Been collecting for 10 years over 500 game the works. Thought I would share some of my tips. 1. Get a dehumidifier if you have a decent sized collection. Helps with dust a smidge but more importantly keeping the moisture from the games/dvds/book whatever. 2. Don’t be intimidated by a DIY shelf. Sometimes two target shelves can make the perfect shelf. (If u have the space 3. Keep away from the sun. Last thing collect what’s important to you and have fun

I know some people smoke (me included oops) either vape or weed in the same room as their old cases and let me say, that plastic loves to absorb the stickiness and accumulate more dust and bad smells! A really good way to clean them up simple and cheap is just isopropyl alcohol from dollar tree. You cant use any dust removers or windex on the cases but you can use the alcohol on the case no problem with no residue or smells left over.

You are probably the first librarian I have noticed caring about video game preservation. It is really unfortunate that modern consoles barely have a disk drive anymore. I'm glad all Switches have a cartridge slot, but what about the Switch's successor? In general, preserving today's games is possibly very difficult due to it all being digital now. I am very glad I have built in the optical drive from an old, malfunctioning ThinkCentre into my HP Z240 to play physical media on there, as well as having a Windows 7 PC for older PC games which either don't work on Windows 11 or I put on there to save space on my main machine. I had some crazy reasons to get the older consoles I've bought, but it all leads to me getting to play video games the industry doesn't want me to play (anymore). Of course, preserving video games is a tedious task on its own, but we can (and should) do it. I have heard some good stuff about Terranigma on the SNES for example, but I probably will never be able to play the game in question because neither my parents nor anyone else was capable of making it possible (legally). And it's not only us who should be able to play those video games, but also the future generations to come. You also can't really play Minecraft Story Mode anymore and some fans are trying to revive The Crew which Ubisoft shut down back in early 2024. Books, audio, video, games, software and even (knowledge about the) hardware of pretty much any kind are all part of our cultures. Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video and share it to the public. It may just be what we need. Tip: If you have any downloaded games on your PS3 via the PlayStation Store, do NOT do anything which makes you lose the data, including formatting the system, swapping the hard drive, deleting any games, save files or users, selling it or throwing it into the trash (if you do have to throw it into the trash because it's severely malfunctioning, please recycle it responsibly). Preserving your console for as long as possible somewhat helps us preserving some of the digital games. If anyone working at Sony reads this: Please keep those games playable and remove the internet time check requirement before you shut down the servers. If you don't remove those internet time check requirements, we don't want you to shut down the servers.

I'm currently in the process of cleaning and preserving my game collection as well. I recently picked up plastic clamshell cases for all of my loose cartridges so I can store them with their manuals. I enjoyed this as a cozy, comforting collection-maintenance video with a ton of good tips -- well-said and well-done! Related to your anecdote about rebuying "Fable III", I did the same thing more times than I like to admit till I got organized. Something I would recommend to anyone with a sizable collection of physical media is to create yourself an online-accessible spreadsheet to keep track of what you already own. For me, I use Google Sheets, which is free and very similar to Microsoft Excel. I have my game collection broken down by one console per tab, with the name, whether it's a game only or a game with case, and any notes I want to add. You can sort it alphabetically on the fly whenever you add new titles, and if you're out and about looking at video games and can't remember if you already have something, all you have to do is pull the Google Sheet up on your phone to take a quick look. It's something you have to be thoughtful about maintaining as you add new stuff, but I loved it so well as an organizing "index" that I later did the same thing for several other types of collections I pursue.

Discrot isn't in our hands. It just happens Example: around 2001 i bought a terminator 2-disc set (i'm the first owner) and around the same time a bunch of other dvds. they were all stored under the same conditions - terminator is the only problem child... if the manufacturer cheaped out on the wrong end, that problem will come automatically. same with laserdiscs, audio cds and every other disc based medium

