These are the steps that I take to stay TICK FREE when I'm out in the forest or on the trail. An added benefit is that it also works against mosquitos, nats, and other bugs.
This process works on Skin, Clothing and Gear!
...
Two aspects, repellant for the skin and an insecticide for clothing and gear.
Starting with the insecticide, I use Permethrin;
Permethrin is a pesticide that you spray on clothing to kill black flies, ticks, and mosquitoes but has no harmful side effects on humans if used properly. It is the active ingredient used in Insect Shield and Buzz Off clothing and kills bugs when they land on your clothing. You can buy Permethrin Spray in liquid form and spray it on your own clothes; you can also purchase this in large amounts and dilute but for simplicity.
Supposedly permethrin is nontoxic once it dries for humans; is this true, I have no idea. What I can tell you is that it works.
As an interesting fact, Permethrin was developed by the U.S. military to protect soldiers from insects in the jungle and also, the military was the first to feature military tent bodies which were treated with permethrin to repel bugs. This is something that is becoming more and more common now with the civilian market.
With permethrin, I’ll treat all clothing;
Shirt, pants, socks, shoes
If you wear a hat, treat the outside
Allow to sir dry
Do not treat skin
When applied to clothing, it lasts for 4-6 cold water washings.
Virtually Odorless and colorless.
With such a product, think of it as putting a layer of protection on your clothes;
I don't put it on so heavy that it soaks through the materials - just enough to damp them. Around the cuffs where ticks can get in, I will treat those areas liberally.
Some people will literally soak their clothing and gear in permethrin but have never felt that this was necessary.
Permethrin Last for weeks and multiple washings. If I'm going out into areas which I believe will be tick heavy, I will go ahead and reapply
As soon as I get in from a trip I will shower and will wash my clothing..
.....
Let’s talk about ticks and how they work for a second ;
Ticks can't jump as they are crawling insects that latch on to their victims as you pass by whatever they are on. Grass, bushes, weeds, etc.
This could be your pants, latch on to your shirt, or even your shoes. With your shoes, this is why you treat your socks; once in your shoes where do they go?
Up, looking for skin.
If you don't treat your socks, it is possible to be in the situation where the treatment has worn to the point where they don't die but they don't want to be on those materials and if your socks aren't treat they will move from your shoes to your socks and then up your leg.
For the same reason, it is important to treat your skin and for this I used Off and it works well for me.
I've tried using all natural products and I have yet to see a single one that really works
Treating Gear :
Here's a pro tip for you all; you can treat some of your gear with permethrin and this is a really good idea as it prevent ticks from latching on she you out your pack down on the ground or when walking passed them in the forest, field, etc.
I would highly recommend doing a sample area first to ensure that it doesn't discolor the fabric or cause other issues.
As long as you don't have issues with discoloring, you can treat your pack and even the body of your tent. I wouldn't treat the fly of your tent as it may interfere with one of it's coatings.
Permethrin can be found with numerous application types including sprays, airesols and even lotions. I haven't tried the lotions myself as my method works well for me.
Can be purchased premix or in large amounts which you will have to dilute. I prefer premixed for ease of use.
Cost : 24oz Spray bottle is around $16 - 18oz aerosol is around $15. I would go with the spray as the Nossle tends to be more reliable that the aerosol variant. Also you get more for less.
Makers : Sawyer brand is the most popular and common and is all that I have personally used. If it works, why change right? Repel has a version, Ben’s has one too and there are other companies.
Directions - Read Bottle.
Note:
This is the method which I personally use to lessen the odds of issues with ticks and it had worked well for me across the country with my travels.
For anyone who is going to give this options a try, I would suggest treating an article of clothing and going out for a quick hike to ensure that you don't have any sort of personal allergies or reaction to this product. I have never heard of anyone having issues but it's the smart thing to do.

I pretty much treat my clothes the same way but buy the concentrate at a farmer's supply ( they sell it to use in horse stalls) and mix in a pump sprayer. We use a camper, boondock half the time, I spray the campsite down right after parking the camper. This helps control the ants and spiders also. This also works well around the foundation of the house. Once in a pinch, I sprayed a wasp nest. Didn't kill the wasps instant but they flew around blind and straight to the ground and died a few minutes later.

