When I originally got in to car audio installation in the mid 90's, there were a series of tapes (yep...VCR. be kind & rewind lol!) that were basically instruction classes. The first of their kinds. Your videos remind me of those sir. Which is a really good thing! They are perfect and pertain to 3D finishing in general....not just helmets and masks. Thank you!

I've always learned to make the first layer the same as the base color, as it is that very layer of paint that will seep through. Alternativelty, a clear layer of paint.. Love your stuff, very instructional and clear. Just a little hard to find some of the products you use in Sweden ;)
@TheLastLayer1113 ай бұрын
You don't need to use the exact products I use. From my experience most body shop products are pretty close in performance. Most 2K high build primer should work just fine. also, 2K clear, I use the Akzo Noble because that what I have always used. There are better clears, but price really comes in to play. There are some less expensive products available also.

Love your videos. Pretty much EVERYTHING in the prop/modeling universe benefits from auto finishing products and techniques. Best TOS Captains Chair I've ever seen was finished at an auto body shop. Tough and durable finishes guaranteed. And with 3D prints, well, any visible layer lines, IMO, equals total failure no matter the rest of the work. Currently building an ABS printed Robby the Robot and your finishing videos will insure he will look better than he ever did on screen!

Both 3M and Custom Shop have tapes in both sizes. Is there a reason that you chose one brand over the other for the particular sizes, or was it just which product you became familiar with first?
@TheLastLayer1114 ай бұрын
Both work real good. I first used The 3M and I really like it. Sometimes its hard to get (sold out).

What i wanna know is why the paint gets marked by the tape when you peel it off?
@TheLastLayer1114 ай бұрын
if you are referring to some of the small marks where the black meets the red, that's not from the tape, its from cutting with the razor, I wasn't being overly cautious. If you wanted to completely eliminate that you could put an intercoat of clear on before the black, but that's a whole other video. As you can see at the end, if you dab some color on the scratches before you paint, you will never notice them.

13:33 So you peel the tape when the paint is dry to the touch?
@TheLastLayer1114 ай бұрын
yes, the timing isn't critical, but if you wait too long, like a couple days or something, sometimes the paint dries so hard, that it wont release from the edges cleanly.

How do avoid the paint pulling off the paint underneath when removing the masking tape
@TheLastLayer1113 ай бұрын
I always try to use and easy release masking tape, such as delicate surface Frog tape. Also, I don't sand the primer with anything finer than 400 grit sandpaper. This will give the paint something to "grip" to.

@@TheLastLayer111 thanks for your reply very appreciated, I my filler to around 420, and I’m using yellow and green frog tape I give the paint over night to cure but still happens and any tape on the chrome just leaves marks
@TheLastLayer1113 ай бұрын
Chrome is tough to tape over. I rarely use the chrome/gold plating type paints because they are hard to tape over and you cannot clear over them. They have a tendency to flatten out with clear
