This is a good tip, another good way to avoid tearing out grommets to to not have them in the first place, just waterproof a sheet or large piece of canvas and put a rock on one side and tie a loop around the rock from the other side, no puncture in the cloth leaves it stronger.

Make sure that those rocks are nice and rounded! But one problem that I found with this technique, that I used on my tipis, is that moisture tends to collect in the fabric where it is tied around the rocks. This can lead to the fabric rotting from mildew and tearing out. I learned from the experience! Dry those areas well after an extended setup!

Using seam grip or shoe-goo can also add reinforcement on both sides of a grommet you install. It’ll harden the fibers around the hole in the canvas/material.

👍 Excellent tip. Grommets are the most “cost” effective method, not the most effective. Unless they are reinforced as you suggest. But, if one has the sewing machine equipment why not just install a proper tie-out.

Keeping a small bag of marbles with every tarp you keep works the best for "adjustable" tie-buttons. If you don't have marbles, any smooth, small pebble will work almost as well. Do NOT put holes in your tarp!!!

Outstanding workshop video on reinforcing grommets in tarps and such. If needing to hand-stitch the reinforcement material... say through the canvas and leather combo., what gauge sail needle would be appropriate to use? Thanks & Cheers! 🏕🌲

A lot of times the tarp is going to have some synthetic material, if you cut your hole with the cutting die , then carefully melt the ends before you install the grommets, you need to be especially careful not to let it catch on fire and make a bigger mess out of it, plus , don’t tie to the grommets, use a stick as a peg

Since grommetting is so similarly to riveting, I would assume that "washer" is actually called a rove. Which means the term Rover refers to someone who runs around getting their hole riveted.

If installing a grommet at home rather doing a field repair, I bet it might help to let some super glue soak into the cut fibers on the edge of the hole before installing the grommet. Or maybe JB Weld - it wouldn't soak in, but it might hold the fabric together well enough.

The grommet isn't the problem. It's the cheap ass material the grommet is in. My USGI woodland camo ripstop nylon ponchos that I was issued 31 years ago and have been set up as a hooch hundreds of times are still in perfect working order. I have seem sealed it a few times. I have a vietnam era poncho, same size but rubberized. It is nearly 60yrs old and still going strong, just 5 times heavier. I have DIYed an oil skin tarp from a king size 800 tread count sheet. It has 16 grommets in canvas reinforced areas no problems. The big problem I see are the SPACE brand and knock offs that are reusable as a blanket, not a tarp. True I used mine as a tarp a few times in the early 90s but I never put so much strain on it to rip out the grommets. The edges did dry rot and after watching a video, I made it "better". So now it sux cause it has tape everywhere. It cost me $9 at the PX in 1992. I destroyed it with $5 of duct tape in 2021.

Can you do a video on reenforcing or making your common skinny jeans into bushcraft friendly ? Kidda a joke but serious. I see these people with $$$ buy expensive pants that are "Bushcraft Pants" All it is is pants with leather or gortex sewed into the butt and knee area... It might make a different/interesting video than what everyone else is doing. Plus save some $$$

It you really want to craft use some copper tubing and 2 washers to make your own grommets. If you try you can get it super tight with a lot of roll over. Definitely reinforce. If you by a SPACE aka Grabber. Just realize it wasn't meant to be used forever. Mine lasted 29 years until I watch a video that basically destroyed my blanket. I bought a UCO and it was ripped out straight out of the box. Took that piece of stuff back to WM and will never buy UCO anyrhing other than storm matches again.

They do sell spur grommets that have teeth ion the washer side to bit into the material. I've use them in the awning industry for years. They rip a chunk of material out before the rip out. Sailrite sells them for a reasonable price. I think they require a specific setting tool.
