Proper technique, strong grip , racquet & head close together, hit the ball in front. Use of the other hand important . Anything above the net punched , below need may require looser grip more hand feel & touch. This is the correct way & i admit more advanced. Very small racquet movement on backswing but always follow through with more movement to target.

At 5:22 you point out that there is body rotation involved, yet Murray has isolated the pushing of the racket with his shoulder only keeping the body still.

Great advice! Keep the wrist straight, squeeze, use racket absorption, and move body forward... so no need to punch. Thanks! ❤🎾

Great advice. I found it was too hard to make any swing. It is better stay still and let the ball hit on the sweet spot of the racket.

I totally agree with you Ian. It's just teaching first the correct fundamentals and yet simple for the students to understand the idea. The scenario of feeding the ball with almost same speed, height spin and location is very common on some clubs and doing it again and again yet the reality of the game is often and or all the time the opponents hits the with different angles, speed, height, spin etc., this very informative video and it really make sense of the reality of game.

What slice volley does is it stabilizes the racket which is wanted in a volley. Punch has it uses too but only in specific circumstances.
@EssentialTennis

Agree: if you're close, the ball is high and slow, then a punch can absolutely be the best choice.

Good instructional for learning to execute the volley Ian, I use most of the "words and guides" here. I don't get to hung up on some wording if the guidance is clear, I use "pushing" and "carving" as individual words in my instruction (hope you don't mind those;). The best advise you gave is the interactive instruction after the student gets the basics (live ball with instruction), that is where progress takes off!

Punching the volley is pretty good advice for players who swing at volleys as if they were hitting a normal groundstroke. It's a useful cue for those players. Nobody is telling them to punch like Mike Tyson swinging a haymaker to take a guy's head off. The idea is to convey the idea that the volley is a much shorter, more abrupt and controlled stroke than their normal groundstrokes.
@EssentialTennis

100% of people agree: "swinging" at volleys is BAD. I agree, "punching" is better than "swinging"....but does that make it good? No. In my opinion punching is really, really far off base unless you don't have aspirations to be a good net player, but instead just play the game in a minimally viable way. If minimum viable is your goal.... punch away.

There’s the extra spice…! Just having fun. Great video. I have a ball machine and will definitely work these drills. I have heard “punch” many times. Watching myself back on video it is more of a handsy slap that dumps the ball into the net. Thanks ET!

The way I was taught (mind you, 30 years ago and I'm sure that ideas and styles have changed since) punching was intended to get the ball to the desired location at the desired speed. By letting the wrist be more relaxed, do you give up some of that precision / speed?
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 5 ай бұрын
When you relax the hand and wrist there is less speed and more precision.

The best part of this video is pointing out that instructors need to stop the service line soft feed with the player in middle of the box. I don’t think I’ve ever had a volley come at me like that in a match, so why do we practice volleys in that unrealistic way???

There are different types of volleys. The name of one of the volleys is literally the punch volley. There's also a softer angle off-volley. Then there's the drop volley. How lightly or firmly you hold the racket is a factor. Even the punch volley has underspin but it is a real volley. Punch does not mean swing! It means the volley isn't as soft as the other types. Also at 9:35, there is no forward movement after the split step, whoever that is, is waiting for the ball. Contrast that with what Federer does during a real point, he pushes off the back toe into the volley with an aggressive forward attitude even though it is calm. WTF? Move forward for the volley. There's still some good info in the video but he is NOT Yoda.
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 5 ай бұрын
EXACTLY.....there's a million different flavors of volley and yet a lot of instruction provides only the "step and punch" solution, leaving the player completely unequipped for real life. You're absolutely right: sometimes you NEED to be firm and more forceful, which is exactly why the drills I provided include practicing firming the hand and not allowing the racquet to be pushed back as far. Finding a real life point of Federer hitting a volley WITHOUT stepping in would be really, really easy. Stepping in is sometimes necessary, sometimes not, sometimes not at all what's best. If you'd like to see an example let me know and I'd be happy to find one. Cheers.

@@EssentialTennis Yes, I agree Ian. The idea that you always have to step forward for a volley is wrong, even though it is often taught even by those who don't do it! Here for example is Monica Hingis, a world-class volleyer, teaching that you should always step forward on your volleys, and then during her demonstration you can clearly see that she, and the other high-level players, step forward on some of their volleys and not on others! kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4ixaaBvgLFlfLs

😆 Classic....I've seen this kind of "explain" and then "demo" from world class players over and over....where they repeat what everybody says you're SUPPOSED to do and then clearly shows real life is completely different. It's a shame so many people blindly believe the cliche phrases to be accurate.

@@EssentialTennis Its crazy how bad tennis is in this regard. As a technical person who thinks about things in a precise manner, Im always super frustrated with most instruction and videos and what are "mental models" for teaching. People believe these dumb sayings that are really just quips/jingles. Whats hilarious is as you state, the instructor/player will say one thing and then demo it for you, which ofc, has no relation whatsoever with what they said. Infuriating. Tennis could be taught/learned much faster but alas...

For doubles, you won’t have a ton of time to react to volleys so of course you might not have time to step in and punch a volley. For singles, especially coming in behind an approach shot, stepping in and punching a volley is fine. I feel like you’re making this into a thing when it’s not…

If it's the right distance away, the right speed, and the right height then absolutely! What about the other 8 out of 10? That's all I'm trying to say. Real life is much more complicated and requires much more nuance.

We are looking at the same things. Those are the exact same type of video footage other coaches use teaching how to punch through volley. Don't get me wrong. The soft volley is essential to the games but saying punch volloey is wrong is a wrong message. The bottom line is that the players must learn how to guided through the volleys augmented with soft volley. Typically players learns how to guide through the volley first, where punching terms come in play then learn to augment with soft volley that you are teaching. If a player knows the soft volley only, the opponents will find out very quickly and murder you on the court.@@EssentialTennis
