Am personally a big fan of SDR. In the headlong rush to HDR (with what, FOUR different standards?) we forgot that OLED, laser projection, etc are the real breakthroughs.

These guys are wrong just so you know HDR implementation is terrible by many companies and across the board. No competent director studio or Creator would ever have two completely different color palettes for a TV show like this. It's improper HDR implementation and these guys just say it's how it's supposed to be.

Ok, im surprised not more people are talking about this, but HDR graded film is actually darker because they increase the range between the darkest gradient and brightest gradient even more than what is captured on film with the HDR capture camera. This will make for a contrasty HDR picture, albeit a very artificial picture, since thats not how our eyes works in most circumstances. Sometimes it looks good, other times it just looks artificial. An extreme example of this is the newest Dr. Strange movie. It looks so artificially contrasty. It looks cinematic, but it just looks very weird with contours looking so dark in broad daylight scenes. It doesnt look right.

You guys have me falling behind on my episodes. :) I took some time to compare the House of the Dragon episode via my Verizon recorded episode and the same episode through the HBOMax app in the display. As far as black level detail goes it was very similar between both sources and nowhere as bad as what you showed. I guess it is display dependent. The only difference I could see with the Dolby Vision version was a little more color saturation in the wardrobe. Thank you for your KZbin contribution to home theater. Keep up the great work.

I watched on my Sony 950h (75") & it was good (DV bright). It wasn't quite as bright as your SDR example but it was absolutely no where near your HDR example. I was wondering why people were complaining. Those examples are drastic. I'm glad I haven't replaced my TV with a newer model.

It seems unless the display can do HDR correctly 1000 nit's or brighter either natively or through HDR tone mapping you will have issues with the overall dark scene material. I recently tried out a 100" UST projector system. The first UST projector had no tone mapping and suffered on both top and bottom with HDR. I used Eternals for the dark reference and some scenes from The Meg for bright scenes both HDR transfers. The same movies in UHD format did not suffer from the low and peak luminance issues that the HDR transfers had with the projector. I put a Lumagen radiance pro in line to correct the HDR and also benefitted from the 3D LUT calibration. This was a big improvement. I still was not happy with the projectors lack if good black levels. I then tried a different brand projector that had better contrast/ black levels and built in HDR tone mapping. This one handled the HDR tests well without the Lumagen. But at the end of the day the higher contrast made some of the DLP anomalies more noticeable. So back to a quality emissive display. I thank Value Electronics for working with me through this journey. You guys keep up the great work on the KZbin videos.

on my s95b i used the vivid blown out oversaturated mode for house of dragon episode 7. I never use and it drives me nuts its so saturated and bright, but it allowed me to see the screen honestly with how i feel the intent should have been, similar to the SDR lol. THe weird part is i maxd the brightness in calibrated mode and still couldn't see anything, but with the default vivid/ dynamic mode i was able to.

One TV displaying SDR and the other playing the exact same content in Dolby Vision. This needs to be done via Netflix and Prime streaming services. There are zero such comparisons anywhere in existence. I bet what you will find is that you find SDR to be the better format. Can you do this?

So I checked it out on my C1 that's calibrated via 3DLUT and it indeed looks like you show in this video. Terrible with no detail and black and white. I fired up my JVC x9000 with MadVR's tone mapping for the HDR version too and it looks like colour with all the details there, just like the SDR version & the moon lit sky actually has impact. MadVR is quite amazing at what it can recover and in instances of really poor mastering like this - it might be the only way to get a useable image.

It's about time someone put up info about DV :) and I know FOMO did made a video before comparing DV with Samsung. I am so TIRED of people complaining about Samsung not having DV. In my opinion those people just don't know DV and want it but don't quite understand it. With a Samsung TV you are STILL getting HDR whether that same content in DV on a Sony or LG Tv you will see HDR in HRD10 or HDR10+ and I think DV is too dark and also you can't control the settings when it's locked down, on a Sony TV you can't even opt out of DV using internal apps to choose custom instead and that's more of a disadvantage to me. DV dark is too dark and DV bright is too bright, the controls should not be locked down so a user can adjust the contents how they want it to be (yes I know creations intent, got it!), not everyone want to see it dark or bright so options to control it should be there! Some contents on Apple + in DV are so dark that I use a Roku stick instead and it's still in HDR but HDR10 and in my opinion it look better so why people want DV on a Samsung TV? just to say they have it? well to be honest they are not missing too much. Instead what Samsung need are: 1. Fix the new Tizen 2. Put an input button on the remote (for years people are asking for this!!) 3. Faster access to change input, sound and pic like Sony (this is connected to #1 above) Like Brian I would say LCD still have an overall advantage over OLED, unless if you're putting the OLED in a dark room and not showing news or sports logos often then it's good but that makes it limited to what it can do. When I say LCD I mean a high quality QLED. I know they are DV and OLED fans so I wouldn't be able to change your mind and that's ok, at the end of the day people should choose a Tv that they like and what what other people like but getting the correct info is important! Big up to you guys for all the reviews and also to Rtings.

EVERY SINGLE MOVIE I WATCHED WAS BETTER IN SDR, when I compared it with HDR version! So the answer is - NONE! SDR is great in every TV, in every projector, and some (not all) HDR movies are just fine in some TVs. So why the hell do WE NEED IT?! It even changes the color temperature of the movie, so we don't recognize them anymore! Most look just Sepia! WHICH IS NOT CORRECT!

