@@Katimorton I know you are probably much more equipped in psychology than I am, but I have been studying people and their responses to outside stimuli with psychology...could it be that we are having a hard time more now because our brains cant differentiate between working and being at home since it is now in the same place. in other words: before, we could go home from our office and our mind could separate the two because our bodies and brain stimuli changed...but now, we are just jumping from home to work back to home without any emotional\physical changes for our brains to respond to? I would really like your thoughts... I like working from home during this time...but I am haivng trouble sleeping, and my office is in my bedroom...

Doesnt help with me. Cause if I focus on my breathing I get even more aware of the fact that i'm not breathing correctly so i'm not in control, each makes me panicking even more. I can't focus in my body sensations I need to focus on outside factors so I can get distracted.

Yes me too, I am studying and it is not useful. Days are blending together and everything I do gets mixed up in my memory when I look back. I believe this comes from the fact we are always pretty much in the same room and not doing anything different so our brain keeps this just as a hole memory rather than separated ones. Idk if it makes sense to you but I tried my best to describe it.

I would love a video on how to cope as someone who can’t stay home due to type of work they are in? I work in a shop that was deemed essential and I find it super triggering being there, what with feeling the energy of anxiety and fear of customers whole day at work and having customers ignore the social distancing requests and coming too close. Also stocking items that could have virus on them all they long because multiple people touched it. I come home exhausted every day and sleep very poorly.

Kati you're just the best. Thank you thank you THANK YOU for this video. We are currently in our 3rd week of lockdown in France and while I thought I was doing okay, keeping myself distracted and busy at home, I did a panic attack today just after getting up. I think this crisis is going to affect us all in many ways in the short and longer term, and mental health is going to be, more than ever, a priority. Good luck to everyone, wherever you are, whatever you're dealing with right now. You are not alone. We are all in this together ♡

The same as all of the other commenters already, I clicked this video as fast as I could when the notification popped up. Battling a severe sinus infection and not being able to function led to a week long (so far) cervicogenic headache that I made worse by going into full on panic mode. My body was fighting this intense panic attack because I was in so much pain but it forced its way out. I've struggled with my mental health since I was a kid and I haven't had an episode like this in years because I normally manage well. But WOW. I just laid there shaking and crying uncontrollably and finally realized that I am absolutely terrified of everything going on around me right now. And not being able to help my husband or take care of our kids left me fearing the worst and obsessing over what would happen if I didn't get well again or if I was just gone. I NEEDED this video. Thanks Kati!

Mrs.Nutty 💗I'm sorry you are having such a difficult time. I find that listening to relaxing music on KZbin and focusing on my breathing really helps. A lot of the relaxing music videos have scenes of nature that I find very calming. I hope this helps. Also, if you can get out in nature to go for a walk, it is scientifically proven that being in nature can improve mental health. I don't know if you have heard the term "nature deficit disorder." It's not an actual disorder in the DSM, but there is enough research out now about how those of us living in cities who don't get out into nature have more mental health issues. Of course, getting out into nature won't cure bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, but it can help manage symptoms alongside medication and therapy.

Thank so so much for this, Katie. I work at a homeless shelter and lately, between wearing a face mask that makes it difficult to breathe and the nearly unbearable level of anxiety surrounding me, both among staff and guests, I have been so overwhelmed that it feels like a constant, relentless anxiety attack. I even think I may be experiencing a heart attack sometimes. I constantly remind myself to try to breathe normally, move my body in ways that helps me relax (neck stretches, shoulder and back stretches, etc). The "shake it off" from Levine's research is such a profoundly helpful reminder-why we have come so far removed from our natural tendencies for self regulation is unfortunate to say the least. Also checking in with my feelings, allowing myself to grieve (I feel that I'm almost constantly grieving the experience of shelter guests, and I realize that this borders on vicarious trauma), and distracting myself (when possible) helps. I find my mind naturally doing this with an "ear worm" of Alicia Keys songs (her latest album is amazing). I am trying my best to keep working and to serve my community in this time of crisis. It seems so unfair that so many people of privilege seem so oblivious to the suffering of others at this time, and it makes makes me so goddamn angry. I think anger is the main emotion that keeps me going lately. Fight and freeze are the habitual go-to's for my body and mind, but I think I need to focus on the anger that seems to be motivating my fight response lately. I want to use it productively but not allow it to come out in a destructive or harmful way. My fear is that it will manifest as anger directed at shelter guests, and I even snapped at the security guy yesterday for sitting in a chair looking at his phone all the time when he should be doing is goddamn job to keep us all safe. Jesus blood Christ on a stick, this is such a stressful time. Thanks so much for the reminders to shake it off, check in, feel the feelings and distract.

I am in the good position to be able to go outside without exposing myself to others. And the thought that soothes me a lot: we are all in this together. It is not limited to me, my town or even my country. And we can reach out to each other across the globe, share tips, funny memes about Covid-19 and just be here for each other. The important thing is to stay safe, stay sane in all this insanity and hold on to our friends through this.