Be careful with Permethrin around Cats. Their liver cant metabolize the essential oil and it will give them insane muscle spasms and seizures and it can kill them. Just something to be aware of. Went through this when the cat slept with the dog in his bed and some of the Permethrin treatment got on him. May not be an issue once its dry But I would definitely take care durring the application process to keep your felines safe and away from the area!

I didnt see in the comments if this was mentioned yet, but there are two different types of permethrin sold in stores... One with a petroleum based surfactant and the other is water based. The petroleum based does have a smell to it, so all you hunters will want to use the water based permethrin... which is intended for clothing.

Luke, you mentioned the valve stem can get mucked up. I suggest you do the same with this as I do for pressurized paint cans. When you are done spraying, turn the can upside down and depress the valve until all the insecticide is out of the stream and you only get and hear the propellant. This should take care of the problem.

Luke, you got that spray all over your left hand!! 1. wear rubber gloves when spraying permethrin! Sealed eye goggles, and a painters respirator mask (like a sealed gas mask), too. 2. Wash up afterwards with grease cutting dish soap! 3. Keep Deet far from your car - it blisters your paint!! Yup, I use them all the time, too. 4. Colloidal silver is the best preventative for Lyme. I take 2 tbsp 2X a day, every day, and when I get a 'hot' bite, I also use the gel on the bite. I get tested for Lyme every blood test, clean. Yes, I have had several 'hot' bites. I always look forward to your videos. I tell people that I'm not afraid of bears but I am obsessive about ticks. I also treat my clothes and skin separately. I use permethrin on my clothes and equipment, spraying around the openings of my tent and sleeping bag. But for the past two years I exclusively use picaridin on my skin. Its as effective as Deet but doesn't have the noxious smell, doesn't leave an oily residue on your skin, and most important, it doesn't damage your equipment.

Very good suggestions. I got two tick bites in 2015 on spring hikes. Both were embedded pretty good. Ended up going to the doctor because the bites started to look really bad, and was put on antibiotics both times. Tested negative for lime disease, but since then I treat everything with permethrin, including the outside of my sleeping bag and my tyvek ground sheet (I sleep under a tarp). My body gets sprayed with picaridin.
@KamilM-j8l
@KamilM-j8l Жыл бұрын
When do you treat tyvek ground sheet with permethrin? Just before goind to sleep on it or in home before hiking? I was thinking about the same but I was afraid that tyvek will not absorb permethrin because this is basically some kind of plastic and permethrin will simply flow over it. Second idea that I have is using agrotextile instead of tyvek. Agrotextile is some kind of textile so it should absord permethrin probably...

I got Lyme disease in Nov 2018 deer hunting. Snow on the ground. As long as temp is above freezing ticks can be active. Did not know that. Permethrin is now my tick killer of choice and you can buy clothes already treated with it. Picaridin is the best repellent for ticks according to the Tick Encounter Resource Center of U of Rhode Island and other research and info area I was able to find including my infectious disease doctor that treated me. Not deet! Deet is not as effective against ticks as Picaridin (repellent) and Permethrin (Killer). As a very interested bystander I thought I would add my two cents worth.

Very good info as always Luke! My experiences are a little different with permethrin i guess. I dont use it too much anymore. I went up to pharoah lake ADK's recently and started off with sawyers permethrin spray and within a half hour the bugs were laying into me. I finally got fed up and went with the sawyer 99% deet and never got touched by a bug the rest of the trip!! I know deet isn't the safest route but it works!! My uncle was also telling me in the military they got alot of warnings about pemethrin even though it was sometimes used. He was a medic bronze star in desert storm and warned me about using it. He retired in 94' so thats not to say they haven't made some better changes with it since. I thoroughly check myself up and down regardless of what im using. I get home from the woods and leave that clothing outside and hop right in the shower! Highly recommend that technique aswell!! Always check your crotch area of your pants too i know that sounds funny but they hide there for the warmth and fit in between the stitching sometimes. Lymes is bad where i live! Use what works for you too of course! Stay safe guys!! Hike on!!

