Am I employing a false sense of urgency with this topic? Perhaps.
But if you care about enjoying fragrances you smell for the first time, I think this video will be useful.
It is so easy to ruin your first impressions of a fragrance by smelling them a certain way, even though that way feels like the most natural thing to do.
I'm here to tell you to think twice before you sniff that new fragrance!
Links to the 10 fragrances mentioned are below!

Justin, true to your word, you deliver! For those chronic wrist sniffers out there (myself included), I challenge them to NOT even spray their wrists. Keep the sprays to their neck and body for a different wearing experience. If I want a greater waft of the scent, I lift up the collar of my shirt to smell what's coming from my body. Ahhh! This keeps me from over analyzing the fragrance and I get a better understanding of what others are smelling around me. As always, awesome content! I always learn something from your videos.

I agree and I stopped spraying my wrist during my full wearings a few years ago. I like to spray close to get the best olfactory experience. Neck and chest are my main areas of contact. I'll occasionally hit my "elbow pit" but that's just me being greedy lol.

100% I still spray my wrist, but behind my ears and the back of my neck are my favorite spots to spray. That way when I turn my head I can experience it how someone close to me would.

Yes! Finally someone with your reach talks about this! I couldn’t agree more, I see so many people, even experienced KZbinrs, spraying a fragrance on skin and whacking it right up against their nose, inhaling like it’s a nasal decongestant. That isn’t how you’ll be smelling the fragrance on yourself 90% of the time, and isn’t how most people will usually smell it on you either, so whilst it can help you really dig deep into the notes, it gives a wrong impression of the actual wearing experience. One close up sniff of the opening of Davidoff Zino will teach you this lesson in a way you will never forget. 😂

Also nose fatigue. People can not experience fragrance. Then they complain about performance. Spray wrists/top of hands back of neck and or chest. Do not smell fragrance up close just smell the whiffs let it come to you and experience scents that way. Less sprays is more.

So coincidental that this video came out today, because I was literally just talking about this exact topic with Greta today! I find that most ouds are not meant to be huffed close up, and generally smell really nice in the air/trail. I find there are certain scents that I do want to bury my nose in, generally more vanillic/gourmand/warm and cozy ones. Thank you for bringing attention to this really important aspect of fragrance! 👏👏👏

I agree with the argument you are making. But I actually love the opening of Gucci Guilty Absolute! I smelled it in a shop last week. It was the 2017 first batch (supposedly already 2 years out of date 😂 ) and I bought it right then and there. No waiting for drydown, no nothing...loved it immediately and I have nothing similar in my collection.

I recall years ago getting Dylan Blue in a decant. (From the dearly departed MyMickers RIP and LOVE) Wore it and was meh. Very pungent to me but got two immediate compliments at work. Fast forward I figured it was a loss so one day I sprayed my son before we went shopping. I couldn't get over how nice he smelled. I kept smelling him over and over. It was the first time I truly realized how fragrances smell "in the air" vs the wearer and how masterful the art of perfumery really is to achieve such a result. I have the same feeling towards Original Santal. I can't really stand the cinnamon note in general. But if hit a test strip, I will smell it over and over again. It is marvelous. It is actually kind of annoying because I want to smell it that way but wearing it changes it for me 🤣

Gucci Guilty Absolute smells EXACTLY...like band aids. You can't convince me otherwise. When I first read that comment on YT, and then actually smelled it on skin, that's easily the most accurate description I've heard of any frag. Ever. That said, if you're someone that loves the smell of band aids, well...I guess that's your signature scent.

Also, I agree. You can’t really leave your judgement to how it smells on skin because it could smell so much better in the air. I believe many perfumers design their fragrances with the intent of it being experienced in the air. I know Layton smells 100x better in the air than on skin even though it’s still very good on the skin.

Super lesson and valuable advice. I like using my hands and wrists sometimes my inner elbow then I walk away. I’ll give it 5 minutes, half an hour and then check throughout the day. I only spray once from about a foot away. If I can get samples, I do but you need a great relationship with the SA.

I learned this the hard way, but I learned early on... gotta let it sit on the skin and go back to it... I do that with every fragrance I buy now. Creed Royal Oud - I always liked it... I sampled it first, same system as up above... just awesome. Very elegant scent. Overture - I've gotten my nose on it but haven't splurged for a bottle yet... not sure if I'll get it now... maybe next year... have a few others in front of it. Gucci Guilty Absolute - used to have a half bottle I swapped with a friend... very good, def cant smell this right on your hand... has to breathe for a bit. I could see this really turning people off if they use the up close hand method lol This is a very masculine fall/winter scent - always have it on that mental list for guys asking for masculine fall/winter scents with no sweetness but not super fresh

Great video and refreshing way to go about making a list! A lot of these I've yet to get my nose on but look forward to as some of the others like Overture Man and Cartier Declaration EDP are two I've gotten off your recommendation and have fallen in love with. I agree I had a similar experience with Overture when I first put it on and sniffed it up close. Came off really dry and spicy and lacked any sweetness. And while it is not a very sweet fragrance, catching off the wafts the boozy aspects come out a lot more pronounced and inviting. Also a lot of the time smelling up close can exacerbate early anosmia and give a false impression of poor longevity and projection. God bless and thank you again Justin!