@Sin_Alder
@Sin_Alder Ай бұрын
It's kind of true that it's out of our hands, but only in the sense that we can't stop it from happening. We can, however, increase the risk of discrot. Really, our best defense against discrot is avoiding anything that could cause the silver in the disc to oxidize/corrode, ideally get discs that don't use silver to begin with, and cross our fingers. I had a copy of Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness on the Gamecube succumb to discrot less than a decade after the game's release, despite storing it properly. I also have crappy CDs I burned in the 90's that still work. Sometimes it's truly luck of the draw.
@coughyybeans
@coughyybeans Ай бұрын
Some things are out of our hands but there are things we can do to preserve them as best as possible. Even rare books and collections eventually fail despite years of best practices keeping them safe. Ultimately all this stuff is meant to be used and use + time will win. Play your games while they work and you still have ownership of them

3:40 I, TOO, keep the old receipts in the game cases. However, it is not ink that's on those receipts. Rather, that paper is thermal printing paper in which it burns a bit of the chemical on the paper to activate it and make it a shade of whatever color the chemical turns into. So it's not that the ink rubs off, but rather, that the chemical deactivates over time and just kinda disappears :(

For the physical media haters that didn't watch the video, here's my reply that I -wasted so much time on- made to a comment asking in essence "Why bother?" ROMs don't come with the game manual or packaging marketing what the game is. Cataloging and managing a digital collection can be as difficult as a physical one. Some people that experienced the release of the original may feel that having just the ROM and an emulator does not provide the same experience, since it's a sterilized facsimile of the original. The ROM doesn't have the personality or soul of the original physical version. If you play games on Steam, notice how the Library page has changed in recent years to a vertical image format reminiscent of game DVD cases. Valve's trying to recapture the "shelf full of DVDs" experience. In nostalgia, convenience is not king. Myself being a newcomer to the retro games space (I didn't grow up with a Super Nintendo) I'm not going to say ROMs are terrible, or that emulators are inferior. But having a physical artifact does matter. For me, it doesn't even have to be the game. It can be the game manual, a clone of the original game controller, some taste of "as it was." In today's entertainment landscape, so many things compete for our attention, so I don't like to waste time playing games that aren't fun. Going on a cycle of booting up a game, playing it for a few minutes, then switching to the next one on the massive list of "EVERY GAME EVER MADE FOR X CONSOLE" was a problem I had when I first started playing with emulators (not that everyone would do that). So when I'm unfamiliar with the games on a classic game console, I end up looking up review lists online of "The Best 100 games." With physical copies, you don't have to do this. Sure, you might still look at those lists, but that would be to look out for games to check out from the library, or to dig out of a bin at the thrift store. The list isn't as necessary, because a physical game has boxart you can look at. You can judge for yourself whether you think a game is going to be fun for you without reading someone else's opinion. Entertainment doesn't have to be a Spotify playlist.

I personally like digital archives at this point in my life, I travel a lot which means I can still bring my massive library where I go and have the ability to pick whatever I want to play at that time. My collect is MASSIVE, I have over 120TB worth of games on my NAS. Everything from the Magnavox to the PS5 with all the obscure games you've never heard of in between. Another good thing about Digital is the Front-Ends, people have made some very awesome and good looking front ends that makes playing your games a great experience. That is almost every single game in existence complete with Trailers, actual photo copies of the booklets, magazines, music, and so much more with entertainment. It's a massive gaming historical archive in a tiny little box of hard drives. Yeah, not everyone will go as excessive as I did but you can still build a VERY nice collection with a 2-5TB HDD. Just put only the games you enjoy and might want to play, fix it up with all the extra goodies and your good to go. Personally, I find entertainment in collecting and building my massive project. Almost more fun than playing the actual games honestly. Don't get me wrong, physical is a good way to collect but sometimes, you just can't get things anymore and a lot of things were never made available to the public, but you can find them on emulators. I should add, I am only 28 so I lived during the physical age into the digital age, been playing games since day one.

The advice I'm about to give might horrify extremely particular collectors out there, but unless you're dealing with some crazy-rare $1,000 game, I find Q-tips and rubbing alcohol do a marvelous job for de-gunking dusty cartridge pins and getting them back to shiny and playable shape. Just be sure that once you've got them clean, you store them somewhere where it won't be a constant problem. If you're nervous about the stringency of rubbing alcohol, glasses cleaner fluid is also a good substitute -- has a lower alcohol percentage, but enough that it will dry fairly quickly. What you definitely don't want to use is straight water due to the possibility of corrosion, and you also want to be sure it is very good and dry before you pop it in your console. Wet pins and electronics are not a good mix!

