I have these same habits. Not respecting guards. Giving grips. Relying on my defense. Letting people pass.

@Larz1000000 If I'm not mistaken, I think Eric Paulson was also at blue for a long time - maybe 7 years?

Struggling with these issues at the moment, so this is timely for me. 😂 Currently a mediocre blue belt, trying to suck less. Thanks guys!

You made it to blue belt...you have all the basics down...you're a force to be reckoned with in the real world.

My bad habit was definitely letting people close their guard too easily. I didn't realise it until we did a drill in which the only goal for the person on the bottom was to close their guard. If they got it closed... it was a reset. There were many occasions on which there was nothing stopping me from preventing them from owning that space... but i just let them have it entirely uncontested

This is very true when bad habits are pointed out by upper belts. I'm truly thankful l to have brown and black belts let me know what mistakes I'm making when rolling with them. JT makes a great comment on this. Upper Belts give us wisdom and feed back that us lower belts don't think about in the moment.

I wish more training partners and rolling partners would give more advice. I should ask more but a lot of times no one wants to say anything.

What I learned last night was a fist in the jaw and iccant eat properly today. I learnt some people are best avoided and some aren't. A good older Purple then practiced with me with me trying to get out of his guard. Still squashed but felt fun

Love the pod guys, you're hilarious and insightful. I think it's interesting that the issues you had even at purple are what I think a lot of people would think of as fundamental, I'd even say that things such as not allowing grips is something you should absolutely understand at white belt nowadays. Do you guys think that your issues back then are because BJJ just wasn't as established as it is now?

Letting the homies get their grips at the start of the roll is a HUGE mistake I have been making for a couple years now. Then I end up getting smashed the rest of the roll and I’m angry about them smashing me, when it all started because I didn’t hespect the grip fight .😂

The "works on white belts" can be valid if you are a lower belt. It's a progression. My over under pass works on all white belts and most blues in my gym. Then a brown belt kimuras me and tells me the pass is flawed. The principals I am employing aren't the problem. It's my execution
