We want to thank William, a High School wood shop teacher from Olympia, Washington for requesting this episode get posted. His DVD became scratched and not viewable and he uses this project every year to introduce the concepts of framing and carpentry to his students. How great is that! A major goal of starting this channel is to preserve the rich history of The New Yankee Workshop and pass on the love of woodworking to future generations. We’d love to hear in the comments from other teachers to see how we can help support the next generation make more sawdust.

About ten years ago, my son requested Home Depot cards for his birthday because he wanted a shed in his backyard. It was his first house so I bought him this video with the plans and a month or so later he built this shed. I only got to help with the floor and a couple of walls but it looked very impressive when done. The only real change was he put the door on the he narrow end. Thanks Norm for all the memories.

I actually watched the first NYW episode back in 1989. I was hooked. As you are well aware, there wasn't much for the "amateur" woodworker that we could call teaching and reference. Over the next 20 years, I had the VCR set up for every episode. The video quality back in the early 90's on video tape were the best for the time. I, too, am eternally grateful to Norm and his staff for all the great projects. My absolute favorite is the Deluxe Router Station. I still use that today. With so many woodshops at high schools now closed, the NYW library is a valuable resource to learn woodworking.

Norm was a great teacher of the highly overlooked career of carpentry. I remember clearly his thoughtful instructions for both construction and repair of existing projects. The work ethic he exhibited served me well in my varied roles during my career. This series is so needed in todays world. And Russell Morash, what a concept! Whooda thunk that a plaid shirt would set the standard for generations of young men?

What a great carpenter. He anticipates where he needs his nailers, the ridge gussets, the bump-outs on the fascia to allow the corner boards to slide underneath. A lot of people would do the fascia after the corner boards and get lost. He has a ton of experience.

This kind of construction was clearly Norm’s bread and butter. It was a great project but what made NYW special is that we saw this capable guy learn to build high quality heirloom pieces. Just compare the horrible coffeetable made from pallets (early) to the highboy (later).

I'm having trouble with this shed, as with the other one. Can someone explain why this will work without rafter ties? The snow load and potential tree-limb fall on top of the ridge seems to tell me that such a load would force the walls out. The other shed at least seems to have more support on the ridge "beam" ends. This one is just kind of sitting on the gable ends. I am sure this is OK, but can someone tell me _why_ this is OK?

When you made the bottom footing of the shed and you want it to be able to move said shed at that time build forklift points on the bottom. I fit was a permanent shed beside the footing put 30 pounds of felt on the bottom framing then shoot foam inside and use silicone to seal the floor plywood to the footing, if this shed is to be in New England-type weather.