Thanks, Luke, for the awesome advice and demonstration. I do this about every quarter and just before I depart from my vehicle for a hike I spread a small amount of Picaridin Lotion (also by Sawyer) around my neck, forearms, my ankles just above my shoe or sock line (often go sockless) and just above my waistline from the small of my back to my hips. I found a couple of ticks that latched onto the hem of my tee shirt in back; even though I had treated my tee with Permethrin a week or so before. On overland camping trips I started hanging a "zapper" from the up raised hatch of my SUV and that has helped to keep the mosquitoes and flies down but it's not 100-proof. Unfortunately I've been forced out of a couple of campsites on fishing trips and moved to other areas where the wind was more prevailing.

Lyme disease, as well as other tick borne illnesses, are everywhere now. And despite what some may say, it can be a terrible chronic illness. That's why it's important to wear the proper clothing ( long sleeve shirt tucked in to pants tucked into socks) and have the clothing treated with permethrin (the only thing that actually works at killing ticks). After being out you should take a shower and then check for ticks using a mirror for checking your back. Please stay safe everyone.

Inexpensive permethrin can be purchased at "tractor supply" as equine pest spray as a 10% solution. You can get them online for 20$ per quart. This can be diluted to 20:1 in a good spray bottle for pennies on the dollar vs the cost of sawyer spray. They are all basically the same. Some form of petroleum distillate to dissolve the water insoluble permethrin. Once sprayed, the petroleum and water evaporate, leaving a very fine "powder" that water can't dissolve. I use it liberally on all my gear and field cloths. It's amazing. Just remember, using a stronger solution for cloths is pretty safe, IMHO. If you plan to spray animals, follow the directions and DON"T EXPOSE cats. It's toxic to felines.

All good advice Luke. Thanks. I have used the Ben's 100% Deet for over 20 years and it's the only product that works well in my area. As to ticks jumping, I cannot ever say that I have seen a tick jump ON me or my dogs, but I can absolutely say that I have seen many, many jump OFF me and my dogs when they are pursued. They don't fall off and they don't run off. The spring off like a flea which makes them hard to capture and kill. If we discover an unembedded tick when we come in the house we have to be particularly careful in trying to pick it off. You can pick one off and pinch it in your fingertips, but if you open your fingers to see if you have it - BANG! - they're off like a shot. Now you have a live, hunting tick in your house.

I use permethrin to treat: Tops of socks, Bottom halves of pant legs and shirt sleeves on the inside Inside shirt tails and collars Around zipper flys on pants Insides of hats Inside of sleeping bag, outside of pillow On tent - Screen doors on outside, inside corners, along top of screened enclosure Underwear insides I wear long pants, and tuck them into my sock tops. Wearing shorts seems not good. We returned from a week long canoe trip, moving every day. One of the camps and one lunch stop over spot is also used by horse riders. There seemed to be more ticks at these spots. Ticks have been a problem in Michigan the last 8-10 years. Before that, they weren’t here. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

If I'm going to land in a site I'm going to stay in for several days, I will string up a line and treat my clothes with Permethrin there. It seems to have a corollary effect in keeping that site clearer of bugs, no matter what I'm wearing.

benefits of being a pest control guy, I use permethrin concentrate so I dont mind the mixing to save money. The permethrin, paired up with a natural spray I make with essential oils keeps me bug free even in the height of tick season. Any ticks I do get on me end up regretting it and desperately try to get off of me. Add in the fact that I consume so much garlic that I think most bugs find me undesirable anyhow

Great vid. Here on Long Island in NY, we have a big tick problem. I use permethrin on all my gear and clothing and use a homemade mix of 1 part Dr. Bronner Peppermint Soap to 3 parts water in a spray bottle on my skin and I find it works as well as Deet but I apply it every few hours. Caution about permethrin! It is especially toxic to cats when wet, please be careful when using around cats. I keep all of my gear and MTB clothing away from my cat even when dry. Also, great tip about washing treated clothes in cold water to keep the treatment effective longer.

To unclog the aerosol can, hold upside down, nozzle facing away from you, then depress the button. This will expel some propellant and clean the nozzle. Works for cans of aerosol paint as well.

