Amazing the hysteria we now have with every bit of weather. I live in Angus in the heart of the worst of this storm and it was exactly what we get at this time of year EVERY YEAR. I've even gone fishing for winter cod in only slightly better conditions. Everybody needs to calm the hell down and stop this constant over-reaction to normal conditions. Nice waves in you vid though, thanks for sharing.

I agree completely. However, I'm wondering if you or any other viewers heard the weird sound that sounded like a 1970s cartoon bulldog biting a cartoon cat or humans butt? Check out 0:14 0:38 1:02 1:26 1:50 and it continues throughout. I love the video but found the sound almost as distracting as the elements you refer too, such as silly music.

I've always admired the design of Whitby harbour. The energy of the waves is dissipated by the widening outer part, then energy is lost over those spillways. Further dissipation follows. The Severn Estuary is an illustration of the opposite effect.
@etarepsedllits4811 ай бұрын
Whitby is, afaik, the only north-facing harbour along the Yorkshire coast, so the defences had to be effective. Having sailed in and out many times, I realised quickly that the outer harbour was similar to a washing machine.

Absolutely amazing! For people who know Whitby, it's so incredible to see the size of the swell and the reach of the surf around the walkways. I found the pop-ups incredibly irritating, though; they take you right out of the stormy atmosphere.
@robertsigsworth822911 ай бұрын
unlike most of England east coast facing east, Whitby faces North, so as soon as the wind changed from E. to N.E. there is no barrier of land down the north sea, and a mile off shore waves can reach 12 to 15 Meters, and can still be over 7 M when they get to the scar & upgang rocks.

To us this looks fierce but by comparison to my late fathers RN Destroyers journeys in WW2 on Arctic Convoys from UK to Murmansk in Russia, this looks like a mild breeze. Then in February 1944, he was just 19…they were torpedoed twice in minutes, the freezing water minus 42 degrees. Waves lashing above 50 feet with 236 men + only 17 survivors, my Dad was one of them, an exceptionally strong swimmer. Yes these men lived but their lives were never again as they once knew from horrendous injuries. Climate Change is a massive concern but living in peacetime as we are now, as an old lady, Babet I can cope with!
@lisablake373311 ай бұрын
I'd like to hear more of your dad's story. He and the others who survived swam to shore? I'm upset at all the stories disappearing. My older brother died in July and I never got his Vietnam stories out of him. He saw alot of action, and was hit by a North Vietnamese grenade.
@michaelyates597611 ай бұрын
My dad did one trip to Murmansk part of the Arctic Convoy. The crew had to stay there for 2 months before they could return. Fortunately his ship got there and back without incident. Very many weren't so fortunate.

This weather isn't at all unknown around the coast. Mind, it is beautiful. One of the most astounding sights my husband and I saw was at the raised car park at Medmerry Beach in Selsey, one dark late evening in West Sussex about 25 years ago. We saw two separate thunder storms with fork lightning quite some miles apart. They travelled towards each other over about fifteen minutes, met, both striking lightning as they crossed over each others paths. It was really spectacular and I doubt I shall ever again see anything as like that.
