Save Kitchen Scraps and Leaves for next spring, all that will turn into soil, store it for the Winter. No compost Piles for me, just dump and plant, that is my way, and is easy and the plants love it.
The bathtub is now being moved, to a new home and new use in the garden.

My friend bought me a tray of collards so now that my tomatoes froze to death, I'm going to repot my little collards and put them in my 3 totes. First I'll solder holes in my pitchers. And the new totes I ordered (8) will hold my 6 big bags of leaves with kitchen scraps in between. Your ideas have been a get well gift to me. Thank you.

Good video. I so religiously keep kitchen scraps. They are like gold for me. Our veg garden is 3 hours away at a property we will soon retire to and I keep every little bit in plastic store roofing nail bins that have hinged lids. They are square and stack nicely until I am ready to take them to the garden. Every time we go to the property we travel with our kitchen scraps LOL. I am so protective of this material you’d think I had a load of gold. In a way it is I guess. The compost is great. Im so excited to finally move to this rural location where nosy neighbors wont have to see me dumping out my scraps in the buckets and open compost pile!! I cant wait to start mini gardens in totes within my fenced garden plot!!

I heard on you tube where we should not compost non organic banana peels because the pesticide residue is so strong on them that it kills worms in the compost. I noticed in the bins where I had non organic banana there were far less worms and almost none. So I only buy organic bananas now. I need my worms to be healthy little workers LOL! The field workers get sprayed with all the nasty pesticides anyway while harvesting the bananas and they get sick from them so now I stay away from nonorganic bananas. Have you heard of this? I did see a video showing the workers and it was sad.

Way back when I was in college, I was with a group that met with some on-the-ground agriculture and poverty advocates in Central America, and they told us that the single most effective thing Americans could do to address quality of life issues for the population there was to refuse to buy pesticide-sprayed bananas. They begged us to promise to only buy organic bananas and I have kept that promise for more than thirty years now. The difference in price is rarely more than 10-15 cents a bunch for us. But even if we had to pay double it would be one of the cheapest foods out there.

Hi Robbie. I am watching your video again because I am learning. And I thank you so very much for teaching us all with your videos. I’m looking for guidance since I have never composted and live in a new home, so I don’t have a garden yet. From watching your videos and corresponding with you, I decided to take one of my totes and made holes in the bottom and sides. I placed it on my deck, which gets sun though all day, and collected acorn, twigs, paper matter, kitchen scraps. I don’t water it because it’s winter and with the tote not being on the ground, the water would disperse on the bottom and sides. So I’m doing this to not waste all my food scraps and to make good soil for my plants come spring and summer. I sprinkle dollar store soiling top to stop the smell ( next year I will have a bucket of native instead). When my tote is full, because of all the holes I made, I will most likely move it to the ground next to the area I plan on growing vegetables. I don’t think I will have soil from that tote to use though. If I don’t plant on top of it, how long will it take until It becomes soil? Also, When I move the tote onto the ground, should I be watering it daily or every few days unless it rains? This is new for me, and I’m learning. I know as a year goes by I will see how things work with it all and according to what I do in my yard. I just don’t want to looses this batch of scraps I’ve been collecting. I’m also wondering if I really needed to put all those holes on the bottom and side. We’ll see.

Your comment about the stickers made me laugh!!!! You are 100% correct!!!! I do vermiculture composting and my fruits or vegetable peelings with those darn stickers are still there after everything else has broken down to useable compost, which is usually 3 months or more. I have a question for you. I've been saving all the plant matter in my garden but I have hesitated to keep anything that looks like diseased leaves or vines - like rust spot leaves from roses, or tomatoes that have blossom end rot, anything where the plant did not thrive and might have had a problem. Won't I be spreading disease if I keep these for the compost in place process? I keep everything else, kitchen scraps, my neighbor's grass cuttings and leaves - even weeds-- that doesn't bother me but I worry about anything that might have been diseased. I've read that the hot compost methods kill off the disease but this is cold compost. . . what do you do about that?

I tend to think that anything that won’t break down is not good for you to ingest, like McDonald’s french fries, when left alone, look the same as when you bought them because chemicals prevent them from degrading, which means they are not biodegradable. A lot of what manufacture say is marketing unfortunately. The proof is in the pudding. You can tell if your olive oil is the real stuff by sticking a little dish of it in the refrigerator. If it gets cloudy and thick, it’s the real stuff. If it doesn’t look any different, it’s synthetic. Fake.

I started a large open compose pile as well as one wheel barrow and one bin. Also I have a couple of totes around gathering water to add and placing items in around from around the yard, (tree branches, trimmings, etc. Last year, I noticed several feral cats and for the first time a raccoon and possum in my back yard. Scary! I have planted an herb garden and some fruit and berry shrubs and trees as well as some flowers. I haven't really started back working on the main veggie garden in a while because of destructive neighbors. Chances are I'll do something this year. Do you have any problems with unwanted visitors, two legged or four legged; especially the 4 legged? If so any suggestions? I have used amonnia, mint, white vinegar and coyote urine. Doesn't seem to work on feral cats or squirrels but haven't seen the possum or raccoon since. Although the feral cat I recently adopted or who recently adopted me could have actually gotten his point across. 😊

I would not add, let's say, oil or grease in large amounts to a compost pile to plant in; if you are tossing old greasy foods, that would be fine, I do it and it all breaks down, but if I drained something and I ended up with a cup or so, I pack that up and toss in the garbage. But if you are off the grid, you could dig a hole in the ground, a foot or 2, dump it in and bury it. Thanks, Robbie

Put a weighty pot with a plant on it, get a larger patio paver to lay over top, or use 1/4" hardware cloth hinged with zip ties and/or clipped with caribiners.

I am from Montreal, Quebec so snow +++ and frost +++. So, there is no problem if my kitchen scraps freeze, it’s still good to use with my plants in spring??

I want to start adding my food scraps. We eat dinner at family's house often. If I ask the gang to scrape the leftovers in a bin at the end of dinner and some of the food is processed, do I have to worry about the food additives or chemicals?

I don’t think kitchen scraps means leftover cooked foods. I think it’s just your vegetable peelings etc. There may be oils and fats in dinner scraps and they don’t compost, they rot and attract rats and vermin. Good luck!

I've got a question. The back of my apartment where I've been container growing gets the morning and mid day sun so can't grow full sun veggies. Does it takes LED lights to get a harvest? It's cold till mid April. Any suggestions?
@beccagee5905
@beccagee5905 2 жыл бұрын
For plants that take longer to harvest, you can start seeds early under a grow light inside. After last hard frost, you can plant outside. Cut off the bottom of a 2 liter plastic bottle (clear color), leave cap off, cover top with packing tape and poke a small hole in the tape. Place the 2 liter bottle over your young plant. It will act like a mini greenhouse retaining moisture and warming up the inside. Bonus the plastic bottles can be used for a purpose, instead of being thrown away.
