self-assured that she knows who she is. She is an artist, a collector of arts, an entrepreneur, a mother to many, and above all, an African woman.
In the first episode of Spotlight with Bianca, Mama delved deep into the past and the process that made her the owner of the largest art gallery in Nigeria, Nike Arts Gallery.
And what is the use of sitting with elders if we don’t drink from their 'well' of experience? Mama spoke about the rate of divorce and the age-old concept of virginity before marriage.
Sitting with Mama is like riding in an old refurbished vintage car; it takes you round and round with the comfort of the old and the awareness of the present, capped with a reassuring smile that says, ‘I was yesterday, I am today, while tomorrow is in God’s hands’. Mama Nike Okundaye was born May 23, 1951 in Ogidi, Kogi State, in North-Central Nigeria, and was brought up amidst the Yoruba traditional weaving and dyeing as practiced in her home town.
Today, that little girl born in Kogi has grown to own the biggest arts gallery in Nigeria, if not West Africa.