I had a girlfriend and she told me she loved the way I smelled especially my jacket. I had my football letterman jacket that I wore constantly. I had a wood stove in my house that we constantly burned during the winter. I also chewed Skoal Long Cut. She said my jacket smelled like a combination of cologne, a wood fire, and mint. Eat your heart out Maison Margiela😂 . I thought it was strange at the time but whatever kept her sitting on my lap with her face either buried in mine or my jacket I was happy with it.

Im going to say department stores and sales associates are to blame for this. It's definitely true that fragrances do smell better in the air. People have become accustomed to spraying fragrances on tester strips which encourages you to smell them up close. This is why we sniff our first point of contact up close. Hopefully people will one day learn it's best to give a scent a full wearing before judgement.

That is very good point Justin. I also dismissed quite a few fragrances based on a first impression of off a test strip without even wearing it! Sometimes some fragrance sticks in my mind and I come back to it after few months. For example this was the case with Costume National Soul, John Varvatos Dark Rebel and Amouage Beach Hut Man, which I now absolutely love! Also testing winter fragrances during summer and vice versa is not a good idea :) Have you tried 1740 by Histoires de Parfums? That one would definitelly fit into this category as well. One of those where it takes some time to appreciate. Btw. Under My Skin from Francesca Bianchi was the best one for me so far. Funilly I found Etruscan Water on the opposite side of the spectrum but again doing the same mistake, not wearing it on my skin yet. Received the samples recently so I will definitelly give it a wear or two.

@@AB-bw5yc we definitely have a particular taste. But we are not superior-there is no right and wrong when it comes to what people like or don’t like.

@@stayfreshproductions to me being a real frag-head means you've moved passed the "i just want compliments" stage and you're now enjoying the art of it. Superiority doesn't factor in.

Hey brother...it's been a while! Love the video...excellent advice! Let the fragrance come to you! That way, you give all fragrance, the fresh stuff, sweet stuff, and the more challenging stuff a chance to be experienced. I was nodding my head with almost everything you said. You might be a cult leader, with videos like this, LOL! 🤜🤛💯

Put Gucci Guilty Absolute on for the first time in a long while last night...and it's even better than I remembered. I think of it as the Laphroiag of fragrances. Not that it smells like a peaty Scotch exactly. But both have a medicinal, bandaid-adjacent thing going on. Both are very divisive. And I love both of them. However, I'm not sure I have the nerve to wear GGA around anyone else.

Ooh I really liked l'heure Verte. I ordered a set of samples from Kilian and that was maybe my second fave (next to black phantom). Agree about the spraying. I tend to spray fragrance more on my clothes than directly on me, so I wouldn't test it directly on my wrist.

This for me is almost top ten list!!! Agree, these fragrances are to smell them in the air, I used Overture extensively this summer at over 100° F and I'm not telling that I've got a lot of compliments but 2 or 3 people ask me what I was wearing, so yes there's a big difference between how it smells directly and the sillage that you're leaving. Congratulations on your new fragrance!!! Thanks for the video JC!!!

This is solid advice! I've made this mistake of smelling a fragrance too close and got the wrong impression of it. It was Guerlain's L'Homme Ideal EDP, I tested it on my wrist maybe two times last winter and I liked many aspects of it, but somehow it felt too leathery and sharp. This autumn I tested it again and I still felt that it might be too much for me, but decided to buy a bottle anyway. After wearing it, it was much softer and the leather does stay more in the background. Now I'm in love with it :D I certainly learned my lesson!

Would you recommend a tester strip instead, for people trying them in retail?

I would strongly recommend wearing it for an hour or two (MINIMUM) before you bought anything... Just my two scents..😂

I don’t recommend paper at all. Your skin is not paper, so while it gives you an idea, it will not be an accurate experience. Try it on skin if you can if you’re considering a purchase.

Skin is always better, but sometimes you run out of skin and tester strips are needed for first impressions at least (but not enough to actually make a purchase decision - always try on skin before buying). Also, sometimes spraying your skin with 5 strong fragrances at once can be a bit overpowering, so tester strips can be handy then too as a first test. 😂 I think if you’re spraying on tester strips, it’s better to sort of fan yourself with the strip and “waft” it towards yourself, as this is going to give the best impression of how it will smell in the air around you when you properly wear it. Sure it makes you look kinda “extra”, but I think it is the most accurate way of testing the fragrance sillage.