Its so variable for every single movie or TV show. There are scenes which look better in SDR and scenes which look better in HDR. The big problem is that most of the time SDR has a more pleasing and consistent picture. I've tested thousands of titles HDR vs SDR. Even with its limited colour range (which doesn't always look obvious). Dolby Vision on Blu-Rays is my preferred option but older titles in HDR and DV are usually not well done. So I end up choosing SDR

Creators intent does not look like what we see on home TVs. Thanks to many factors. Who says the director got his way and got everything to look exactly like they wanted anyway?! Mastering monitors are 1000 nit all around with no ABL, home OLEDs are nothing like that. LCDs will get you there but not OLEDs. So darker HDR scenes will always look so much worse on OLED compared to LCD or mastering monitors. Horror and scifi movies on OLED with HDR look spectacular but that's about it.

The first one looks great in hdr 😔 it seems that hdr presentation is just getting worse lol. I heard that that they essentially take a 100nit image and add highlight detail, and now because of so many brightness complaints they might go to 200nit instead. But that completely goes against the point of hdr, which is to display contrast in the way we perceive it in real life, not a 100nit image with some bright highlights... It's really starting to ruin show/movie watching for me honestly.

In regards to the dual cell. I have the Aus version and to me it is better than the LG CX I had by a decent margin. I got rid of the OLED because of this. Blacks are OLED for 99% of the time. It is much brighter in regards to APL. Dolby Vision is spectacular. Motion is worse for 24p content but better for SOE. Hisense was shut out due to politics and marketing for dual cell and others will not allow that tech to get a foot in. Even though the top mastering monitors are dual cell.... People tend to ridicule what they don't understand, there is a touch of that here. It's supposed to be night with just a touch of moonlight, in SDR it look like a hazy overcast day. On my Hisense OLED (not available in the US) this scene works very well in DV IQ and DV custom, there is just a hint of near-black posterization but HDR is demanding and most TVs can't reproduce it properly. Make better TVs, folks, OK? P.S. However HDR Dark is too dark in normal scenes on the Hisense as well, even in a pitch black room, agreed. That really doesn't sound like the picture as it's supposed to be. Also, forgot to mention, on the Hisense it's not black and white in any DV mode, the blue of the skies is there as well as other colors but less prominent.

Nothing is graded in Dolby Vision. It's first graded in HDR, then DV Content Mapping Unit Hardware or Software analyzes the content and automatically creates dynamic Metadata. Then the colorist can adjust to creators intent. In some cases, it goes untouched, because the CMU has done a great job. On my Vizio, all the dark scenes were similar to SDR in APL. I keep trying to get people to listen, but it is the display manufacturer processing on top of DV.

@@damau5687 Dolby Vision requires a good factory calibration to the PQ curve, D65 white point, and Gamma 2.2. You can't change the color gamut. No additional image or color processing. Unfortunately, chroma upsampling LG (HDMI Deep Color), Vizio( Full UHD Color), Sony (HDMI Enhanced) affects DV when turned on. Which cause visual artifacts when paired with Dolby Vision. In some cases you get black crush or highlights clipped, color saturation issues. Skin tones can be off. APL which is the most noticeable and relates to FOMO video. I mean it just seems like that director doesn't know how to apply HDR effectively. Like you mentioned a bunch of 2K upscale HDR10 basic movies, that I already knew never actually used the full color gamut. I don't think rec 2020 can make some thing that was shot in rec 709 on set into a full color gamut. Film on the other hand, has more potential than something shot in HD rec709. There's more color to capture on film. Oh and if it's a brand new 4K digital camera with rec2020 or better, than you are basically assured to get your money's worth. Also wasn't the 4K disc version of that GoT episode said to be way better, because it's not overly compressed like everything you stream in 4K? Is this all about streaming? It is, you didn't take. @K474K75W

From all the comments here you are the only one that can see the truth. There is only one guy who is at least as popular as the channels pushing for latest TVs and HDR that has been screaming for more that 2 years that HDR is a marketing scam, and there is a video engineer and calibration expert Joe Kane that is saying that HDR is performing worse that SDR (even to this day) in a video from 6 years ago. If you can really understand what he is saying, if you know how colors/brightness/gamma/contrast works you would see that he is right, even with the latest technology we still don't have enough for a true HDR experience and HDR doesn't have a unified standard like SDR has. So that's why HDR (which ever of them) will always look worse than SDR cuz it's requirements can't be completed with the current technology to put it simply it's not complete yet and it won't be for another at least 10 years. It seems that they( by they i mean the marketing minds behind all this) fucked up with 3D TV's and curved TV's but somehow managed to fool all the world with HDR. Just calibrate your TV (not professionally but using your eyes) on SDR until you are satisfied with what you see(this is personal to each of you), now apply the same settings to HDR modes (some settings might not be available and some settings may appear while in an HDR mode depending on the TV model) and compare them, the image in HDR should look better right? i mean newer and better technology right? , in every case of comparison you will see that HDR will look like those pictures in marketing advertisement, bleak, faded, and SDR will look brighter and richer in colors, just be careful who you watch on YT cuz most (most not all) of content creators pushing excuse me "reviewing" products are paid by said companies, there are a few rare gems that risk and tell the truth edits : self nazi grammar checking

These guys are AV amateurs and have no idea. Critical evaluation using "chromecast"?????? That's just crazy! Don't bother with this nonsense.

Hisense rebate info regarding best buy is inaccurate. I had mine accepted. Actually from the Hisense promo page look @ "where to buy", best buy is on the list, with a direct link.

FINALLY!!!! Other people thinking what I’m thinking. This is why I don’t care for “DIGITAL TRENDS” Channel and that guy. He hates Vivid, everything must be in movie mode. Creators know best?! NO. FKK the creators I’ve worked beside them. If I’m watching a fantasy world what’s wrong with me liking that world to not look like this one? Yea I like Vivid and SDR and 10-15% over saturated color. I don’t give a shtt if it looks like the real world I want eye candy. Or we might as well be listening to the radio or a podcast.
