Another great video. I feel like these videos deliver music theory to synth nerds like a pill wrapped in bacon for a dog, lol. I get to hear cool synth sounds and imagine making great music I actually like with cool instruments instead of a boring old lady at the piano teaching me hop cross buns. Finally! Music theory I can connect with. Thank you.

As someone who started to learm on piano and for piano, and then switched to a more ambient and jazzy\hip-hop oriented style i will say - no 7th, 9th chords, or even sometimes inversions have that distinct intentinality that borring and plain triad have. So please don't abandon them completley just because more fancy chord exists. Obviously you shoundt play only basic tiads all the time on the grig with no inversions, but they not necessarily "boring" they clean, precice and directional, and sometimes we need that clarity, even if we creating ambient or oveproduced sleepy lofi cat gril study beats :)

Just think of each note in the progression as a component of a melody and ask yourself "would I like singing this" Things get far more singable when the notes are not all following each other in lockstep.

I’m all jelly for your Muse. I’m doing a harmony and chord symbol clinic in January. Triadic transformations will be a major focus. I’m using the Tonnetz to teach functional and non-functional triadic relationships. It’s an old idea but it was new to me just a few months ago and I really like the matrix concept it offers. It remains to be seen if it resonates with students. Great video!

I've noticed that when I'm playing a particular archtop guitar it tends to project the midrange more than the low end and top end, and I hear so much more articulation between the chord voicings in songs I learned on a dreadnought. It makes guitar playing more interesting, I've found different ways to chord the old songs I knew, and it's helped me learn to play differently to suit the particular guitar. It makes me wonder what will happen when I finally graduate to a 12-string, what world will that pull me into?

I studied tons of Bach' chorales in the past... they were all fascinating, some of them were so harmonically rich that I couldn't even figure out what was going on at first. And you could take each voice and it always was a wonderful melody, never boring and with its own character.

How do you invert extended chords? If you just take the root or 3 up an octave, doesn't it just crunch with the extended notes? So do you take it 2 octaves up to clear that zone? Or do something else?

When you got your Muse did you consider the Polybrute 12? ( which seems to be the comparative flagship synth released at the same time) And if so, I'm curious what tipped you towards the Muse?
@JamesonNathanJones

Mostly my love of the Matriarch. I had a Polybrute and while I think it's a great synth, I much prefer the sound of the Muse from a pure osc/filter standpoint.

@@JamesonNathanJones My main synth is the Matriarch as well, and I prefer the oscillators and filter too. Yet, it's because I have the Matriarch that I'm leaning towards the Polybrute 12 to try to have the best of both worlds.

Gonna pretend I'm the Rick Rubin of personal marketing for a moment - not remotely qualified - but you are my 2nd fav youtube personality only trailing venus theory. It's a demographic I hadn't realized existed. I got to thinking why. Who else loves youtube music journeys you feel like you can be part of because the creators are real and not pretending like some other well known, yet unnamed music channels. Idk if you guys realize your marketability. It's takes little imagination for me to see either of you doing stand up or acting. The personal passion would be required for success but to me, the aptitude is obvious. Useful and interesting video as always.

I think to many notes on a synth just doesn't sound good. I usually substitute a sus 2 or sus 4 for 9th and 11th chords. Seems to work.

Yes, increasing the quantity of notes does not improve the whole. Three notes are more beautiful if arranged properly.

Very intelligent subscribers if they are introduced to inversions and “non-functional harmony with ninth-chords” in the same lesson and are able to assimilate it in 9 minutes. I would rather check good triad voice leading, the foundation of tonality. This is what helps regarding the difference between boring or interesting. Tetradic jazzy voice-leading requires way more brain espace and ear, although there are some “short-cuts” to use it in a more simplified way . Another thing is the visual clarity of the written example
