I guess I understand in some way Mitch's point, many people just play solemn without any thinking, but there is some facts to consider: it's a creature, it can attack and block while mana rocks don't, (only one chumblock means life gain or not loss of it), it's colorless, has an ETB trigger AND a dying trigger... there many decks out there that can take advantages of those and even abuse them. So, even thinking about it, I guess that solemn simulacrum still should see a lot play.

Ive always disliked similacrum. Even back in 2009 when i started playing. Card is bunk; slow as fuck small body, and the one csrd you draw off it is often negligible. Just my two cenys on it.

On Solemn Simulacrum - "it ramps you by one, and it costs 4; that is extremely inefficient" -Rampant Growth - 2 mana -2/2 body - 2 mana -Draw a card - 2 mana (generally, outside of blue) It ramps in non-green decks, it can chump block or be sacrificed, it is easy to recur, and it draws a card (or two in Teysa Karlov). Should it be in every deck? No. Is it a fantastic card? Absolutely. Keep in mind, it's in 21% of decks on EDHREC, and many of those aren't green or have recursion or like artifacts, etc. Lots of reasons to run this. If you only look at the ramp, it's inefficient, but if you look at the whole package, it's actually quite efficient.

Honestly. It may sound efficient but it's not. Bear in mind you don't have the option to use any one of the three aspects individually and have to pay full price. Also the key window for ramp will be long past. Not to mention that a vanilla 2/2 is inconsequential in commander. Rarely will it ever save you, and one save in 100 deaths isn't worth a slot. And the draw is never guaranteed. It's a great card for beginners who play 30 turn games that haven't built their own decks yet. But once you're ready to start upgrading your deck it's on the prime cutlist.

The point is to stop snap picking staples and put some thought into it first. Inefficient 'budget' cards that don't mesh with a *focused deck are wasted slots and money in the end. *edited from 'optimized' for accuracy.

@@ericbitson8927 Well, I don't think his card recommendations are changing, but there's a new context that he isn't considering. Providing a budget deck is 1 deck. Saying X cards should not be played, means now he's upgrading/criticizing all decks. It's very similar to feels-bad plays during the game. Doing something cool (like playing something powerful or providing a budget list) is a positive act adding to the experience. Negative acts (like Armageddon or saying "your decks running X are incorrect") however detract from players experiences.

Unless you have a deck that draws a ton of cards, or unless someone is playing jin gitaxius in your group, do you REALLY need Reliquary tower? I'd go one step farther than mitch and say spot removal is KIND OF bad in commander. 1 for 1's in commander often put you way behind if all of your opponents cards are designed to 2-for-1 at minimum.

@@bobby45825 Controversial opinion. Board wipes are overrated. (Other than Cyclonic Rift). Spot removal is 1 for 1 yes, but if an opponent is playing a board wipe you might be getting a free X for 0. Spot removal isn't about efficient trades, it's about timing (i.e. low cmc instant). By waiting until key moments you mess with opponent timings, bait others into dealing with them, and allow you to develop your own game.

Hard disagree on the diamond cycle, especially in 3+ color decks. Even in 2 color decks. If you play them on any turn except turn 2, with no turn 1 ramp, they are worse than commanders sphere and ingot, bc they enter tapped. You play sphere and can immediately tap it, so you net -2 mana that turn, just like the diamonds. But you get the benefits of color fixing and card draw/indestructible.

The cantrips in blue are about getting the right card at the right time. They cost one Mana and provide selection, effectively serving two huge roles of letting your deck be "98 cards", which reduces variance (similar to why fetchlands are so amazing), while also allowing you to keep more hands of 7 without needing to Mulligan, since the selection can often find a land, once again boosting consistency. They are very powerful effects for finding answers where there previously was none. And that's without talking about their benefits in Storm or Topdeck-style gameplay.

So... setting the top of your deck, cantrip or not is super effective. Not to mention brainstorm can effectively turn 2 other cards in your hand into pseudo cantrips too. Say you have 4 cards in your hand, someone plays a big threat and needs to be dealt with now: dig 3 cards down for 1 mana, place 2 you don't need back.

I would get it if it was "stop auto including this in all decks that have blue" but there are tons of different decks out there. In the right decks, someone could brainstorm right before their turn and either combo off, find the right removal for something, or displace something from their hand that won't work until a turn or 2 later for something they can play right then and there.

It's not that hard to hit enough shuffles to make it "combo" into Ancestral Recall. Honestly, I think it's more that card draw spells overall (as opposed to engines) aren't that great. Other than Fact or Fiction, I'm not really excited about any one-time card draw spell.

