As long as you are all ok Maiju as you say things can be fixed, what make is the polytunnel it looks so strong, luckily we only had the rain and wind not as strong as you had, the only damage I had on the plot was changing two panes in the greenhouse but I'm putting that down to the snow 3 weeks ago, its fell off roof weakened the guttering and its been hitting the glass in the corners , I changed the glass Saturday., I still have Cara in tubs so I will be tipping them out this weekend, great video Maiju, take care Steve C

Thank you, Steve 😀 We're delighted the greenhouse stood. It is a polycarb and we have its framework concreted into ground. The polycarb is 6mm thick, and all is bolted through, rather than just screwed to place. We ordered it from KSB greenhouse, they deliver in UK now also.... We installed it ourselves, I've couple of older videos about it 😊💚🌿

Thank you. You certainly had the worst of that storm. All the clearing up sets you back, and I know how you like everything to be neat and tidy! Oh wow jealous of your greenhouse illumination. @spudsandroses I buy fresh seed each year. We have a much smaller garden now so I don't need so many but really look forward to those first home grown potatoes. Belle de Fontenay are small, kidney shaped potatoes. with a good flavour (my opinion!). I am trying Red Duke of York this year as you have had success with them in pots. Plus Pink fir Apple and Nicola. That's the plan anyway.

Hi Maiju, sorry about the damage to the green roof. Your have harvest of Cara has reminded me how good they are, so may go with them this year. I chitted my chilli using wet paper towel in Tupperware box on the super 7 which has worked well this year, not always the case but this year has been good success.

Maiju, I am so sorry that happened to you. It gives you a chance to build it again though. The storms are crazy& very bad these days. I was so happy when you said the hens would be going into the house. that was so sweet. I feel a bit sorry for the plants in my garden in the winter as they have a tough time. I have been observing them this year more than ever. I do not have a polytunnel, but I guess that would not make them much healthier as it is just the nature of the seasons. I cant wait to buy more plants this year. Thank you.

I was thinking about you on Friday, wondering how you were faring in the storm, I dare say you didn't get much sleep! I'm so glad the damage was minimal, annoying as it is! We were one of the few areas not to have been hit, it was a bit breezy for sure, but nothing really of note thankfully. Not sure what I'm doing with potatoes this year. What I do know is that when I say 'I'm not going to grow spuds', or 'I'm only doing second earlier this year', I am in fact deluding myself and will soon find myself at the garden centre, paper bag in hand! 🤣 I've enjoyed Cara and Red DofY, also Desiree I found very productive. Last year I did Carolus (nothing special but productive and fairly blight resistant) and Kerrs Pink, which was not very productive and nothing of note to eat. I fancy a nice waxy salad potato this year...😊

By the look of my dark circles and puffy eyes, it looks like I was out on town for the whole night 😂😂 Oh, its somewhat scary to go out in the morning after the storm as you have to be prepared for any situation....But yes, the damage was not huge and at least not to the mortgaged parts of the property 🤣 How did you escape that storm? I thought it was a fluke seeing the whole map of Ireland in RED 😟 Haha, I know the feeling and holding the paper bag, ready to pick the varieties 😂😂 This time I bought the Charlotte and Red DofY in Kgs, it was cheaper, the more you buy the cheaper it was....I couldn't resist🤣 Our garden centre did not have any Cara or Desiree so far. But the variety choice is still huge out there.....Kerrs Pink was terrible for us, got sick early, small harvest and then really no taste.

@spudsandroses You look just fine! East of England was spared the worst of the winds- think our highest gust was about 30mph and I live on a hill, so just lucky this time around. I was glad to see your greenhouse stood up to it - I am still torn between the same one as yours or a traditional poly, so that is a box ticked lol!😁 I'm toying with the idea of getting a half plot to grow all my brassicas/potatoes etc as don't have much room in my home garden, so buying in Kg might happen!

Glad to see you are safe Maiju! Good the chicken coop held up ok. It must of been fun for the kids to have the ladies inside the house? So when did the power/water come back? If anyone could test and promote a powerbank would be you Maiju! At least when you fix the log roof, you can improve the lining of it. I think where you are, you are more exposed. I think considering how bad the storm was, it could have been worse and i don't think you could have done much more than you did to prep. Love those lights! Will make it much easier for you to see what you are doing in the greenhouse. Ideal for this time of year. My chilli's haven't come up either. I think it is the paper mache pot trays i am using. I might try a mushroom tub as i only have little pots or big seed trays. I am only doing a few and it goes on the radiator so needs to be able to balance on it ok. I also have chamomile tea now to soak the seeds before hand. Anyway, hope the weather gets better for you now and you have a much better week. Take care! x