I also kept all my receipts in the box. Personally I wouldn't store them in one of those containers; I had bought a cloth-lined cubby box a few years back and the cloth started to rot and decay within just two years. Maybe I just bought a bad cheap one; maybe I had exposed it to some chemical that did it in, but regardless of the reason cloth just doesn't last as long as other options. It really isn't much better than a cardboard box.

About the thermal receipt paper going blank, it's hardly archival so will likely just go blank after a while. Also solvents like IPA will make them (or some? most?) go blank. Wasn't at all used to reprint bus tickets by someone else i didn't know.... Although think that was discovered with lynx/axe.

Don't worry about the ink on receipts rubbing off, it's not ink at all. It's a chemical reaction inside the receipt paper when exposed to a laser that blackens it. It just fades over time. But that also means, if you want to keep receipts, scan them!

I've heard GameCube discs are particularly prone to disc rot, so during lockdown I got into Wii homebrew and copied all my Wii and GC games onto a HDD, so all those physical games are now in zipped storage under the bed, and I don't need to take out the discs to play my games.

Ooo, this is very helpful. I was born in 2000, so my game collection is as big as others. I have a few N64 games, Wii, WiiU, DS, 3DS, Switch, PSP, PS3, PS4, and PS5. So…my collection is decently sized, but not like a large library like other gaming collectors have.

Yeah dust, humidity or sunlight can be real problems too. I only collect loose cartridges and store them into my drawer whenever i want to play some N64. But i really appreciate your way to store CD based Games and i think i should do that too Here is my secret trick for Consoles: If they are not in Use i just plug them off their power supply and throw a towel or something similar over them in order to keep them dust free. other systems i dont currently use are stored in sepparated Shopping Bags inside a Treasure chest.

Blu Rays are very durable, btw. You would have to go out of your way to destroy them vs DVDs and CDs with how they're made. However because the data on a blu ray is so much closer together, a single scratch would likely damage the whole thing.

I only started with any of this stuff about last year, and only have a Pokémon Moon case and a recently acquired (seeming partially chewed up) Poptropica Adventures case (both with games). And then some ones that are just cartridges due to either the case being lost years ago (Pokémon White 2 from my older brother) or because I’m cheap and don’t have too much money for luxury stuff. And all I have to play that stuff on is emulators on my PC and a New 3DS XL. Still need a better place for storage. But I did recently empty a small chest that should be able to properly hold most if not all of my small collection. With some padding. Kinda sucks that a plenty of things relating to retro games and console gaming in general are really expensive since I’m so late to the game and don’t yet know anybody else interested in this stuff in a similar enough way to me

Receipts are typically thermal printed. no "ink" involved. And as the "thermal" part might suggest. They are among other things temperature sensitive. And are generally not meant for lasting long. Thermal printers are nice for their low maintenance and therefore cheap operation in high throughput applications. Not to produce prints that last long. If you want to preserve those you should really scan them.

Ohh this is actually really helpful, I've been wondering how to store some of my older games (which have been downsized over the last few years). Most of my Wii(+U) collection is just in a bag in my closet which I need to figure out. I do have my 3/ds and some playstation games in an open shelf children's night-stand (repurposed as a pc stand). But I keep the discs/cartridges separately in a disc folder and an old 3ds protective case. I don't know how good the protective case is though since most of the cartridges are just kept loose and I have quite a lot of 3/ds games.

03:45 Fun Fact: The "Ink" on receipt paper isn't actually ink! The receipt printer heats up the paper which is specially made to react to the heat by making a non-burning semi-permanent mark. So I'm not sure why the text was "rubbing off", really. It could be that over time the paper just "repairs" itself? Or maybe the top layer is just coming off. Not sure, honestly, I've never had to think about them being stored like that.

You might be able to find bags for the boxes of gba games, yeah it isn't as good as a plastic box but is way less cheaper and it can protect it against scratches and the dust will be easier to clean than in cardboard Also i think your snes is slightly yellow, as i see you like to keep your things clean you could try peroxide hydrogen to clean the shell (it's enough to slightly cover it with the same "cream like" peroxide people use to dye hair and cover it with film and leaving it in UV light for a day)