If it makes you feel better, groups tend to casually become more and more competitive the longer that they are together and the more time they have to experience multiple styles and archetypes of play. Land destruction initially was really bad in my group, so was combo, but eventually we all figured out how to utilize those strategies as well as how to effectively shut them down so that we could interact with powerful decks. Now we have a wide variety of decks with different specialties and most of them are relatively fun to pilot and play against.

Yeah, he misses the entire point of the card. It's a card that nets you 2 cards the vast majority of the time and has a body stapled onto it. Now, is the card outdated? Yes, but that's because card advantage (and ramp for that matter) is handed to you on a silver platter with the arsenal cards out there today, but that's not what he was arguing. He was just arguing that the card is straight up inefficient, which simply isn't true. In a vacuum, the card is very efficient, and that's why it was a staple for so long. It only dropped in favorability due to power creep and decks having natural engines that didn't need a supplement for card advantage.

@@Crunchatize_Me_Senpai Lets say you have three lands and either a diamond or a dingot available as your source of ramp. With the diamond you cast it T2, untap on T3 and have four mana available. With the dingot you play it on T3 and only have the one left over to do something with. It depends on how low to the ground your deck is of course, some decks may not care about 4 drops or need the colour fixing more.

Fact or Fiction vs BS/Ponder/Preordain wasn't my favorite example, 3 generic difference and your opponent can dictate what you keep. I would rather run both but FoF would be on the short list quite fast.

Cantrips are never dead draws. That's technically true. But outside a couple, cantrips, most aren't useful at doing anything and where edh decklists are almost ways very tight, you can't afford to give up significantly better cards. While can trips cycle your deck a bit, they're basically -1 card in your deck, which is not that helpful in edh. And there are better options. Plus, if you're playing casual, you don't need that high consistency and I competative, where you need high consistency, just run tutors and high efficiency draw.

And if you don't draw llanowar elves on turn 1, it's basically a dead draw lol. Mono green draw generally synergizes with big creatures and drawing land. So llanowar doesn't help in most cases. If you're running multicolor with good draw options, then it's a bit more ok, but just run birds of paradise. He's talking more about mono green running mono green dorks in non-dork spam big ramp creature based decks. And those are basically druids which are all dorks. Plus, what you're talking about would be more of a competitive situation where instead, turn 1 sol ring into turn 2 CMC4 ramp 2 forest into rampant growth is better in every way and basically just as likely as turn 1 dork. Plus, outside of 1 artifact that likely is safe, you get much more land. I play Nissa with no Mana dorks and I can ramp like crazy. Don't need 1 Mana dorks to scale fast. Then I just tutor eldrazi and call it a day. I ran llanowar elves for a while, but it never really helped. The few games I got it turn 1, it wasn't significant. Drawing it later, it got forgotten. Just better options imo.

Hell, I play Reliquary Tower in nearly every deck I have because of the simple fact that every blue deck in my group runs Cyclonic Rift, and the worst feeling in the world is being the one guy without a Reliquary Tower... because the overloaded Rift will *always* be cast at the end of *your* turn, and you'll be the one player of four that gets completely sent to Hosetown.

Wasn't this a channel for budget building? I get signets and talismans aren't the most expensive cards ever but command sphere is card people most who enter commander have. It's almost like it's free to them. The reason it is popular is accessibility. I also hate the argument of Solemn. Solemn has it's place in EDH not just because it grabs lands but it's versatility. In Meren it's repeatable free ramp and card draw in one, in white it's one of the few sources of land ramp that can also be flickered. It's why White runs Kor Cartographer. He even mentions the decks that utilize these effects with it. When he suggest Abrupt Decay ($7) over a card printed in most green black precons. Like this whole list comes down to him saying "I know there are decks that could use this but..." Straight up the reliquary tower argument is so dumb, Oh I have 8 cards and need to pitch one... What format are you playing? Most decks with Reliquary tower in them oft draw like 7 cards at a time. I've had well over 30+ cards in my hand I can keep hold of thanks to cards like Reliquary Tower.

Mitch isn’t saying to remove all counterspell a that are less efficient than Counterspell. What he’s saying is that there are so many other counterspells at three mana, many of which are just Cancel + upside, that Cancel should be the last counter you should use in that slot. The exception, like he said, is if you’re playing a deck like Baral or Talrand that’s, like, fifty counters and nothing else.

