Follow the manufacturers recommendations for plumbers' putty or silicone. With that said basket strainers I've never seen one recommend silicone, but bathroom sink pop-up drains some recommend silicone and explicitly say do not use plumbers' putty.

my kitchen sink has the wall drain a bit too high with garbage disposal best i can get is about level over to wall I guess when they built house in 1950 they didn't figure on garbage disposals don't want to rip whole kitchen apart to lower it.

Yeah I have seen that a lot and it some times take major work to correct it. Level is better than back pitched.

I'm somewhat of a DIYer, and all the videos I've watched would put plumbers putty there. Otherwise, I have no idea. 😂 I'm curious about what the other problem was that you observed.

The whole drain assembly is sloped the wrong way they just built it all a bit too high and I bet that have a back up in the near future.
