I would to use more videos like this for the folks I work with but anything with the term "disabled people" is a no for us. In the future, if you could use the term "people with disabilities" that would feel much more inclusive. thank you!!

Hi, thanks for your message. We appreciate that for some people and in some situations, using "person first language" like "people with disabilities" is preferred, as it is felt that it centres the person rather than the disability. However, at Stopgap we use the term ‘Disabled People’ as we follow the ‘Social Model of Disability’. The Social Model of Disability states that people may have an impairment or medical condition but that the disabling barriers such as oppression, exclusion and discrimination people with impairments face are not an inevitable consequence of having an impairment but are caused instead by the way society is run and organised. The Social Model of Disability holds that people with impairments are ‘disabled’ by the barriers operating in society that exclude and discriminate against them. If you would like more information on the Social Model of disability and why we choose this word structure the following video from Shape Arts is very helpful. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGWudpKVhKh-g9k If you still find the term 'Disabled People' an issue, many of our more recent videos in our Home Practice playlists use the phrase "inclusive dance". We hope you will be able to enjoy our videos and find them useful.
