That’s why you hardly ever see great shots at BH we both are at the point we don’t care. 1st to last tee we only play our original shot no do overs what you see is first take only. Since playing golf out here we hardly ever take our game to the golf course. But that being said I’ve never enjoyed golf more.

Truer words have never been uttered. Just shot a 99, but it was Oct 29 in Western New York. A beautiful sunny day, with gorgeous fall colors on a pristine course enjoying nature. A six pack, some good tunes on the blue tooth speaker, and a good friend for company followed by a NY Strip dinner, and an old fashioned cocktail. A day filled with great moments and I didn't even know my total score until I just posted this. Today-... it wasn't about the score! It was about the vibe- which was immaculate.

Randy, I completely agree. I went to get a golf lesson at a golftec and the guy asked me what my goals were handicap wise and I told him around a 12 ( I was like a 30 at the time). I told him I’m not going on tour, I just want to get better to the point that I can go out keep the ball on the planet and have fun. He looked at me like I was crazy….. I didn’t go back. 😂

I’ve been listening to that book lately. Love it! Even though I feel like yelling “F*ck!” is a huge part of golf, it is really relaxing and fun to play the game and enjoy it without screaming obscenities and trying to hit ridiculously hard shots. And you’ll likely play better golf :)

Wow... Im 46, been playing since i was 11 and everything you just said ive done. We had Tiger as our role model in the game and thats just not achievable for the majority of us. Got older and had the money to spend on top brand equiptment. Did i get any better? No. I finally figured out and accepted the fact that i suck at golf but i love playing the game. My son figured it out faster than i did and we just love playing the game no matter how bad at it we are. We just want to have fun and thats all that matters. Thanks for this one Randy!

I am a late bloomer, 43 and started this beautiful(cruel) game only two years ago. First time listened thoughts about expectations and general mindset. All these time this was one of the biggest help to steer my focus on the important thing. Which is not the scorecard but the company and the game itself! Thank you for opening my eyes!🙏🏻

This may be the single best explanation of golf expectations I’ve ever heard. I feel like he was explaining exactly the way I feel and how my enjoyment is directly proportional to how low my score is on a given day, and that’s a hard cycle to break. It’s currently 8:15 am and I’m literally getting ready to go play a round. I came across this video and just had it playing in the background as I was getting ready. Im going to try this idea out today and see how it goes. 💯

From a 70-year-old man - It is great to see a 37-year-old share the REAL truth about golfing for us mortals. Why? because it took me till I was 60-something to figure that out. So many rounds of golf that left me upset, angry at the game, etc. - do I want to do awesome - YES but now it is about that great shot, that great played hole I just had, the people I am with OR even being by myself hitting balls around a course enjoying the day. So I enjoyed this video of "the truth about golf" - and if I may, I recommend another simple-to-read, great book by British golfer Brian Sparks and his journey through his golf career called "Positive Impact Golf". Guess when I read it? - yeah - I was 60-something and struggling with why I sucked at golf.😁 I am pretty sure that's why I love Fried Eggs golf and its content over the last few years. It is fun to watch you and your dad have fun playing golf. Thanks for reinforcing my feelings NOW about the game. ATB and use the $2 for a new dry marker😂🤣🤣😂😂

My uncle introduced me to golf about 20 years ago. He set the expectation that golf is fun. In the beginning we spent just as much time finding balls as we did hitting them and score was irrelevant. I'm much better now but I still play golf to have fun. I keep track of my score but it's still irrelevant and I enjoy every single round.

This ⬆️ Every single person who plays golf needs to watch this video, because this kind of thought process changed how I played and how fun I had. Although I kind of went about it in a different way to regain the fun factor by ignoring the score and going for absolutely everything, because that one worldy you pull out is all that you'll remember.

I found your video at the right time. I just shot a bad round at a tough course. This after an 80 the time before. The one thing I’ll say is that it’s tough to enjoy hitting out of deep juicy rough . I’m not sure how I’ll ever enjoy the round if most of my lies are deep rough cause the course is mowed poorly or that course likes having that aspect. That’s my biggest problem. I hate super deep juicy rough just off the fairways. Superintendents absolutely suck sometimes lol. Thanks

Profound wisdom! The magic of golf is you can play it your whole life. Striving to improve is a big part of what I enjoy about the game… so I definitely get upset when I play poorly. I have to remind myself a pro can shoot 63 one day and 73 the next, so I should also accept I won’t shoot a great score every round. The most helpful tip I’ve found for having fun no matter what happens is to give myself 10 paces after a bad shot to be upset… then that shot is forgotten. (Hopefully I didn’t duff it less than 10 paces!)

This is so true! I was only able to play once this year after 20+ years of playing 50 or more rounds every year. I shot in the 90s for the first time since I was in high school, and it was the most fun I've had playing golf in years. Just a fun round with a buddy and not worrying about every single swing thought or missed target or whatever. Probably hit 4 actual good shots the whole round, but loved every bit of it. Accepting where you are at is so important for the enjoyment of the game. Love this video Randy, just like so many others over the last several years. Thanks for continuing to entertain us nut jobs.

Life gets in the way of golf perfection, IF perfection was ever a real concept to begin. As now a 50-something golfer, I have accepted the fact that my best golf is behind me. But now I enjoy the game so much more without that pressure of setting those unrealistic goals like being a single-digit handicapper or hitting 300 yard drives. Surround yourself with guys that you enjoy being around and lay all the competitiveness aside. Enjoy a cigar and a beer and enjoy hanging with your mates. Enjoy your channel and thanks to you and your father for brightening my Saturday mornings. Peace

Six years ago I shot 69 on two different courses. It was the worst thing that's ever happened to me playing golf. I've been chasing those two scores ever since. Break 80 occasionally? Yeah, but what's a crappy 79 compared to the holy grail of being under par?? You've carded 3 under so how is it that you just took 92 strokes to "conquer" that flat 6000 yard muni you call home? The answer, of course, is we're not as good as our lowest scores and certainly not as good as we imagine. And you are so right on, Randy, that every tiny bit of improvement seduces you into thinking you've reached another level. But you haven't reached anything, really. Like Moses, you've been granted a tiny glimpse of what the promised land looks like but in reality it is just a glimpse and you are never going to live there.

