So nice to see you back. Great video. When I’m walking and using my cane, people will often stop talking when I walk past them. This actually happens to me all the time at work. I always tell people that it’s fine for them to talk, that I actually like when they talk, so I can tell where they’re at as I’m walking. I once had a girl jump over my cane as I was walking, instead of just walk around me.

It's very handy at work! I'm a high school teacher and try to avoid being in the halls during passing periods but when I am, the can helps a lot (it's like parting the water, ha!). I don't normally have issues when out in public with my cane, but I'm a very big (taller, stocky build, and unfortunately obese man) and so people tend to watch out. I use a rollerball tip and usually sweep, but when I'm in a busy (but not super noisy) area I use two-point touch and that helps get people clear of my path. I don't have ideas for videos, but I appreciate them every time you send them out! You inspired me to get my white cane, and since then I've had the confidence to try dating (no real traction yet, but I keep trying!), and I"m looking into an online masters in education so I can get that while I teach!

I've had lots of similar experiences to these. The stupid questions always make me laugh and I think it's because I'm used to it. I often find people just freeze directly in front of the cane and wonder why they get a whack on the ankle

Thank you. I mostly go out with my husband and do sighted guide, but the cane is a nice back up just in case I do need to go somewhere alone. Sometimes I use it when I’m out with him if we’re somewhere really crowded because it helps to have people get out of my way and take some of the pressure off of my husband

My most awkward cane moment: I was at universal Studios in Orlando with my wife and son. We were in the Harry Potter area and I was using my cane. Two ladies had stopped in front of me and were taking a selfie together. I did not see them. My cane went between one ladies legs, lifting up her dress in a crowded park! I apologized profusely and they just laughed about it, but I was very embarrassed. .

Lol that’s a good one. That actually reminds me of a cane story when I was also at the wizarding World of Harry Potter. I was using my cane and my husband was helping guide me and a man came up to him and asked if I was his daughter. My husband and I are roughly the same age, but I guess he saw that he was helping me and just assumed it was in a parental role. It was strange

This was an amazing idea and love the video! Throughout high school, the reaction of the other students when they saw my cane was the funniest thing ever. I know for my other fellow visually impaired/blind individuals didn’t take it as I did and their feelings were hurt. But the moment another student saw the cane they started shrieking and hopping around like they just saw some sort of bug or snake. They were just trying to get out of the way. 🤣 my other story that I could remember was back in middle school when I was going toward my PE class and of course, I didn’t realize that there was a student sitting right in the smack middle of the walkway. All I remember was my best friend and a group of other students laughing hysterically. I thought my cane got stuck in a crack on the floor and I was trying to lift it and move it but it was not moving. I don’t know how the student did not feel my cane down his pants but it was. Apparently, he was tying his shoes and my cane slipped right into his pants! Embarrassing for both of us but after the fact, it was hilarious!

This is a great video. I am a white cane user myself and can definitely relate to getting jabbed in the stomach, my fingers and clothing getting caught in my cane when unfolding it, etc. Also, one time when I was walking down the hallway at school, my cane got caught in the strap of a backpack that was on the floor. I tried to walk and my cane proceeded to drag the backpack down the hall. Lol. It was embarrassing and funny at the same time. But probably the most awkward thing that I experienced so far was when I was navigating the dressing room in a mall. My cane went underneath a door and in between a woman's feet. Lol. I was so embarrassed.

Great video, thanks for sharing. I’m Legally blind and have extreme light sensitivity, So when I am out I have a white cane and very dark large sunglasses. I was at the mall after having lunch with a friend waiting for my buss, When three guys surrounded me asking if they could pray to heal me. I said no and it made me super uncomfortable to be suddenly surrounded by these guys. Ive also had someone in the street grab my arm wanting to pray for me. Im fine, don’t need prayer, and really don’t like random strangers doing all that with no warning. However most people are pretty good. Ive had strangers help me cross a crazy street, give directions, just say hi. Your channel is so helpful Cayla. Thanks!!

Tim, I get this praying activity a lot. I’m also uncomfortable with people deciding my method of approaching god, without my consent. It comes off more like a forced situation. Though, some do it with my consent and nicely.
@Positivekitten

My reply to people wanting to pray for me is usually something like “I’m good, but would you please pray for the ignorant people who discriminate against us, deny us jobs, Think that all we are worthy of is pity and refuse to believe that we are capable human beings who can lead happy, successful and fulfilling lives? If anyone needs prayer, it’s them”.
@DogfatherTim

@@Positivekitten I agree, but with one addition. When I was a child, I was hospitalized for a week. Across the hall from me, another child had suffered burns over his body. He moaned, cried and screamed all night long. If anyone needs prayer, it is those like him, in pain always.

Every point you made was completely on the mark! I work out at the gym several days a week and many gym folks jump over my cane, don’t move out of my way, stop talking, when I approach, let me get to close to them, when I’m searching for a open machine and get overly excited about praising me as an inspiration. Just trying to live my best life and be left alone. Great vid!

