In Europe Storm Daniel has battered Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria causing landslides and further damage with the deluge. Nine people are confirmed to have died so far. The storm has dumped vast amounts of water on southeastern Europe, with Greece recording the highest level of rainfall since at least 2006. The floods in Greece follow weeks of drought and wildfires. The government says climate change is to blame.

Mayor of Volos, who "urged people to stay inside", did not close the local businesses or the public sector buildings, so employees actually were obligated to go to work despite the extreme weather forecasts.

What can they do? People would revolt if their quality of life is reduced, which is the only realistic way to mitigate human impact, and they would revolt if taxes are hiked to pay for more sustainable means of living. Humans will never voluntarily give anything up to save the environment, even if the world was burning down around them. It's not in our nature or the nature of life in general. We're like the colony of animals kept in a cage that consumes and overpopulates and pollutes its environment until the toxicity causes a total collapse.

This seems to follow the current pattern: First heatwave, then extreme drought, then heavy rains with flashfloods... Air is like a sponge when it is getting warmer, it takes more and more humidity in it and then pours it in one location. You may still have same annual amount of rain, but now the rain comes down in just few storms. There is no mild rain anymore. This is what El Niño brings. More heat, extreme weather and floods. Same in China, Brasil, Greece, Turkey, Florida, ... At the same time... BTW most of western media does not even report Chinese extreme floods in multiple cities... (Partly caused by Chinese governments orders to open damns to protect Beijing and other politically important cities, partly by allowing building in flood planis, ... 300 mm rains...)

and by "wet" in august, you mean that it was also very unseasonably cold (~10° lower than normal) at the same time as a prolonged mediterranean heatwave, and all those global temperature records! there was a stationary boundary between a mediterranean high pressure and a northern european low pressure system hovering around the alps or southern to central germany for I think 5 or 6 weeks! currently here in northern germany, since the heat has begun to return somewhat ~2 weeks ago, I have killed more mosquitos than in the last five years combined. and I don't think they're quite here yet, but I hear germany is currently getting its first ever serious mosquito-born illness, which is the west nile virus hitchhiking on the invasive asian tiger mosquito (also potentially carrying several other human diseases like yellow fever, dengue, and zika).

I'm typically not a governmental apologist, but I don't know if anyone can fairly expect the Greek government to know what to do when they get a year's worth of rain in one day. Unprecedented kind of means unprecedented. They clearly need to add this to the playbook though

Scientists have been warning about events like this for literally decades. This kind of destruction wasn't expected this quickly, but there has been enough time for governments to set up disaster plans. So I think anyone can fairly expect the Greek government to know what to do. The lack of a playbook has been either willful ignorance or negligence.

Considering that the scientists have been warning the world about this since at least the late 1960's, I think that it should be fairly obvious that the world governments decided a long time ago to let this play out. What is happening now was predicted as far back as 1968. That is 55 years ago. But essentially, nothing was done to prevent it. I have heard many explanations for that, from greed to corruption. I think that the reality is that it was recognized that this would take care of the planets most pressing problem, overpopulation. So let the elite get rich while the scourge of humans is reduced to a sustainable billion or so. Buckle up folks, the ride is getting pretty nasty while we encounter this turbulence.

@Ominousheat
@Ominousheat Жыл бұрын
That's not really the truth! California is historically hot and sunny, hot and sunny. Check the records. The humid atmospheric rivers you get now are due purely because of climatic change. It has nothing to do with a lack of adaptation. It's global warming. Fyi. You have a severe problem with water in the western US. The Rocky's snow melt is becoming less and less each year and east-of-the-range aquafers have been completely abused by growing cities like Salt Lake and Las Vegas; so there is no water to manage. Thank you golf course builders and hot tub lovers.

@Ominousheat
@Ominousheat Жыл бұрын
@@haydndoucet4172 Key to what? It's not key to mitigating fossil fuels. And to suggest people everywhere are just going to lie down and let global warming roll over them is patronising. You are trying to argue something that is obviously part of the itinerary of reaction to a looming threat. What is key is the instant dismantling of the petrochemical companies. To make them all state-owned and heavily regulated. To rid us of the greed that capitalism has encouraged. Karl Marx was completely right about capitalism. But the fossil fuel-lobbied right-wing parties of the world have completely sold their soul for what will be a mere temporary enrichment of their lives. All the while telling people not to listen to predictions coming from socialists inferring it a communist conspiracy. The industrial capitalists have achieved the scam of all scams. Never has the Earth ever faced such a cataclysmic threat from the life it has nurtured. They are a virus. And if you do the math you will find that the thermal forcing of anthropogenic GHGs is equal to the energy released from the Chixilub impactor roughly every ten years. You can't hold back that tide of heat just by raising sea walls higher or changing agricultural processes. The only way to stop this madness and have a chance to reverse the damage is to destroy big oil. They are a deadly organisation and need to be stopped at all costs. Or soon there will be no one left to stop them.

Greece is tiny. Greek geography is bad. You build one dam in a valley and suddenly you’ve flooded half of the little amount of flat land in a province. There are almost no major rivers to speak of, just tiny valleys and small rivers flowing a short distance from mountain to see. Very small catchment areas. I don’t see a good future for the country in the future climate…

Just like the commercial networks, you aren't reporting on the cause of these storms. Do an in depth report on global warming and which countries are largely to blame for the rising temperatures. Here's a hint: The US is right at the top. Then how about an in depth report on how the US government is doing little to nothing about it. Then show us, tell us how much the fossil fuel industry is donating to election campaigns and which lawmakers are complicit and compare those donations with the votes for and against legislation like the Green New Deal.

At a time when European countries are suffering from massive rainfall, we see the opposite here, where drought is sweeping the country - and temperatures reach 50 degrees Celsius in the month of August. Baghdad.🌹let's change the weather and countries 😁.

Storm is a disturbed state of astronomical body's atmospheric existence. European Wind storm Season 2023-24 is maybe 9th season for European windstorm. There's no understanding or universal definition of what constitutes any rainfall or windstorm maybe. Some theorists argue that extreme weather is more intensifying sea level rise due to climate change. At least five processes effect storm: Wind setup Atmospheric pressure Earth's rotation (Corilois Effect) Effect of waves Surface run off due to rainfall To allow for 'Forecast and Uncertainties' models of input parameters can be created as MOM( Maximum of Maximums) It's necessary to identify each category of a hurricane that will result in flooding. Otherwise storm surge will cause property damage and losses of life. Storm is unpredictable. But storm chasing can be good scientific investigations for understanding severe weather conditions and counter them.😊😊😅

It's not just the extreme weather. It's mainly the unprepared, failed and corrupt state of Mitsotakis which the media never talk about.

It's MAINLY because of the weather, not preparations. If you think differently, please tell us how would you prepare in a few short days to stop an entire year worth of rainfall?

they do not talk about because they are paid by Mitsotakis read about list Petsa (λίστα Πέτσα). He paid 19.832.132,94 nearly 20 million euros (state money mind you) to endorse as en excuse the Stay at Home campaign during Covid. I think it was more to put a good face for him its not by chance we are in the 107th possition in the freedom of the press