The best round of golf I ever played was around 3 years ago. I was 62 years old at the time and the other three guys were in their 40's. I had zero expectations of beating them or even playing well; so I just stepped up to each shot and said to myself "you've hit this shot hundreds of times on the practice range and on courses, so just hit it". I ended up carding a 76 and winning by one stroke. It seemed so easy that day. Just let go.

Great stuff Randy. I think the quest for perfect can ruin the love of the game. When bad shots happen and frustration sets in, that perfection isn't happening anytime soon, neither is "good enough." My son (now a freshman in college) couldn't get passed it. I watched so many rounds that he would have been happy with spiral because he couldn't let it go and "reset" after a bad shot. Tempo got fast, grip got tighter, ball starts going everywhere, putts won't go in, round toasted. Compare that to my daughter who has little to expectations for her golf. She is a freshman and just completed her first HS season. She's gone from shooting low 60s for 9 holes in early summer to occasional low 40s as the season concluded. Finished 1st team All Conference. She doesn't expect perfection. She has more fun. A bogey is fine, pars are great. Hope her attitude and expectations stay the same as she matures.

Great explanation Randy. My wife and I visited a Bordeaux vineyard this week (not something we’ve done before - 25th wedding anniversary!) and you can imagine some of the pretension that was on display from a few of the guests. Towards the end of the visit I got chatting with the guide and told him how little I knew about wine. He said that some of the people who reaped the least enjoyment from wine were those with the most expertise, because they could always detect too much of this, or not enough of that. He said those who most enjoy wine, drink a wine they enjoy (which may be a €5 bottle) with the simple anticipation that they will enjoy it. Experience has taught me to enjoy cheap wine and bad golf!

Great explanation Randy. I'm exactly 10 years older than you are, and in my late 20's I started to notice that most skilled golfers that I played with, were also the most miserable golfers on the course. They could literally shoot a 72 and at the end of the round they were figuring up all the putts they missed that prevented them from having a 65. I never take my game seriously, I know I'm gonna make good shots and bad shots. But, I also know that if you pick up a club and it doesn't feel perfectly natural in your hands, you're not swinging a club often enough to play "good" golf. My goal is to swing a club in some fashion almost every day. I really like these style of videos in addition to the playing ones. Keep em coming.

I am now a 9 handicapper, and score mostly from 75 - 81.... don't get me wrong, I always strive to go lower, but if I don't happen to, I still go home satisfied. I've played with some friends in the past who will start an 18 hole round and leave angry after hole 6 because they aren't playing as good as they think they should!!!! So that's why Liv golfers went to a league where nothing really matters, for the love of the game! 😃 I get it now, thanks Randy...and money I suppose...

I did this with my business, everything I was taught was success equaled money. So I found myself chasing money and I lost the my why…why did I start my business. I wanted to take care of my wife and kids, but I also wanted to help people. So I changed, now as long as I can take care of people, which obviously includes my family, the joy was back. So now I believe success is when you have joy. Happiness is temporary, just like dopamine, but Joy is permanent. I can be joyful, even when things don’t go as planned. Which I’m also a follower of Christ and he gives me joy, even when the world says I shouldn’t. Sorry for the long comment, but my Joy is my success. Love the channel!

Great video.. same in every sport some people excel and most don't.. to get better you need to play regularly, where as alot of people we don't have the time.. because of work/family etc. i just enjoy being out with friends/family and having a laugh.. plus in the states who doesn't love the cart girl.coming round with beer.. it to me is like how girls shop, they go to chat shit and spend time together.. this is the mens equivalent..

Great video so friggen true. Absolutely love golf but definitely puts me in a bad mood when I play terrible. 23 handicap and I mentally think I should be a scratch golfer. Definitely will use this video and try to enjoy the game I love more. Thank you for your time and the video.

Could not agree more, Randy. Golf can be enjoyable no matter the out come, just have to shift your way of thinking. Oh, also glad to see these episodes of “Soft Boiled” are taking off.

I'm watching this as I get ready to go play a round. I play 2-3 times a week. I expect perfection every round. I have ONLY had that happen once when I shot a 68 with no boggies. I am still chasing that round....

Dopamine is how addiction works. Andrew Huberman has some great videos on this. Golf is great because you can never attain perfection in the game, so you can always work to improve and set goals which is actually an awesome way to fight this dopamine roller coaster. When you achieve something great in your life that you spent years/hours working at, most people get a ton of dopamine. Harsh reality is that however high your dopamine levels get, you dip below your baseline by almost the same amount. Which explains why many people feel depressed shortly after achieving great goals. Hence, why golf is great. There's always a new goal to work at. Let the process of working at the goals, not their attainment bring you joy... basically.

True, True! But I can't get there 😄 stupid game 😄 You cleaning off a tee box in your backyard reminded me of over 30 yrs ago, my parents telling me to mow lawn before they get home from work. So I would mow a tee station in front yard and a green in backyard and chip over the house 😆 never broke a window 👍 That was ENJOYMENT! 😁

It seems to me, some people deep in their mind, get so angry because somehow they think the score they shoot defines them. When in reality what defines them is how they react to the score they shoot. Enjoy Golf!
