Some stores that were once a part of our lives are now gone forever. We never thought they would go away, but now that they have, many of us would love to shop there just one more time. In this video we will take a look at some of the defunct stores we all miss!

If you ever get to go to Australia, it's still open there. The US company licensed the name and logo to an Australian company, but it is identical.

Tower Records was an awesome place. My sister and I would spend hours on Fridays after school browsing CD's and listening to new releases that they played overhead. They had a very quiet and comfy classical music section behind soundproof doors. We would go in there to take brake from the loud music. There was a KMart nearby where we would stock up on junk food for our weekend tv watching. We saved it for late night TV because our parents would have gone crazy if they knew we were consuming so much junk food.

We HATED to say we went there ‘cuz it was a nationally known company. We wanted to support our local businesses, our Strawberries Records and our tiny video rental companies as opposed to Blockbusters (If only we knew then what we now do)! 👍😊

Theres a lot of old shops I miss, that I enjoyed shopping at, or simply because of their prominent advertising that was a big part of my childhood. Thrifty's, Pic N Save, Hughe's, Dale's Jr, Kmart, Sears, Dearden's, the list goes on. What a shame that all that matters these days is Amazon and Walmart.

I’m from MA & I know that things aren’t as neighborly without our “Fayva” shoe stores. Our “Zayer’s”. Without our “Strawberries Records”, & our (exclamation) “Filene’s”. I also liked going to the “Woolworth” store, where we smelled the popcorn when we came in, the kids could ride the electric horse ride on the way out. Where mom could buy a new radio as well as a pack of socks! Ah well, times change. “C’est la vie!” I’ll always remember those times fondly, though. They kinda’ bring tears of happiness to my eyes. Thanks for the post, Rhetty! 😐🙂

🛑🛑 Gee Bees was a store that I fondly remember from living in Johnstown PA. Gee Bees was owned by Glosser Brothers, and was like Walmart of today; with clothing, toys, sporting goods, houseware, electronics and groceries. They even had a conveyor belt for grocery pickup, that carried the groceries outside to awaiting cars; making loading easier. It was Walmart, BEFORE Walmart. 😀👍💯

I imagine that most people have a distinct, childhood memory of a corner market, bodega, or liquor store that was privately owned by some older war veteran and as a kid they'd often go in there to buy candy or get sent there to pick something up for their mom or dad, and then gradually as you grow up you forget about it, but now many years latee you feel sad because you know that the owner must long since be passed away and that old store is like a check cashing joint or smoke shop now.

We had a local grocer, and Mom would get part of her groceries there and part at the other one. I loved going to the first one. They let me go behind their counter and I’d play with their adding machine. Mom used to tell me to get out from back there and they’d tell her to leave me alone. At that time, Wonder bread would give tiny little loaves of bread as a promo to their retailers, and these were often given to me. Eula called me Doll Baby. Thanks for helping me to remember a precious memory!

In the 80's I had moved to the Carolina's and in this town they totally covered downtown mainstreet with a rooftop, converting it into a mall. One of the anchor stores was McCrory's. I loved going there bcuz it was like stepping back into the 1940's. They still had an operational soda shop and restaurant grill, that served burgers and plate lunches. I went there frequently on my lunch break as the prices couldn't be beat. One of the downtown office buildings still had the old timey elevator, complete with an elevator operator to run it. When you entered, you told him what floor you were going to, he closed the gate then the sliding elevator doors , locked them and up you went. It was cool, and I'm glad my daughter and I got to experience it.

Not sure how big they were overall but growing up Gibson's had 4 big stores in Lawton Oklahoma. They've been gone for decades. Far more recently there was Alco. Alco was a department type store that operated in markets too small for Walmart. They shut down due to mismanagement and increased pressures from dollar stores taking their market share.

I (sadly) have to say that these things are never coming back. Like the album, manually changing channels, & stereo systems, their time is over (too much time/effort & society’s ALWAYS in a hurry for some reason). MAYBE we’ll see live bank tellers reappear, but that’s not a wise bet, either. Fortunately, WE’LL always have our memories of shopping at these stores! 👍😊🩷

One store I have fond childhood memories of are the old Rexall Drug stores. As I recall, they had a surprising variety of different items & merchandise, at fairly good prices, and just generally had a nice, relaxed, friendly atmosphere to the place. Plus, it was were some of my earliest comic-book purchases were made there. So I look back fondly upon them overall. I also remember a store in my area called Gemco. I don't know if they were a nationwide chain or not (or if they were, how large they were.) I just remember you had to have a membership card to get in, which you had to flash upon entry, otherwise they wouldn't let you in. After that however, they had a pretty good selection of items, all at very good prices. It was kind of a general medium-sized department-store essentially. We also had a store called White Front, and they had a _huge_ selection of items, everything from books & records to kitchenware to carpets, drapes, automotive. Man, you name it. That was the store were my parents did a lot of their shopping, and while they were doing that I'd be in (where else?) the toy department, after which I'd wander to the books & music dept. and just kind of generally migrate & drift around without getting lost. (In hindsight, it was a more innocent time I guess.)

Rexall ... nothing special about the stores themselves, but I remember when someone explained the name was from "Rx", the abbreviation for Prescription in Latin used by doctors ... or something. I liked the name, mostly, because you could lean into the Rexxxxall.

I do genealogy. A few years ago I was excited when I found a distant cousin's obituary. He was actually the last CEO and president of Rexall Drugs and saw it through its bankruptcy. Rexall was killed by Walgreens, CVS, and the other giant chains. Rexall was just a loose association of small, independently owned drugstores. It never was a huge mega chain. My distant cousin owned a couple of small drugstores in rural northern Iowa.

Growing up in the San Diego area, my Mom loved Walker Scott’s. I remember two things about the store, my Mom would invariably ask me to hold her purse (oh it just mortified me to do it) and the store had a unique method to page employees to either help a customer or answer a phone by sending a series pings or short and rapid tones over the store’s PA system. From there we’d head to deFalco’s, a grocery store that I think Von’s took over long before Safeway took over Von’s! After we moved to the Portland area, Mom shopped at Meier & Frank’s which Macy’s later bought out and put their name onto.

Does anyone remember Highland Appliance? Not sure if it was just in Texas, but I remember the quirky commercials: One was a child practicing piano (Fur Elise), and his friend came to the window and wanted him to come outside, so he recorded himself playing so he could sneak out the window. The other was on a Russian submarine and they were excited about the new stereo system saying "50 watts....woooaah." 😂😂

Sprouse-Reitz was one of my favorites, when I and my mom visited Coolidge, Arizona. T.G.&Y was another favorite store, when I moved to Casa Grande, Arizona in 1989. I also got to shop at Kmart in Casa Grande, Arizona, in 1985. I came from Anchorage, Alaska at the time ⏲️ to visit my mother 👩. Sadly 😥, these stores disappeared over time. I REALLY liked Western Auto. My brother and I, would visit ours, located in Glennallen, Alaska, and buy Life Savers, in 1978. Your friend, Jeff.

Ben Franklin was my go to store to buy my model kits when I was a kid. That store had the best selection of Revell and Monogram kits, especially Nascar kits which was all I built. Other stores I miss is Hills dept store, Phar-Mor, Mega-Mart. Western Auto sponsored my favorite Nascar driver for several years and they were the only parts store I would go to because they supported my driver. And he had one of the best looking cars on the track with that paint scheme