Thanks a million for all of your support, it is very much appreciated 🥰💚🌿 Our power came back quickly this time, late Friday evening, I believe. Phone coverage came back around the same time. And the water was fully back by Sunday evening. Parts of Ireland will not have power until early next week.... I would love to test out a review power banks 😀😀 I'd have one separate in the greenhouse and one for the house 😂 I've just had another peek at the seedlings and the Jalapenos have a few up! Yey! but the Cabbages and Caulis are starting to get too leggy already 😀 so I might through them in the greenhouse and fingers crossed the slugs wont find them during the day.....I could really do with the hanging shelf in the greenhouse now 😂 The radiator should do the trick for you, lets have fingers crossed the seedlings will pop out and the weather gets better! Have a great week ahead! 😊💚🌿

@spudsandroses That was quick considering. Yes that would be a great power bank test, you can see how they fare in different temps/conditions. Congrats on the chilli's! Those homemade shelves with wood and chains look good and would keep a lot of critters out. You can then take it down when the stuff goes outside to make space for the warmer loving plants.

Was thinking of you and your family last weekend as the red warning covered the whole of Ireland - and so pleased to see you post rapidly after the event and have only suffered minor damage. Good preparation beforehand! As for potatoes, I grow Charlotte and Picasso in the garden, but on the allotment need something more robust against blight, so have put in Sarpo Mira for the last few years and am delighted with them as a good storing main crop. Also source my seed potatoes from the best of the 3 types that have lasted until Spring in the store. Enjoy the light in the greenhouse after work Maiju. When I was teaching I relished when it was light enough to spend some time in the garden at the end of a busy day. Restoration of the soul :)

Aww, thank you so much, that is very kind of you 🥰I really thought that RED map of Ireland was a mistake as a storm could not cover the whole of Ireland, but there it was, the worst storm officially recorded. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail 😀but we can easily take a break from all of these weather-emergencies 😂 Charlottes are the stars! I'm glad to hear Sarpo Mira did well for you, as it got the brown spot here and then did not give me a good harvest after. I saw my local garden centre selling King Edward variety, and I might try those this year for the over winter storage...there is too much choice 😊 The lights work out lovely, thank you. Thank you very much 😊💚🌿 Your growing season is probably much shorter in Norway, would you only grow 2nd earlies? or would you have enough frost free days for the main crop?
@trold1969
@trold1969 Күн бұрын
@spudsandroses Well, we have early and later, not sure if they equal to 2nd early or main. Maybe our early is your 2nd early. The season is short but the days are long, so they even grow potatoes in the northernmost county, where the sun doesn't set at all in the summer. Where I live we have 18,5 hours of sun midsummer and frost usually comes in November here. Oslo is at the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska, and if you look at Google earth, you see no farmland there, but thanks to the gulf stream, we can live and grow food in this country. ☺ The potatoes I'm ordering will be shipped in March for planting in April/May, and two varieties are early and two later. So I'll be a wiser potato grower by the end of the season hopefully. 😉

Considering the red warning for Ireland, good to hear you had minimal damage. The thought of 100mph winds sounds terrifying😬. Living on the coast, I gave up on weather stations some years back. I still look at the remaining wind vane for wind direction and the wind was so strong, it intermittently would stop the cups spinning from the sheer force. According to the Met Office, we had 60mph with Eowyn. I thought I’d again got away with it, but daylight revealed my old potting shed roof had taken a hit and one of the polycarbonate roof panels had snapped, leaving a gaping hole. Luckily I had a spare panel and it was replaced quickly before the next storm. I was more concerned about my large greenhouse, which thankfully appears unscathed… Will be properly checking that shortly😬🤞🏻. The festoon lights look fab in the polytunnel. What a great idea!

Luckily all our damage is fixable and wont be too costly to repair, but for people that had shallow rooted, old or already weak trees near their property, had a lot of damages. I've seen a lot of videos of stormy weather in cities, where items flying from neighbouring property would do more damage than anything else. So we do count ourselves so lucky for not having any of those problems either. Our weather stations have stopped to function before, too and it is annoying as it would be fascinating to find out the exact data 😍 of the wind direction, speed etc and then for next storms you'd be mentally better prepared... Our house is well insulated, but the howling and noise from the wind inside the house was still scary 😬 Very sorry to hear you had damage done to the shed. After this storm our new polycarb sheeting for the pergola will not be going up 😒 we couldn't take the risk and knowingly put it up when it can be potentially be broken by strong winds, just as the winds damaged the trellis.

