The other night, I went out to dinner and saw this man walk in. He looked great -- super stylish, with amazing hair, and an incredible outfit. He was on point until I saw his shoes. He destroyed his outfit! He was so close! His boots were super cool, but they were more appropriate for jeans. So I want to cover how to properly dress up boots, whether or not you're wearing jeans or next level such as chinos, slacks or even a suit.
Boots are the sexiest most rugged and unbelievably manly shoes that a guy can wear. The trick is knowing how to combine wearing boots properly because you can take a potential boot opportunity and turn it into a liability by wearing the wrong ones. That being said, here are the boots-wearing rules:
Don't wear cheap boots. If it's a moral thing, like you're vegan, that's fine. But if you want to pinch a penny, don't do it. Cheap book boots look cheap and fall apart quickly. Spend just a little bit more money and get real leather. They will look amazing!
Do not wear dressy boots with casual jeans. Some boots are casual but some are a little more elevated and aesthetic. Casual boots go with casual jeans. Never wear dressy boots with casual jeans. When wearing dressy boots, some are created to be more casual than others.
Choose brown when dressing up a pair of boots. Brown is more fashion-forward. Guys are comfortable with black because it matches everything. Brown can too, and it adds another level of richness and texture to an outfit. Check out my examples. You can get multiple boots so you can have both colors.
Change the aesthetic of your outfit by switching your boots. Go from something dark and mysterious to more surprising and daring by switching from a black boot to a gray suede boot.
You can dress down a dressy boots but you can't dress up a casual boot. Dressy boots vs casual boots:
Suede is casual; same with matte leather.
Stitches around the toe are casual.
Shinier is dressier.
Rubber soles and ones that stick out further than the upper or the leather are casual.
Laces are more casual as well.
Dressy is cleaner.
Brogues laced up can be versatile.
The toe is another indicator
The clean, low profile is dressier.

I have 6 pair of Thursday Boots. It should be 4 or 5. If had a "do over" I'd get either the Terracotta or Toffee Captains. I have the matte black Captain Storm Kings, Shadow grey Cavalier Chelsea, black Cavalier, Honey Suede Dukes, Natural Captains and Brandy Captains. I hardly every wear the Brandy Captains. Love boots. I have several pairs for different occasions. I prefer the more casual style and I do shop around for different types. Timberland and Lugz can sometimes have a nice boot option as well if you are looking for something really casual without breaking the bank. Those brands are a bit more youthful though. If you are in your 40's and up then I would say go with Thursday Boots and Johnston&Murphy as these are more refined and have a very stylish look, even with the casual options.

I ordered from Thursday a great pair brown of boots. They we here so tight to get them in that by the 3rd time a wear them, the inside lining (of the right one) tear apart. I contacted Thursday but didn’t replaced them. They need to work on the warranty. That’s the reason I haven’t ordered more boots from them. I still wear them as is because I really like the look!

7:57 right here he says that you can dress down a dressy boot... So his story in the beginning is kinda confusing to me. What did that guy in the biker jacket and dressy Chelseas do wrong? Well they looked dressy by what he described. A shiny leather, minimal profile, no clear stitching. His pants weren't denim, but the biker jacket is very casual.

Honestly, Thursday boots are nice for their price. But I've had to return a pair of captains because the quality control was not great, there were rips and cuts on the sole. I have a pair of cadets on the way, I'm sure I'll keep it this time. Already on the third try with this one, hoping to get one that's not full of flaws.

I hope that works out for you, I know when they were transitioning to their new factory they had some quality problems because they were outsourcing manufacturing during that transition and those third party manufacturers were cutting corners, substituting materials and making them for cheaper 👎🏼 Thursday has caught on to that so hopefully they should be fully good to go on the quality for boots moving forward, I know I just received a pair of matte black Thursday captains that I'm sure are from their new factory, they are super nice and flawless from what I can tell.

I just bought Carmina chelsea boots in brown suede at onlie thrift for under than 300 usd. It's very light wright and really love'em, like I wouldn't think to buy any other chelsea other than this Carmina 😂, I really like its Inca last/rain. For more rugged but still dressy I own Sagara Bootmakers (Indonesian brand). The price was also affordable for its norwegian-welt. For more rugged I also have classic Engineer Boots from Red Wing, bench re-built and resoled by cobblers. This is my to go boots when it comes rainy season in Jakarta 😂. I don't own too many boots, I sold my Red Wing Lineman boots & paratrooper jump boote because I ain't wear'em too often, but I agree boots are sexy 😎, got more compliment with'em.

Many "Heritage" boots borrow from the look of the WWII field issue boot. Modern combat boots are commonly sold as "Tactical Boots" which are supremely capable and comfortable, but aren't going to get you any style points. 🙂

I finally was able to get a pair of the new black matte captains that have the new kingmaker last, i can feel a difference between that boot and my first pair of captains I got a year ago, the brown ppl leather, and a pair of limited edition leather theu offered late last year. And i have a pair of Scout chukkas in Mocha and im super happy with all of these boots. To be honest I've resisted getting a pair of Chelsea boots because I felt to me they look too feminine, come to find out the Chelsea boot actually started as a women's boot. 🤔 Go figure, lol. If you like Thursdays then I would suggest the Brandy Captains or maybe the Brown Captains. IMO the Brandy Captains look nice with both dark blue & black jeans and very nice with chinos too!

If you've got a little more money to spend, look at the Grant Stone Brass or Diesel boot in "Earth" (A dark CF Stead suede), or a Truman service boot in Java Waxed Flesh or Stone Rambler. All are in the $325-$480 range, are neutral colored and will go with pretty much anything, and will serve you very well for many years. 👍

Yes, leather boots are something that every man should own. I advise starting with the Thursday Captain or the Red Wing Iron Ranger if you have the money. However, playing more for higher quality is worth it. Companies such as Nicks and Whites make fantastic leather boots. Sure, it's in the 600$, but it is so worth it to save up for it.
