The combination of weird angles creates the illusion of curves in this quilt. The square on point, diamond and square in a square are the only units needed to make the quilt.

If you cannot find templates, there are some other good options. To make different sized Peaky and Spike if templates are sold out, you have a couple of options. Deb Tucker's V Block, Darlene Zimmerman's Tri-Recs tool. I actually have both. You could opt for making a Diamond Rectangle (Deb Tucker, Studio 180), which is one diamond with 4 sides. The center seam is omitted which provides a more attractive presentation for some prints. Studio 180 also has squared squared options. FPP also works well. I find glue basting to be very useful in blocks such as these. (But not if you press seams open, which I do not).

wondering why you press the seams open and not towards the darker fabric like other quilts?

It takes extra time but, whenever possible I press seams open to make the quilt lay flatter.