For every "stop playing this card" you simply suggested a much more expensive version of that card to take its place and it goes against everything you said before when making a budget EDH channel. And yes, i do agree with some things like harmonize, temple of the false god (wich is just trash printed on cardboard) and sometimes darksteel ingot, but for the rest of the cards they're just budget friendly options already, and for those "overrated" cards that you've mentioned, the word that you we're looking for is actually "staple". Also, someone needs to say this: there's no such thing as "social rule", that's just crap that whiny players made up to justify not using recursion for lands and/or other resourses they consider "untouchable". EVERY SINGLE COPY of my EDH decks has 'strip mine', 'ghost quarter' and sometimes 'tectonic edge' to deal with those coffers, urborgs, valakuts and other lands that are actually a pain in the ass. @@robertmayer9772 Dude, when Murder was first printed, it was actually really cool, because until then, Black had pretty much always had the "non-black and/or non-artifact" clause grandfathered in from Alpha's Terror. It was exciting to see a Black kill spell that just straight-up, well, MURDERS something. Though now we have other options like Hero's Downfall, Never//Return, and Ruinous Path that (while some being sorceries) do other cool things, too. But yeah, play what you have. I almost never buy cards for Commander. My collection has been going since 1994, so I have a lot of cards from over the years, but I LOVE the challenge of just making decks from what I already have, even if they are not optimal.

The only thing I really don't buy is not playing Ponder and Preordain. Those cards seem good in most blue decks. Even better when it's in a grave recursion or blink deck as it becomes a extremely repeatable ramp card, where as the majority of most land fetch ramp is green and in instant or sorc so it's harder to recur without dipping into jeskai for flashback style gameplay.

Solemn's not a bad card by any means, but when used as a ramp spell it's incredibly medium. Now, if it has synergies in a deck with say blink effects or a sac outlet, then sure, probably good. If you're spending four mana just to get a land and a meaningless 2/2 dork...you can do better. The card at the end is nice, but again, unless you're getting extra value out of it, you're far better off playing a cheaper ramp/mana rock and using the turns you have 4+ mana to do the focused, fun things you built your deck to do.

This channel has some cool videos, but this video really just highlights how Commander isn't Commander anymore. It used to be that you should run your favorite cards and it was also easy to play on a budget. This video is pretty condescending and isn't for casual players or players on a budget. Commander is still a diverse format even if we all run Solemn and Reliquary Tower.

First, it's land ramp for non-green decks. Second, it draws you a card when it dies so it's great to chump or sacrifice. Third, it's a creature so it's super easy to recur. Does it go in literally every deck? No. But there's plenty of decks that can exploit it for it's full potential.

Decks with Artifact synergies and recursion love the Sad Robot. My Daretti deck makes him super fun because I pull so many Mountains out and draw more gas cards instead of lands. So i agree that Sad Robot is not always sad.

@@FilthyWeeb27 But there are other decks that make great use of fast mana. My Voltron Sigarda deck needs to get her out quickly to ensure a smooth win. Another point is that if you are playing green, by the time a board wipe or something happens to your dork (lets just say turn 4 or 5) you should have also played something like farseek or a signet. His point is valid if your deck has multiple colors, but I think what he said was too broad.

I personally don't like temple of the false god, but I think the trick is to think about it as a ramp spell that costs 4 mana but untaps your lands after casting (like a rewind) rather than a regular land.

Maximum hand size is very important, you have many option to choose from rather than discard cards in your hand. If your using your GY reliquery tower may not fit.. but in some deck it is worth it

Brainstorm is so highly rated because of shuffle effects, making it like Ancestral Recall lite. Brainstorm + fetch = great. The removal spells are budget and meta-dependent. Lots of people run enchantments because a lot of decks don’t run enough enchantment removal. Mortify is OK. Harmonize is good. Concentrate is good. One thing I will say is that there are too many cards that have come to be seen as “auto-includes” when they aren’t. I have had tons of games where Reliquary Tower mattered a lot. Temple of the False God is unplayably awful, 100% agree.

Personally, Reliquary Tower usually isn't worth the deck slot, played a solid 18 games over the last 2 weekends - only discarded cards from excess in two games, where I bounced my own stuff back to hand to avoid a board wipe (discarded lands which I didn't need at that point, no big deal)

The reason green/blue decks will run harmonize (either in addition to or over) some blue draws is because generally in green/blue decks you're generating more green mana than blue due to the use of mana dorks so you are more consistently able to/it would ideally be preferred to cast Harmonize and leave up blue mana for responses.

"inefficient mana rocks" When your deck is built to board wipe every five turns, that indestructibe is rather handy to have. And no, I am not exaggerating. I have a commander deck who mainly wipes the board in one way or another, and is ressurecting creatures when it isn't doing that. EDIT: I NEED Merciless Eviction now. For that deck.
