🎉I too, had damage to my vegetable garden, layed things over.. But, I have found that, given time, the Sun will help most of these things to stand back up. I live in a mobile home and have to be watchful of 4 huge pine trees very close to my house. They are very tall and all lean in 😮different directions, one leans toward my house 😮. I even had to get out of my house for a little while, trying to keep my chin up. I was scared. But, no tornados, no trees fell. I'm glad to be alive for another day and still have a roof over my head. As Amanda had said before, gardening is hard work and I feel for Amanda, I'm sorry. It will get better. The sun will help some of your plants pop back up. 😊

Sadness and disappointment are completely understandable, Amanda, so absolutely no need to apologize. You've poured yourself into making your fabulous gardens a showplace. All of your efforts to recover will be worth it. Your example of pushing through this chaos is so😊 helpful to so many who also are experiencing great losses due to inclement weather. No one could have predicted how wild and devastating the weather has been lately. Thank you for being so brave and sharing your frustrations and even uncertainties. Your courage certainly is very encouraging and contagious! In Houston we've been digging out of tons of huge fallen trees and smashed up landscapes, too! I know your yard will be better than ever before you know it!! Linda 💚💚

It's totally ok to be sad/disappointed when things like this happen. We can be sad and grateful at the same time. Nature is resilient. I learned that last year when we had an epic hail storm. Some of my plants that got totally shredded came back better and fuller than before. We shall miss the redbud, but I kinda can't wait to see what you put in its place. ❤🍀

I would! We lost a lovely little redbud in a storm a few years back. A year or two later, I cleared out some overgrown feather grass about 8 or 10 feet from the original redbud and found a sapling that had sprung from the root remnants. It was too close to the corner of the sidewalk and driveway to stay there, so we dug it out and replanted it where the original had been. It began growing beautifully until rabbits chewed it down. We treated it with rabbit deterrent, and it regrew again until we missed an application after a rain and the rabbits got it again clear down to the ground with no trace of life or vegetation at all. We thought it was gone for sure, but this spring it sprouted up again as a vigorous multi-trunk sapling, so we put a tall metal tower over it and wrapped the bottom 20" or so in chicken wire to keep rabbits out. It's grown almost 30" this year so far because its roots are already so mature. I am glad we saved it! I'm not sure, but I have read that weeping redbuds are grown as grafts onto regular (Eastern?) redbud rootstock, so, IF that's true, growth from below the graft juncture would be regular redbud, which is still nice but maybe not what you want. It would look great by your willow, though.

Glad you and your family/pets are ok and we all know that is the most important. Sad about your redbud but like your attitude about a new planting opportunity! Sure after a couple days most will bounce back. Have had a lot of destruction in my yard in the past with storms and very disheartening after all the hard work and sweat we put into our gardens. This video has also made me think i need to invest in some peony supports;-)

I'm sorry your garden suffered a lot of damage. So disappointing and it is a lot of work to fix never mind the expense if you have to buy new plants. For the smoke bush, I would suggest pushing it upright again, staking it, and trimming some of the leaves/branches. The roots on the low side are probably fine and the pulled roots should be able to heal. You could give it a high P transplanting fertilizer to stimulate root growth. Stay safe.

Mother Nature sure has a way to keep us humble! I can empathize with your disappointment. I have such an obsession with drooping plants, that many, and I do mean many, of my plants are staked or supported in some way. Yes, don't be too concerned with those plant stakes linking and creating a circle. I just jam them in so the plant stands up. I've been known to use 3 or 4 around a larger plant. I'm at the point where I put the supports in before the plants needed them I hate drooping plants that much. I usually put 3-5 pole-type supports around my hibiscus and tie twine around each pole to create a cage. They easily grow taller than the supports, so the supports get covered. To be honest though, I have no idea if they would all survive 70 mile winds or would they snap at the points of the twine. Also, I stake or corral my lilies. Year 2 and 3 they just seem to get so much taller. It looks like you made a lot of progress on clean-up day one. Keep up the good work!

I would just stake the smoke bush and make sure to cut off that tag before it starts girdling the trunk. Just firm up the soil around the root ball and stake it up for a few months (up to a year). It can’t hurt. I would wait to prune it until you see if staking helps.

Evidently the 70 mph storm that went through your area made it all the way to Houston yesterday afternoon with the same high wind/rain and hail intensity. I'm amazed to see tree leaves plastered to my front door. Fortunately my garden area is on the south side and somewhat protected. I did notice how flattened things looked and of course broken but overall ok just a mess. On your smoke tree, I think I would have considered taking off some of the back tall growth in case another freak wind comes at it from behind and yes stake support until things dry out and it stabilizes. Thank you for the information about the peony stakes. What size height did you find most usual? I'm thinking at least 16 to 24 inches. Living close to the coast my big concern going into hurricane season are those storms. I've been lucky so far but with all the freaky weather we've had over the past 2 years, I'm getting more concerned.

