Many think that MAF is all about 180-age and always going slow. They say “do 80/20 instead” not knowing that MAF training includes hard training and uses the 80/20 principle during that phase. These are the people that don’t even take the time to read and understand what goes into MAF. Once you dive in and learn how successful athletes train, they all do pretty much the same thing, all under different names. I was drawn to the MAF concept because it involved not only training but also lifestyle. Training and lifestyle are one in the same.

Thanks Albert I appreciate that! I really like when you take the time to comment. I think it really helps other runners to hear from people that have gone through the process😊👍

Funny, I recall watching some of your videos years ago when I started and struggled with MAF. I gave upon it sooner. Or let's put it in another way. I actually read his book, went to a sports lab to test my lactate threshold. Figured out that I can add 10 bpm to the normal MAF calculation and I can run some faster sessions. It is in the book. Practically I converted to 80/20. Without intervals and tempo runs my VO2 max was continuously dropping. I improved my 10k by 1 minute after 4 months MAF, what I mainly attributed to better pacing my test run. My MAF times were actually getting slower over the months. I could run 10k at 6:20/km pace at the beginning (with 130bpm) and after 4 months I was happy if I managed it under 7:00/km. Evolution of an amateur, midlife runner: 1 - start running , always too fast 2 - discovers MAF and that's all he can talk about 3 - get's very frustrated with MAF 4 - makes marginal improvements 5 - discovers 80/20 - and never looks back Last time I followed a Garmin plan by Greg McMillan and improved more with less running time, lower mileage.

Well done. I'm happy you found what works for you and that you are seeing improvements :)

For me finding MAF has been a godsend. Being overweight and wanting a quick fix, I would over extend myself and get injured regularly. This led to severe demotivation. Since applying MAF basics with an slightly inaccurate fitbit 😊, it has forced me to run/walk a lot more and my injury rate has decreased significantly. This has lead me to be able to run 5km in about 45mins. This took me about 4 months to get to that point.

Yes, I’ve seen good gains with MAF over 10 months (about 2 min/km). I introduced speedwork in the last 2 months. I’ve seen improvement but I know (and have known) that my next breakthrough is absolutely my nutrition…I’ve actually seen improvement despite my (poor) nutrition….so here we go. This summer I’m committing to pumping up the greens and cutting back the delicious sugars. I know I need carbs and won’t cut them absolutely but improving my composition with my nutrition is what I need to level-up, 100%.

You for sure will see improvenent but the inconvenient i see is that as you are older you become more into the risk of injury adding speedwork in the last two years i did that and i got injured

I started low heart rate training. I didn't understand the concept. I made lots of mistakes. I was eating lots of sugary junk food. I was not managing stress. I lacked focus and discipline. I was running far too many miles for my level of fitness and for some odd reason I was not getting the results the program promised. I said this style of training is not what it's cracked up to be. I made lots of mistakes.

It sounds like you’ve had quite a journey with low heart rate training! It’s all about learning from those mistakes and adjusting your approach. Keep experimenting with what works for you!

MAF method def works. i started as a practically new runner with it 3 weeks ago, where i could do 5km in 10:30min/km pace. today i ran 6.7km at 9:29 min/km pace, so my pace has dropped by a hole min/km in only 3 weeks. even better before i did not enjoy running that much because i felt i had to go all out every time, and needed couple days to recover, wile i now feel fresh just an hour after done running, and i dont feel like im about to die every time. i also now run roughly 30-35km in a week which is much longer than I've ever been able to do before. on top of that, my weight has dropped 4kg (8,8lbs) in those 3 weeks as well, so a good start on getting it down where it should be. however what best of all for me, is that before i started running i got too hungry too quick, but now despite dropping weight rather quick, i barely eat compared to what i did before, and never feel particulary hungry anymore, even after being out running for an hour. i can just feel my sugar lvl in the blood are much more stable, and that my body to much higher degree are burning fat for fuel

That's amazing progress in just 3 weeks! Keep up the great work!

To be more effective Maffetone method. How many days a week and time in does days is better to train? How many hours a week. I was trainning 4 and i got stuck, i was Trainning 4 days. I dont know if i should start doing treshold or add i hour more to maf.

Maf method is way to high for me. I'm 33 years old, I'm healthy, I don't take any medication but my easy pace HR isbaround 130-138 bpm. 147 is waaay to high for me, more like a lower range of tempo session. I think I would get injured pretty fast if I ran most of my runs around that heart rate.