I'm a little late to the party about the shelter idea but you could make a easy assemble frame with 1/2" pvc and some side outlet 90° elbows.. 4 10' sicks would give you the 4 6' rails and the 8 2' end pieces.. I know it would be a tight fit but it would be a quick build. As for the shelter material it would be up to you for choosing 🙂

During our 2022 Rides, we did not encounter any tics, however in 2021, we had a few. We Always Check our selves after each ride. And use some sort of Repellant, we have used off with Deet. We most of the time forget to bring any, it's on our mental list of things to bring, but we forget. We will start using Permethrin!

Being a natural magnet for all biting critters, I get the SFR 36 liquid and dilute it, fill a bucket and soak everything, and let it dry. Then whatever is left in the bucket I put into a spray bottle for a quick retreatment where necessary. Very cost effective and nothing survives when it lands on me. I even soaked my hammock and backpack. I’m frequently in the jungle and can report that if an insect so much as looks at me now it dies!

When I was in the National Guard in the 90’s, we were issued an aerosol can of DDT. This only happened once but I used the can sparingly to make it last. That stuff was amazing! For the time I had it, I never saw any bugs. I treated my poncho which is what we used for shelter when sleeping in the field. I also treated the ground around my hooch with a quick light spray. My skin and clothing I used 100% Deet. I haven’t tried Permethrin yet but I’m confident it performs as “advertised.”

Very good advice! If I'm wearing long pants. I spray on the inside of the pant leg 6 to 8 inch high. As for deep usage. Have you tried the Militray insct repellent??? Strong, not as easy as the OFF to use. YES! It does eat some materials. Like wind breakers for one! All so on Sawyer web page, they say, that a TICK take a breath every 15 seconds. I thought that was interesting!! As all ways, Thanks for taking US along!!!!

Can also use light colored tick gaiters to go over your lower pant legs. Ticks are much easier to spot on these gaiters than on regular pants and has material that inhibits ticks from crawling. They are also treated with permethrin.

This is from personal experience only and is not backed up scientifically. Worked on the Jungle Book movie in the 90's in heavily tick and mosquito areas (Barrier Islands of South Carolina) and another show in New Orleans/Mandeville. My boss recommended dosing on Vitamin B (not sure which one) for a month before the show so I took a supplement and ate plenty of Zankou Chicken (massive garlic hit - an Armenian Chicken chain in Los Angeles). He and I were the only ones who only suffered 1 or 2 bites for the whole show while everyone else suffered. No ticks either. Personally, witnessed a mosquito land on my arm and immediately take off. I'm sensitive to any bug spray just a little bit on my body and I instantly taste it in my mouth and get very ill. That's why I can't walk through the gardening center of any store. Had a bad episode as a kid and almost passed out in Kmart. Was on the floor and they had to help me out. Again looked up Vitamin B and garlic on internet and they are mentioned a lot but scientific findings do not back these solutions. Plus I heard blood type is important when it comes to mosquitoes.

@@dinh71 Permethrin binds very strongly to fabric when dry. Very little is absorbed into skin plus skin has an enzyme that destroys permethrin. Thats why it wont as a repellent if sprayed on skin like deet does.

People will say they don't like the feel of Deet on their skin. It's probably because they use too much. If I'm headed into the woods in a T-shirt and shorts I'll apply no more than 2 drops to my hands, rub them together, then rub my hands over the exposed areas of my body. This will usually last me 2 - 4 hours and then I'll repeat the treatment. You can put it on heavier and it will probably last longer, but it does give you this greasy, tacky feel for a while. My meter is my nose. If I can still smell it on my skin it is still working.

I spray, spray, and spray everything, every time. I wear long sleeves and pants every time too. I’m not getting ticks, poison ivy, or massive mosquito bites. Ohio is bad with all of it. I only had one tick on my for a few minutes when I was 5 because I literally rolled in the grass. One day when I was 20 and out fishing with some friends, I literally picked 13 off of me once I realized I was covered. I found one in my hair the next morning. I ended up having to go to the dr a week or two later when I found a large lump behind my ear. It was a swollen lymph node from fighting some infection close to where I found the tick. Dr gave me the run down of how to deal with them on me if it happens again. Never again though lol. It was a blessing nothing worse happened from it.