After 2 category 5 hurricanes in a period of 3 weeks many of my trees were slightly uprooted. An old farmer told us to stake them. Put some soil with fertilizer and amendments in the side that is was uprooted. Lay a brick on the uprooted part to help the roots grow down and seek the extra nutrients. In around 3 months they were looking fine again. Hope this help

I am so sorry for the damage to your garden. I can relate. In 2019 tornadoes embedded in Hurricane Dorian ripped through my neighborhood. My shady backyard became instantly full sun because the tornadoes took out all my big old oaks, pines, and maples. Additionally I lost 2/3 of my old hydrangeas and azaleas. My house suffered minor damage, which we were able to get repaired pretty quickly. I still grieve the loss of those trees. It took months to get things cleaned up and presentable. One simply cannot replace a 75 year old oak tree. The yard is totally reconfigured. While things about it are pretty, my backyard is too HOT to enjoy at 1:30 on a sunny July day. You just have to keep moving and figure out what lovely plants you can now plant. Good luck as you figure that out. I like that going out for ice cream idea myself.

When I could be able to check my garden, I did stacked my tomatoes, eggplants and sunflowers. I am so sorry about the damage from the storm. We had a lot of damage from first hurricane Irma, then hurricane Ian. We lost five trees in hurricane Ian. The cleanup process can be kind of overwhelming. I guess because I’m a farmer’s wife I take this kind of thing in stride more. Farmers, know they are at the mercy of the weather. Take your time redoing things. This may be an opportunity to do things differently. You might find something new you really like. I have a whole new sun-bed because of all the downed trees. Glad that you , your family and house are ok? I know it's heartbreaking to loose your tree and beautiful flowers . You'll plant more pretty plants and everything's going to look gorgeous. This was my first year planting bachelor buttons and I've already started pulling them. They just don't look good enough for the space they take up.

Oh Amanda I’m so sorry this has happened especially after all the hard work you have done. Very happy you are all ok and also the puppy dogs. You have done so much work to tidy it all up and I think it’s all looking great considering. It is sad and disappointing but you are all ok and that is the main thing. Love and hugs from Perth Australia. 🤗🤗🤗

So sorry for the damage to your beautiful garden but thankfully you and your family and house are all okay. So glad your gorgeous shade garden didn't suffer much damage. Amazing that the shade cloth was pretty much intact with 70mph winds. I admire you getting out there and salvaging what you could. The garden will revive and be as gorgeous as ever.

So sorry Amanda. Glad you’re all safe. -Angle the shade cloth, slightly lower on one side(like a ramp). Rain 🌧️ will move down faster and not pool in the center. I'm so sorry about all the damage to your garden :( It makes me so sad because I know how much work you've put into your garden, not to mention the cost. Just because other people may have lost more, doesn't mean that your loss is not significant. Sometimes it helps to take time to be disappointed before you start cleaning and straightened it all up again. As a fellow gardener, it made me feel so bad for you. I'll be watching to see how beautiful it all comes back soon!! My Best to you!

So glad your family and home are ok. Yes, plants can be replaced but it is still disheartening to lose the ones we love. It is also costly in time and money. We have had a very blustery spring so I haven't planted out most of my warm season plants. Hopefully, this weekend. Hope the plants you are trying to save recover nicely.

Good morning. So sorry about things that are leaning and for losing the golden bush that went for a joy ride to somewhere. Well if it were me, yes I would be sad however I know that most of those plants will a. either put out more flushes of blooms or b. I will have some shrubs that will bloom but look a little lean this season. I have had in the past two seasons where landscapers came in and either killed plants that I had planted for that season or pruned a shrub back that I had already pruned back in the beginning of the growing season. Which made me rather mad and thank goodness they did not talk to me because I would have torn them a new one. So this season my husband and I decided we would look after the garden ourselves and left them a sign to see that they can not come to my garden. Anyways have a calming rest of your day and my fingers are crossed that all will go well with your gardens. No more bad storms either. Take care.

Since I also live in north Texas I am grateful that the fam and pups are ok and that we did not lose electricity. we lost the siding on one side of the house had massive branches from the oak trees come down in the front of the yard and all my sunflowers were touching the ground 😬 however the sunflowers didn’t snap so I was able to tie them up and a huge branch that fell on the patio missed the table and planters so no damage there 😊

Cultivate resilience as well as flowers. My husband and I survived Katrina because we evacuated, but our house could not evacuate and was destroyed. Fortunately we had resources and recovered. Many did not. Depression took as many lives as the storm. It’s hard to adjust to devastation.

You are a trooper- my garden was flattened. Wax Myrtle has broken limbs… bee balm, cornflower. Etc laying down… working on cut backs this weekend (2 storms back to back)😮 you’ve done all the heavy lifting for me- I know how to cut back plants after the storm. I was concerned that I didn’t know exactly what to do. Heading to work and I’ll start the cleanup this evening.
