Dude you are right on. No need to pay big bucks for 70's vintage. During the 70's they were all in a quality war not quantity. Most all equipment from the 70's was good stuff. It would be great to see you calibrate a unit like this and a good cleaning. Thanks.

I own a 7400 with the KL-888D speakers and love it. It dominates it's space.

Of the "higher powered" mid 1970's receivers, this was a swell one. Kenwoods were noted for fine FM performance and DC (direct-coupled) amps. This 7400 offered; high/low filters that were marginally useful rated at -8dB (100Hz) and -10dB (10kHz), Tone controls: bass/mid/treble are at 100, 800 and 10kHz all +/-10dB's. Though rated for 63wpc it could provide 75wpc into 4 ohms. Both TT hookups are for MM cartridges (sorry no MC), bidirectional dubbing for two tape decks, a mode switch, plus an Aux and Mic input and THD/IM are 0.3%. This receiver just about SCREAMS out for a MAIN IN/PRE OUT so it could be used as a separate pre-amp. Some good vintage speakers to pair with this 7400 might be; EPI-100, 180, 200 or Genesis model 2 or 3, AR 48 or 92, Advent Large Advent or 5002, Ohm L, C2 or H, Infinity Qa, Qb, Bose 501, ADS L-700. Just a few good vintage speakers to consider. This would be a steal at $300.

This was OUR receiver back in the early 1970's. My dad left it to me, and it lasted until 2005.I wept the day it died.

Nice, I just scored one at my local e waste recycler. All the e waste is stored in a shipping container, so no water damage on the unit, it's in remarkable shape and I can tell it did not come from a smokers house, there's barely any dust inside....oh the stuff people toss out.

Awesome the type of stuff you can get over there is mind blowing I’ve seen a decent amount of stuff come out of the garbage / electronics recycling

Now, I love me some vintage Kenwood, but markets are different. $20 is unbelievable and the 7400 is great. I have a 4600, 6600, 9040, 8050, eleven III, and a 7300/7500. All perform well above their weight class.

I found my 7400 at a goodwill store for $28. Cleaned the pots, put in a few lights & bam.The only thing that doesn't function is the power switch. It's always on. I just have it plugged in to a switched surge suppressor.

Hi. Did u know the top of the line Akai aa1050?. I'm about to buy this model of you, or the Akai. Wich one will be better? Thank u
@MikeDoesStuff1
@MikeDoesStuff1 2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the price you're getting the AKAI unit for, but the KR-7400 is a little more powerful at 63 Watts per channel where the AA1050 is 50 Watts per channel. It looks like the AA1050 has a solid reputation so I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Kenwood for 20? Marantz for 900? There is a reason.... Kenwood isnt Marantz. And Marantz is easily worth it. Easily

I've had just about every Japanese receiver brand made. I repaired more Marantz and Sansui equipment than all the rest combined. They all sounded about the same, until I purchased a Mcintosh Mac 4100, now there is a clear and significant sonic difference. Of all the units I've had over the decades I kept a Marantz 2215b as it sounded better than the rest of them, including the famous 2270, a Kenwood kr 8010 and a kr 9600 a Pioneer sx 680 a Technics sa 101 and a 120wpc Yamaha (I don't remember the model number as I gave it to my brother 20 plus years ago) the Mac 4100 isn't the most powerful but it makes all of them sound well something less and similar, not that they're bad, heck I love the little 2215 for my bedside system hooked up to Rodgers ls 3/5's. They all were built well and used the same quality parts except the McIntosh. I guess what I'm saying is just about any old Japanese audio equipment is pretty good stuff and should be about the same price but right now the Marantz name is getting pushed and people who weren't around in the day are just flocking to the name because influncers are getting hits for pumping one thing or another.

@@phonebackup8132 in the 1970s tweeter inc. Had all their amplifiers feeding through a single 2015 preamp stage as they thought it was the best. My friends all bought it for that reason. Not surprised you found out the same thing
