I had to present to 20+ people for the first time in forever because of Covid, and my voice started trembling and shaking throughout the whole presentation. I felt extremely embarrassed and the worst part is it wasn't even in person, it was online yet it still happened. Whenever I am not confident about presenting something, I get nervous. I also lost my train of thought and had to abruptly pause multiple times to look at my notes which made my voice tremble even more. I could just tell everyone was cringing or feeling awkward because that's what happens to me when someone else's voice starts to shake when presenting. The final nail in the coffin was when I was essentially sent a pity message by someone, which I appreciated, but confirmed to me that it was as bad as I thought. I think I have to admit at this point that I have social anxiety.
@voiceandspeech3 жыл бұрын
Gah! I'm sorry you had to go through that. It must have been a demoralizing experience. There were probably many factors at work, simultaneously, including your level of preparation and rehearsal, experience and confidence, sabotaging thoughts and personal stories, misplaced focus, lack of breath and vocal technique and so on. It's a complicated issue but not a hopeless one. There's probably not one single solution, but I would encourage you to pick one that would make the most difference in your situation and take action to address that issue. It will take time and focused effort but you can make noticeable progress. Some of my most committed students have had experiences like yours that served as a wake-up call, motivating them to take action, get training, and they've been able to turn that difficult experience into a success story.

@@voiceandspeech Thank you. I have a question though. Is there any way to practice speaking in front of a group of people without actually having to speak to a group of people? Or is it a matter where you have to because that’s the only real method in which you can gauge your progress?

@@advenco344 I think practicing in front of a video camera is pretty effective. It puts a bit of pressure on you without having to deal with real eyeballs. Eventually though, you'll have to find a way to get in front of a live audience. (Toastmasters is a good organization for that if you don't have other opportunities.) But take it in small steps. Your voice is very sensitive to stress, and all of us have been under a lot of stress over the past months. Be kind and patient with yourself. Beating yourself up only makes the situation worse. I just got back into in-person school and I get a lot of anxiety when put on the spot. I’m completely fine with talking to people 1 on 1 or a group of people I’m comfortable with. But when it’s a new group of students I don’t know or don’t feel comfortable with, I tend to become more reserved and a sense that they are very judgmental in a way... great tips tho! But when I get very anxious (like a panic attack) my mind is completely blank and the only thing I can think about is the thing making me anxious...it’s a indescribable feeling. I feel my heart dropping, almost blackout, I would think it’s the end of the world if I don’t get it over with..
@voiceandspeech3 жыл бұрын
That's the advantage of training. It enables you to notice the subtle signs of anxiety very early, when it's fairly easy to intervene and manage the response. The untrained person often misses the early warning signs and doesn't notice until it's advanced to the point where it's difficult to do something about it.

@voiceandspeech4 жыл бұрын
That's a very important point, and I feel your frustration. A 5-minute video can make it seem quick and easy., and it's not. You can't change your breathing habits just from watching a video. It takes time and practice, especially when you need to apply it in high-pressure situations. Don't give up because you can't make it work right away. Give it 3-6 months, maybe more, depending on the situation where you want to make it work. "Deep breathing" is almost a cliche in the speaking world but most people don't even know how that feels, let alone how to apply it when they're feeling under pressure. This powerful principle is true, but that doesn't mean that applying it is easy.

I know it can be frustrating, but try to be kind to yourself and your voice. As you can imagine, having an adversarial relationship with your own voice is probably counterproductive. Put together a systematic practice routine so that you're always working on your technique. Your voice will improve with practice, not with punishment. :-)

Is stuttering related to shaking? Can stuttering be controlled with voice training?
@voiceandspeech5 жыл бұрын
In my view, stuttering is more of an articulation issue whereas shaky voice is more of a phonation issue. Since I'm not a speech therapist, I can't speak authoritatively on the topic of stuttering, but I'd assume that anything enhancing relaxation, breathing and a fully engaged sound would probably be helpful at some level.

Congratulations on being valedictorian! Remember that your main job-and only job-is to get your message to the listeners. Focus on that, and you will be effective, regardless of whether your voice is shaking or not. Don't allow yourself to be distracted by the symptoms of nervousness. It's just background noise.

There used to be a saying, "Speak as you sing, and sing as you speak." You might begin to solve the problem by noticing what you do differently when you're singing compared to when you're speaking. I'm not a singing teacher, but I'd bet that it has something to do with how you're using-or not using-your breath.

Because the extended sounds of singing expose any tension or inconsistency in your breath support that might not be so obvious when you're speaking.

Nervousness and stage fright are complex issues, so unfortunately there's no such thing as a simple list of things to practice that will make it better. Since you seem to have a problem only when there are other people in the room, perhaps you might consider joining a local Toastmasters group so you can get experience in front of real people but in a safe and supportive environment. Also remember this will take time to improve, so be patient with yourself.

They certainly will, though it will take some time and practice to get these skills to the point where you can use them under pressure. They can't be just turned on, the day of the presentation. When I have to speak out loud for a while or even when I'm singing in my car, my jaw and throat start to get really sore and my voice starts to tremble. What is that? I don't feel nervous, especially like if I'm singing alone in my car, but I just don't have the strength to talk for more than a few minutes.
@voiceandspeech2 жыл бұрын
Without being able to hear what's going on, it sounds like jaw tension, probably tongue root tension and a lack of breath support. It's all tied together of course. This won't just go away, and could become more pronounced over time, so I recommend doing something about it, sooner rather than later, especially if you're someone who uses your voice frequently.
