The poem in full: www.poetryfoun...
I thiiiiink this was the first Robert Frost poem I ever read... who would've guessed a few years later I'd be studying 20 of his poems and making a KZbin channel all about Robert Frost! The world is weird bros.
As you may have noticed in some of these videos the coloured annotations are in my own handwriting (as in this one) and sometimes they're typed. In my opinion it looks a lot more scruffy in this style so apologies for that - I literally made this powerpoint 6 months ago, back when I hadn't had the brainwave to just type up the annotations and save myself a load of wasted time. Haven't uploaded it before now because I kept getting requests for other poems... grrr. (haha just kidding - I love it when you guys engage with the channel)
Another flaw in this video (gotta love indulging your inner self-critic) I noticed while rewatching it was that I seem to have cut out like every natural pause I had in the narration, so the video moves pretty fast from one slide to the next. I tried my best to edit some of those unnatural transitions but I think there's still a few left in. So ya might wanna exercise that good old pause button while watching this one.
My sources of information for ze powerpoint...
www.sparknotes...
owlcation.com/...
www.shmoop.com...
And woopwoop two fellow Frost video makers...
• Analysis of Stopping B...
• Stopping by Woods on a...
And as I said in the video, my source for that weird bit 8 minutes in about the rhymes in each stanza mirroring their theme was.. myself! Pretty sure all that did was demonstrate my insanity rather than helping you understand the poem better. What do you reckon?
Next up will be my analysis of Two Look at Two, coming April 1st. :) See you then!
Let's end this with a motivational quote shall we.
"Being resilient does not mean being a fearless robot who never has set-backs. It means keeping your head high and believing in yourself through adversity. At first they will ask why you're doing it. Later they will ask how you did it."
Whatever you're going through right now, you are not alone and your struggles are completely valid. Time is an amazing healer and I know you're strong enough to get through whatever it is you're currently dealing with. Your people are out there and your time is coming. No actually, screw that. Your time is NOW, and the universe has your back. Achieve your goals, smile lots and keep movin' up. You got this thing.

When my daughter was in 4th grade she showed me a picture of a horse in a snowy woods. Her teacher had read the poem to the class. Everytime I hear it i think back over the years to that day. You reciting it as a young woman around my daughters age i believe made it extra special. Thank you.

I think the poet likes the scenery, solitude, and peacefulness and intrigue of the woods during a snowy time, and likes the idea of a time-out to relax, but his horse, of all things, reminds him that there's nothing for them here, and it's time to plod on again to fulfill the duties of life, and so it reflects how hard life can be.

Hello I just wanted to say this was great thank you for this, I’ve always had a inexplicable gravitation towards this poem especially the “dark and deep” part - then when you mentioned the unaliving interpretation - shook me
@willbaskin700

Considering Frost says he wrote it in one 20 minute sitting, as if it came to him out of the blue. So I doubt he intended any clever metaphors. That said all poetry leaves itself to the readers interpretation and that's what makes it interesting. Well done

Yeah I like that it doesn’t have one clear meaning, we can speculate what we think it means and best of all, apply it to our own situations and contexts!

I loved the analyses. Thank you for it. I have reached some similar thoughts on the poem but you added things which had been unnoticed by me. About the horse shaking his head, I also infer that horses cannot understand moments of beauty as it is a very humane and contemplative feeling. I agree that the underlying topic is more about surrendering to a "deadly" moment of beauty rather than move forward, take all responsabilities. However, the repetition of the last line gives this idea of tiredness and we cannot deny stopping by the lake would be dying (he starts the poem thinking no one would find or see him there in the dark).

Well, you can tell by my internet name that I really like this poem. For me, it really speaks to where I am in this juncture of my life, especially since my mother recently died. Because of my faith, I feel an optimism and attraction to the afterlife. But I also feel an obligation to do the things I believe God wants me to do before I die. I strive to be a better person, not to earn salvation but to do God's will. I don't quite have the hang of it yet. There's a lot for me to learn and do in this world but I'm torn between this life and the life to come. Read Philippians 1:23

While I am generally not a fan of "sometimes the curtains are just purple" type of analysis, that is, I do think things like that often do symbolise somethig, either intentionally or not. But, I think in the case of this poem there is still meaning to be found just by taking it at face value. Man stops by snowy woods on his way to somewhere. He might not have a permission to be there, but there's no one to see it so it is fine, and so he takes a moment to take in the beauty of the scene before he has to keep moving, things to do, places to be

Loved it! A really good analysis and loved your original thoughts too :) Frost can be deceptive with how simple his poems sound but they feel quite deep and alluringly profound and then you're there wondering did he really mean all that in a poem he wrote in 20 minutes or did he merely dream up a lovely scene lol

I can't believe I stopped to listen to something with "analysis" and "poem" in the same description. Must have been the brief glimpse of "oxymoronic" out of the corner of my eye. Still, your voice is lovely. My instinct suggests to me that Mr. Frost paused in the woods on the way home where beautiful words spilled from his soul. And he could not wait to get home to write them down, "Elinor! Break out the sherry, I think I've got a winner!"

I might be wrong as I haven't taken a deep dive into the poem in a while, but I don't think he actually does go to the village? In terms of how he got to where he is now in the woods, that's left ambiguous, so the journey up to this point is mysterious. Hope that helps x

It says “my horse” in the poem so I don’t think it’s from the horse’s perspective (although that would be cool). A lot of Frostie’s poems tend to be autobiographical or at least based on an experience of his so I tend to assume it’s a male protagonist x