@ Yes, climate change appears to be changing our thoughts process on what we can and can’t do in the future. I have a huge yew tree that has a preservation order on it, it’s older than my 1866 house😬. Defo will be trimmed back this year. I will start seeds off a few weeks earlier than I normally would this year and just fingers crossed for more sunlight this growing season. 😂 The potting shed’s life expectancy expired a couple of years ago and I now have a perfect excuse for a shiny new one!

@spudsandroses Well you've had another storm since you recorded the last one and more to come. These storms are going too keep coming all winter am afraid to say. As a EEC member you can if you wish move freely to any of the 27 countries without need of a visa and most of them have property much cheaper than Ireland You could sell yours and buy something at least 3 times the size garden for the same cost and if Portugal then I can say ten times as big as land and houses here are going for a song, but is your choice. I left for 3 reasons. one of which is the increase strength and frequency of the storms which won't improve untill such time as we have the next iceage too balance the world out and a big decrease in population and am very sure is on the cards inside the next decade, so don't say I didn't warn you. Is cold and wet here today as we are getting the bottom arm of this latest storm but the wind is tolerable, not as bad as forecast.

I take it that this wind/storms are not very common across the pond. I was up late watching live coverage and reading comments. The Unbelievable time we’ve had here carried across to you and I believe turned into a bomb cyclone with direct impact hitting the Bay Area of Galway-113 mph? Those clay roof tiles may have to be re-thought out as I couldn’t imagine those flying around. I’m in the upper Midwest and we are in a snow drought-down 15” and our snow is Way down south from Texas to Florida while we were in the middle of a polar vortex. I thought about maybe magnetic north was changing and sure enough Accuweather had an article that it was on the move from CN to Russia and it picked up pace. The sun just completed a cycle as well. Anyhow that craziness brought you that storm. We have tremendous tornadoes and hurricanes here with winds that reach 200+mph and blenderize everything in its path that can be miles long and wide. The people in North Carolina are still in campers and some their land washed away from hurricane rain in mountains. Then there are the fires in California-whole neighborhoods burnt to ashes. It will take 3-6 mos for environment cleanup and then those that can afford it can rebuild. Many had their insurance dropped 😬. There is a real concern about the batteries from EV cars and home power systems and a factory where batteries were made-oh man-it’s such a mess when these ever increasing in strength storms hit. They have to treat the batteries as live ammunition because they are that volatile. The fires were fanned by Santa Anna winds which were up to 80mph or so and humidity was only 1-3%😮. The videos are numerous online of the damages. Thankfully they had light rain now and not much for mudslides. One video creator caught some people setting off bottle rockets and I suspect that could be a cause of the fires. Hope they catch them-People 😵‍💫! February 8, 2024 was the first recorded tornado for Wisconsin and now we can expect them any month of the year. The unpredictable weather is making us seasoned crop growers scratch our heads. It’s crazy windy this week with January thaw. We worry also about fire when we have been so dry. These winters are not normal at all. I just hope it’s not an Amazon rainforest again this summer-that was too much. Nice lights😊

I'm not sure where do start...😟There are so many extreme weather events across US, how do you live with this constant worry? 😨 And to see how many hoses are built out of timber framing.... totally scary. I would only live underground then probably, in a bunker and grow root crops 😂 Become a mole.... All of this of course is not a joke if you have to experience it...and I would not have the houses designed the way they are if this weather is going to be getting worse, either... I hope you'll stay safe and take care 🥰💚🌿
@dustyflats3832
@dustyflats3832 5 сағат бұрын
@spudsandroses yes, in some areas a change in how houses are built would help. In California definitely! And keep brush cut and plants away from buildings. Living underground can run into issues because of low water tables and radon gas. And cement …well I’ve seen tornadoes crumble them. There really is no perfect place to live as you have experienced a wicked powerful event and don’t be surprised if they increase. One of the issues why there is immigration issues is due to weather. And with tornadoes there isn’t much that can stand up to EF3 or higher and affordable. And more recently earthquakes are not common on the east coast and they just had another 3.8 in Maine and none of the buildings there were built for earthquakes. No easy answer for sure. Oh, and then there are a ton of people in certain areas and many perched on mountains in California and if they get too much rain with all the vegetation burned-mud slides happen. Those in North Carolina in valleys were caught off guard with all the rain that came off the mountains with shrubs and trees and still washed away. And more population more loss and cleanup. I can imagine your area temps might be more regulated with bodies of water and rolling hills, but nothing to slow those storms down across water. North Carolina the hurricane slowed down, But that rain! There was no buildings to survive that. Sorry so chatty, but weather is something I’ve been concerned about for some time.