Thank you so much I was feeling a little bit sad and checked out your video today and it made me laugh. My favorite comment is that is a kitty litter question what’s that that’s when somebody sees a kitty litter box and says do you have a cat? Yes I’ve experienced practically everything you mentioned It’s amazing how people seem to be totally unaware of what a cane is and what you’re doing the lack of talking is amazing to me the one thing that does bother me is if somebody’s helping me and they kind of talk loudly to me and say watch out for that person over there or you need to get out of the way of a person coming towards us why is the person coming towards us not giving me a break I have a hard time telling people that are helping me that sometimes they are over helping me if that makes sense I’m glad to see your back on KZbin I guess that’s upon of sorts and will look forward to reading the other peoples comments. Nice to see you again Cayla. That’s a bummer about your pink cane since I think you had mentioned it and shown it in a couple of older videos. About the incident with the cane segments. Was that cane graphite or aluminum? Just asking since I recently had to use an aluminum cane as a replacement, and yeah it was like waving around a tree trunk after a few minutes, but I noticed that if I ever got my hand caught in between the segments it would likely hurt a lot more than my graphite cane. I recently got back from visiting New York for the first time and an Uber driver decided it was a good idea to grab my cane to lead me to his car. That was uncomfortable and my gf jumped in and told him not to do that. Another time (also in NY) a random person decided to grab the bottom segment of my cane since he thought it was safe for me to cross the street. Meanwhile I’m trying to count how many cycles it would take to safely cross, and yeah it was a bit scary there too since it’s such an uncomfortable feeling when someone decides to grab your cane without warning.

Hey Juan! Yeah that pink cane has been featured in a few of my videos, one of them being my video on using a white cane which is my most viewed video, so I guess you could say that cane was a bit of a celebrity lol. Hi I’m new to your channel and I can definitely relate to your first Caine story might I suggest a rolling ball tip for your canes I am also legally blind and I have had that incident where canes I have had in the past get stuck in cracks a lot as well. But my one recommendation is rolling ball tips for your white cane do definitely help you can use them on rough surfaces they glide over cracks they glide over sand really well they can even glide over gravel in the street and grass on the sidewalk so that’s just my one recommendation hth

I went to meet some of my favorite football athletes. One of them was Terry Bradshaw. I was waiting in line for a photo-op with him and when it was my turn I walked up to him with my cane. The staff in the area offered to hold it while I took my picture. I take my picture and Terry turns and with in tense wonder asks, “what’s the stick for?!” I couldn’t help but laugh and said it was my cane and it helps me walk so I don’t walk into obstacles like people or objects. He was like woah thats cool and then I got hurried away so he could do his next photo-op. Definitely one of the funnier white cane inquiries.

I thought people moving 12 ft away was because of the real plague going around since I only started using a cane in 2021. I never realized this was a common reaction. I did walk past a group of teens waiting on their school bus and they all stopped talking. I could smell their laundry detergent and saw body movements as I was walking towards them but it was like they thought I was a Dino from Jurassic Park that couldn’t see them if they were quiet and held really still. Then they started giggling as soon as I was past them. Humans are really bizarre.

If you come back to making videos, I would looove to hear of your babyhood-childhood, how your parents managed, how your movement as a baby developed, what kind of early intervention you got. :) My kid seems to only have light perception, and only in one eye, and she is only 7 months old.

Hi, I just discovered this channel a couple of days ago. I also have retinitis pigmentosis. However I can still see fairly well. Please excuse my ignorance but I have some questions for you. I grew up in a very conservative Christian environment and never had the opportunity to pursue a college degree. My dream is to study to become an attorney or finance and investing. But is this possible for me especially since a lot of that is on a computer or there are lots of paperwork to review. I don't even really know how to get into a college or if they have equipment or services available to assist me in a career like this I just turned 29 so if I want to try it I would like to start soon. Anyways thank you very much for your openness it is so refreshing to hear from someone else who faces so many of the difficulties that I do God bless and thank you in advance for any advice or suggestions

This is a funny story. So I had just made a new friend and we went for walks a lot and to keep practising I would use my cane and as canes get stuck in cracks. My cane got stuck and hit me in the side very painfully and he was like “are you okay?” And I said I just stabbed my ovary and we both started laughing so hard! There is a kind story too. I think it was the same day two friends were talking and we were approaching then and one of them just motioned the other person to move out of my way(they weren’t facing me directly) without making it awkward or stopping the conversation which was super sweet🤍

I would love a website that explains what’s happening during the commercials sometimes I have to ask my relatives what the commercial is about there was one about a talking dog that I quite didn’t get and another one that referred back to karate kid that I didn’t get so I think that you could make a living if you just took regular commercials and told people what they were about or what the product they were trying to sell or my favorite is they put a coupon code on the screen and they don’t say it because they’re using the commercial 1000 times so I understand exactly what you’re talking about have a great day I’ll be seeing you :-)