I struggle to not do anything to myself. I don't find help. I am losing faith and hopes completely. I have 2-3 friends I can talk to, but my family is not supportive and no matter how hard I try to make them understand, they won't. So, I don't really know what to do. I've started having panic attacks and not been sleeping well for about a week now so perfect timing. I'm okay with staying home because it's necessary, but so angry at people who aren't following directions and making things worse for everyone else, and I'm anxious about how long the home quarantine will have to last.

Most of the time people tend to apply what they are taught only when they are already in the middle of a crisis. Instead, we believe in consistently practicing meditation and other tools like journaling, dopamine detox sessions and gratitude (there's so much science behind what gratitude does to our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health). Incorporate better habits gradually. Taking 15 minutes to focus on your breathing when you wake up is definitely attainable, same with taking a break from our screens (phones, computers, tv's, etc.), or writing down your feelings and the things we normally take for granted.

Thank you, Kati! Great video and great timing, as always. Shaking it off is also a technique used in chi gung to “dispel excess chi.” That nervous energy is envisioned as chi in this system of practice. There are other techniques like clapping your hands and making big arm circles that also dispel chi. I like it. I haven’t done chi gung (or qigong is another spelling) in forever. Maybe I’ll look up some videos. I’m forwarding this video. It’s amazing, as always.

Katie!!!! I have been one of the ones to literally make people happy in these times. I am social distancing and yes. Work has canceled. I am a musician and yes we are hurting as musicians not beeing able to go to work but Iam not letting that spot the joy from coming. I look at every day as an adventure, and I actually have time to connect via text. I am sharing music from Michael Bible on youtube to other as well. I could bee so pissed off about not working, but is that going to do any good??? No!!! I actually have told people what my secrets is during these times and it is not easy, but i am sharing with you how I cope.... yes. I do sleep great at night knowing that i am going to wake up breathing tomorrow. I have things to look forward to and life is actually different due to the fact I am not busy as I was. I am actually beeing told by this social distancing to maybe stop and slow down my busy self and take time to refelect which I am doing. Yes. I love keeping busy and going out but during these times, I am actually making life super happy the way that it is. Keep on sharing and doing what you are doing. I texted a friend the other day and he told me that i was an inspiration for dealing with the social distancing and a person that should bee a movititional speaker. I am a musician hahahaha!!! And I am glad and count my many blessings to have the life and love of my work that i do.

I don't mean to sound like the oddball here, but I really will no matter what. SO... I'm LOVING the social distancing, for example, I don't have people shoving their shopping carts up my butt, pushing me out of the way, or getting in my personal "bubble" any more while waiting in line (queuing is NOT something people do in America very well at all!), it's a huge sigh of relief for me! I also have had more free time at home because my appointments are online or held off until a later date, and that gives me time to process things mentally and get my apartment cleaned up. I still have boxes of my mom's stuff from when she died 5 years ago that I haven't gone through, and I love having the time to enjoy what she left for me. I also like the quiet streets so I can go for my walks while being able to avoid people without getting dirty looks. I have always been quite a bit of a loner, and odd as it is for other people, to me, this is a vacation from the roaring rapids of daily life that was running me over. The only issue I have that would be negative is sometimes I can't find my favorite pizza at the store cuz it's sold out lol! I don't know if this was something good to post or not, but I wanted to share my experience that there are some of us out there who LIKE our personal space, our peace, our valuable time at home to clean, and time with my cat! (Don't get me wrong, I'm not a total recluse, I still say hello to people I walk by, and check up on my friends with texts and phone calls!) 🥰✌

There should be number 8 (very important): don’t follow all the news about the virus... I personally hardly ever check the current info cause this kind of stuff makes me anxious. If I need to know something, I find that the information comes to me anyway (through a friend or a family member etc) What I do need to know is what measures I have to take to stay safe so I know what to do. In short, guys, realise what is, and what isn’t in your control, and do what you can do to keep yourself and others safe. Let the politicians, healthcare professionals etc do their job, and you do yours. Take care 🙂 Kati, I love your videos!

Well, then I have some wierd mind functioning because this is the most relaxed I've felt in years. Finally I got to do everything I wanted to but haven't had time for. Everything stopped so I don't have fear of missing out while doing my things. I have been more stressed by everyday life than by pandemic. I don't know why that is but that's how I feel.

hey katie I hope you see this!! I’ve been watching your videos for years. You have helped me tremendously and even helped me realize I had bpd and I was able to get diagnosed and start the best therapy plan for me!! As I said I have bpd and I’ve been struggling due to this time and having to stay home. I’ve been away from my boyfriend and my fear of abandonment has been so bad lol. What’s the best way to deal with this? I miss him so much and it really hard for me to be away from him and regulate my emotions. Please reply if you can. Thank you so much for your videos. Somatic Experiencing was really good for me. It's great that you tell people about SE exercises (even if you're not an SEP). I'd like to add that it is important to move slowly (!) and not quickly shake and move. I wish I didn't have to stop SE so quickly. My SE practicioner came back from holidays last summer and told me she was going to move in a few weeks. I'm still struggling with her being gone and for several reasons I couldn't try someone else yet. With Corona and being in the risk group it won't happen any time soon either :( Especially in these times I could really use the support. Anyway, thanks for your advice :)
