The Bible emphasizes that our giving should be a response from the heart, showing our trust and gratitude to God. Malachi 3:10 calls for bringing the "full tithe" into the storehouse, but it doesn’t specify whether this is gross or net. The New Testament speaks more broadly about generosity, encouraging believers to give with a joyful heart (2 Corinthians 9:7). Principle of First Fruits Some believers see the “first fruits” concept as a reason to tithe on gross income. Proverbs 3:9 says, "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops." The idea here is that our giving should reflect putting God first in our finances. Tithing on gross income can be one way of expressing that trust and prioritization. Practical Considerations Others feel that tithing on net income is more practical, especially if taxes or deductions cover essential needs or support their family. The Bible doesn’t specifically address modern taxation, so it leaves room for individual conviction on this point. Your Heart and Personal Conviction Since there isn’t a strict mandate, it’s important to approach it through prayer. Ask God to give you clarity and peace about your giving, aligning it with the gratitude and trust He desires. Guidance from the Holy Spirit Jesus taught that our giving should be from a sincere heart, led by the Holy Spirit, and not out of legalism or compulsion (Matthew 6:1-4). For many, tithing is part of a journey in trusting God as Provider. In the end, whether you decide to tithe on gross or net income, the most important thing is that you give in faith, trusting that God sees your heart and will bless your obedience and generosity.
