Ashley, we are currently in a drought in Texas. Any handwashing of dishes I do in the kitchen sink I do over a bucket. I am rinsing the soap suds off dishes into the bucket and using that grey water to water plants that are starting to lose leaf color. Online I saw someone say that it's better to do that and worry about the effect of soap then let them starve for water alone. I'm thinking the soap in the water is diluted and possibly a great way to add to the watering of our outside plants. Thoughts?

There is a reason why my father uses a mixture of Dawn and Vinegar to remove EVERYTHING - including rust and mould from his Shower & surrounding glass doors! He mixes it together in a spray bottle, after putting on an Air Respirator (you DO NOT want to breathe the mist/fumes in! ) He leaves the cleaner to sit for 20 mins, then returns with his respirator on, and rinses everything…leaving the shower beautifully spic and span! My Dad’s help with housework has been a massive boon for my mom , as she has had multiple shoulder and knee surgeries. *Note: This cleaner is strong, so wear GLOVES, turn the fan on after applying the cleaner, close the door to minimize fumes escaping, and make sure too cover your face with a RESPIRATOR, as this cleaner is effective and “natural” - but irritating to skin, eyes, and lungs!

This is a great video, thank you so much! I have only started using Dawn dish soap recently (because of your 'bringing plants back in' video) and liked it because it really cleaned the leaves quite nicely! So that was a bonus, don't know if others have found certain plants where that's been an issue. I think you have to be much more careful with certain plants/type of leaves and use your discretion. Thanks again for top-notch, science-based information!

Kind of a side note. I work in the concrete and steel manufacturing industry. The grim an dirt gets embedded into my skin. I used many products like gojo cleaners. I found nothing works better then dawn dish soap to get my hands clean. When I use it in my garden I'm diluting it in water and other advices. It's just a small enhancer. They make a Dawn 'free and clear' which I like to use. Don't use it all the time. Only when it is called for.

I like such in depth study beyond the common concept about using dish soap as pest spray in the garden. I used Dawn and cooking oil mixed with water and sprayed on an okra plant's foliage to stop the spread of leaf mining. It worked but a day later all the leaves that were treated turned yellow showing signs of dryness and spots which I did not know from what disease. They were all trimmed . Yes I think their protective layer was destroyed by the spray. I do not want to invalidate the effectiveness of using dish soap but there need to be a more standardized concentration ratio to follow, and be used only when infestation cannot be dealt with other milder measures.

I need a surfactant when attempting to re-moisten Coco coir, which can be quite hydrophobic. Often the CC surface will pool the water when spraying/misting instead of adsorbing it. In that case the detergent is not attacking foliage. Surfactants are also sometimes required to dissolve hydrophobic herbicides or additives.

Might harm your plants but dawn works 100% on wasps, horsefly’s, carpenter bees and other insects that breath through their bodies. I use a 1 gallon sprayer that has the hand pump. Add an ounce or so of dawn to the water until it looks blue and spray away. Adjust the nozzle to shoot further and spraying wasp nest is easy. Just don’t stand under the nest as they will be falling right down as they suffocate. A wasp will die in less than 10 seconds after. You can spray them right out of the air. I’ve tried expensive pump squirt guns and trust me a 10-12$ garden sprayer is the best tool.

So you got me thinking. I’ve noticed that some plants WITHOUT small hairs get leaf damage and turn brown when watered in hot weather. Not necessarily direct Sun but hot air. Take Persicaria amplexicaulis as an example. Could it be that the hot air that surrounds the plant or direct sunlight is softening the waxy coating of the leaf that is making it susceptible to water making contact with the leaf. I’m struggling to understand the mechanisms that cause this.

@DerekBrandschwei7 ай бұрын
This is unfortunately a bit misleading, and I don't blame you. There is a lot of confusing information on the Internet. All soaps and detergents are surfactants. The word Surfactant is a portmanteau from the words surface acting. It is a generic term that describes how the molecules work. Natural soaps and synthetic detergents can have very different ingredients, they can have different applications and strengths, but fundamentally they all function similarly and are all surfactants. One end of the molecule is attracted to water and the other end is attracted to oil - that's it. The issue with synthetic detergents is their strength/concentration can be very high and thus needs to be diluted appropriately, compared to more gentle soaps. In all cases, you don't want to leave the Surfactant sitting on the surface of the plant, so after application all soap has to be rinsed off either immediately or within a couple of hours.

Hi, I found that if you use the inside of a banana skin and rub it onto leaves it will instantly cover the leaves with banana peel wax and give the protective effect of leaf wax, plus a good healthy shine. What do you think about this? Will it be useful to apply after using soap?

I wouldn’t call dishwashing detergent, dishwashing soap, because dishwashing soap is a detergent, Not a soap.

Can vegans use soap if it is made from animal fat?

It would depend on if your vegan for health reasons or moral reasons. I was hardcore vegan for years and wouldn't have used it during that time frame
