Many many many moons ago when I was in the army and doing training in the fells and mountains we were told to start off cold. There wasn't really any fancy material back then so everything was cotton and wool. We would start yomping with a teeshirt and then go up to the army version of a rugby top if it was needed. Fast fell marching in the Lake District with full packs quickly had us sweating even if it was snowing. The only time we had to put a jacket on was when we stopped to cook up a bit of dinner from rations that came in tins instead of lightweight dehydrated food in plastic pouches. Peace

I'm not in the army yet but yes it's really almost the same for the army you just got 7 layers

Better not to sweat at all, really got to know your gear and yourself. Takes practice.

Absolutely. I run hot and sweat easily so use really light layers while on the move. Took some testing to get the system right for me.

If only for the fact if you've been hammer down all day finding yourself full of sweat at sundown ( in the mountains/desert where the temperature really drops). You could really end up FUBAR. Having had hypothermia, that's some fun sh$t.

@@BlazeYourOwnPath yeh, I always carried a summit jacket. That really did it’s job well at the end of a hike.

Synthetic Baselayer for winter is almost as bad as using cotton. Use wool or wool blend having minimum of 50% wool content.

I got no problem with it, getting dry very quick, comfortable

For really hard working, wool holds onto damp whilst thin synthetic layers will dry out as vapour evaporates through the layers

I find even the expensive wool versions itchy, so no thanks

Synthetic material is good for strenuous activities that's why all gym/running shirts are made of this this material.
