There's a third option, Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA. It's a polymer modified cement product, but is made with high-hydrated cement technology, instead of the typical Portland cement. Doesn't require a sealer, doesn't get efflorescence, and is a replacement for sanded and unsanded grouts. We tried it and it seems pretty good, but you have to mix it properly because it can set very fast if you aren't careful. Cool water and slow mixing is best. I like it better than epoxy grout. Check it out sometime.

I think you nailed it! I’m re-thinking my bathroom renovation. Definitely going to be switching my thoughts on how to install the new tiles. Great job.👍🏻

Do testing for yourself. Always easier than all or nothing.

I'm not discrediting this video. However with the coffee demo, the grout when it hardens ,it 'crackes' away from the smooth edge of the tub. That leaves a open channel for the coffee to move down, that is why it happened so fast as the grout separates from the container. There is a small piece that didn't show any penetration, that would be a section that didn't separate yet. It would be interesting to see a transection to see it away from the edge as well as at the acid damage area. Also, I've had that my stainless steel was basen gets pitted from lemon juice if it is left on it, just something to keep in mind.

What about cleanup after installation? With regular grout, you can apply it like plaster, just float it into the joints and then use the edge of the float to scrape most of the excess off of the tile. Then after it cures, you wash it off with a damp sponge, and maybe finish by polishing the tile with a muriatic acid solution and an other water rinse to get rid of the haze. How do you keep the epoxy from leaving a film on the tile?
@purelivingforlife Жыл бұрын
Water cleanup after a grout float. Same process as cement grout. They do sell a haze remover if it’s an issue.

If you use this, even if it's only as grout and not as a backer, how hard would it be to replace a damaged tile?
@purelivingforlife Жыл бұрын
Replacing damaged tile sucks. No harder than cement grout.

I literally avoid tile as much as humanly possible because of all the issues with grout you just described. Neat to know that there are alternatives now.

Truth! It’s lucrative for the cleaning and sealing industry but hell for the owner.

How do you figure how much you will need ? I have 1'x1' floor tiles with maybe 1/4" grout line.

Most products give you a coverage estimate or you can use a calculator like this one. www.mapei.com/us/en-us/product-calculator/tile-grouts

You mentioned getting it professionally cleaned. What does that entail? Who would you hire to do this? Can you do it yourself? Thanks.
@purelivingforlife Жыл бұрын
Hiring professionals is challenging. The best way is to ask friends or your local tile retailers who they would recommend. If in doubt ask the pro to test clean an area using their process. If good, proceed. If not, look elsewhere. A true pro will be happy to show off their work. They should use a tool called a tile spinner which is like an indoor pressure washer with a vacuum to recover soiled water. We may do a video on this on the KERFhome channel. Would that be helpful?

You've sold me, I hope some pros weigh in here as to downsides they have seen.
@purelivingforlife Жыл бұрын
Always happy to hear downsides. 20 years in the industry. Haven’t found one yet…. But it’s surprisingly rare for the reasons mentioned at the end of the video. Pros are scared of it because it’s not their routine and they get paid for the install not the upkeep.

What's your background? You sound like a guy trying to sell epoxy grout! You talk negative about sealers. Many sealers are mixed into the grout instead of water and are about a third the cost of epoxy grout.
@purelivingforlife Жыл бұрын
Sealers are fine. It’s that 99% of people using them wrong and therefore they are expensive junk. You cannot mix a sealer into a grout. Not flourochemical sealers. Poly sealers aren’t sealers they’re finishes. No sales pitch here. Just facts.
