Stop Making Prequels

Andor justifies its existence way more than something like X-Men First Class. X-Men First Class takes away from the previous movies instead of adding to them. Also yeah the knowing the ending is a limitation, but limitations breed creativity. Funny that people forget that for prequels specifically. People forget that limitations may breed creativity, but it also produces crap as well. The best way to make a prequel is to use it to explore things that are different than what it’s a prequel to. Which is why the Star Wars prequels justified their existence even if they weren’t great films. They brought something new to the table the recontextualized the world.

Andor is good, but I said this to some friends just this week: “I can’t think of a single prequel that made the original story better or was made better by being a prequel.” The only exception is Life is Strange: Before the Storm-a surprisingly brilliant prequel to the original game that adds both insight and resonance.

Do a prequel is a nigthmate. Still, when you have talented people behind and infront of the camera, you can do wonders. Better Call Saul is amazing, Andor is good and is even better precisely because is good even being a prequel of a prequel setup. The godfather 2 is a prequel/sequel and is a masterclass. Metal gear solid 3: Snake eater is a complete text book prequel, and is arguably the best MG ever made. So yeah, prequels are not bad because they are prequels, they are usually bad because they are a product of a souless cashgrab mentallity that works wothout artistic consideration for the material at hand.

OK so Andor is way better than it has any right to be and does meaningfully enrich the worldbuilding of the Imperial era. But I think it's an exception that proves the rule. It's also brought down just a little by the knowledge that this gritty political conflict will have an easy out in the form of magical prophecies and laser swordfights.
