John Sebastian, one of our national treasures. Warmth, wit and kindness. From "Six O'Clock" Lovin Spoonful days, he has been an icon of our generation for me i idealism and sentiment!

Great song and I love Sebastian but Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers version really nailed it.

Finally found this. all these years, more than I can remember, when I first heard it on radio, it was this sweet sound that's stayed with me,the nostalgic longing tone, and yet when I look for it I get Jimmy Buffet, which is terrific, but I'm always surprised it' doesn't contain the moodiness that first struck me. And now I reallze was John Sebastian I initially heard. And this is what i hope to evoke when i finally learn to play it. And I'm working on it.

It was probably the Everly Brothers version which was the first one, it was the title tune of their 1972 album, the song was written by him for them.

BJ Thomas has the best version. I’ve heard them all and BJ knocks it out of the park.

John Sebastian's version is a cover of his own song actually, it was written for the Everly Brothers by him for their 1972 Stories We Could Tell album, he played on the album and I believe it was recorded at his house. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stories_We_Could_Tell

+Ron Cramer Wrong, John Sebastian wrote it. The Everly Brothers covered it on their country album.
