I’m SO glad to see you’ve read a book I’ve already read lol. I’ve read 16 of the 17 books (excluding the novellas and short stories) and the only real issue I have with Harry is the chauvinism you mentioned. It’s a bit grating over time. There was also one book later in the series that I felt “jumped the shark” but with such a long running series and think that’s to be expected and I stuck with it.

LOL Oh there are a few I haven't read, especially those published in the last 10 years. The chauvinism might grate in the future, but so far, I can deal with it, because that is Harry himself, whereas the women aren't the damsels in distress he imagines they are. I'm currently on book 3, and so far loving them. Some flaws are to be expected with long series. Thanks for the feedback, Andrew. ❤

A crime drama WITH magic!! That sounds amazing. Perfect timing because I was looking for a new book. Found it at the library and downloaded already. Also, I thought this book sounded familiar, they made a TV series from it as well. Never actual saw it though. Thanks for the book ideas Kathi!

Let me know what you think of it, Sarah. I haven't seen the series, and won't until I finish the books. I've also seen rumours of them remaking the series. That could be exciting.

@@NerdyKathi I really liked the book. Defn couldn’t put it down. I actually like books written in first person. I sometimes feel it is unfair knowing things the main character doesn’t know 🤣. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Thanks Kathi, I was looking for some new books to read.

Love this thorough, thoughtful, and honest take. I'm in the middle or a re-read of the series as some new paperbacks are about to come out. I just started book three, and have to say, I am a happy new subscriber. Can't wait to see more.

Thank you so very much. Your comment really touched me. I can definitely see myself re-reading this series, as it grows progressively more intricate and detailed.

I just picked up the series. I have heard about it for years and figured it was mainstream as can be, so I'm kinda surprised how few reviews there are on KZbin. Yours are great though and I'm happy to see you have done all of them.

I really need to read more. When I do bite the bullet I find myself reading mystery books. I enjoy mystery shows and who done it reality shows like Forensic Files, Dateline, etc.

You described Harry very well. And you’re description of the ending is fair. That will improve. In some books, the endings are action packed. And the books become funnier, believe it or not. His interactions with some characters are snappy and hilarious.

Also (lol) I think it’s interesting that you brought up not liking reading a book in the first person. The thing I don’t like about that is, I feel like it’s a bit of a spoiler. If I’m being told a story from someone’s point of view and it takes place in the past, then I can assume that they live to the end somehow which can take some of the excitement out of it.

Yes! I agree. We know they can't die, when it's their story. I think first person narratives have become increasingly popular, but it's not always done well.
@7Seraphem7

Yes, but that doesn't mean there aren't still major stakes for both the main character, and especially for other characters. Plus, there can always be some kind of twist, especially in one already based on fantasy, of this being something like his ghost retelling the events of his life or something. Sometimes the reveal of just who they are telling the story to and why can be amazing in and of itself. But like pretty much all choices in making a story, it comes down to how well it's handled.

Just had your Dresden reviews linked on a Discord server... very nice reveiw of the first book and, fair points all around. I know you are quite a bit further in at this point so, can skip the usual "Welcome to Dresden" spiel about the first two books being less then ideal and to stick it out till books 3 and 4, but then again, given how much you liked this one, not needed. Pretty much everything you praised are things that are the core of the series, which Butcher gets better and better at handling as he goes on, and the negatives, also mostly either issues of this being his first book, or other things that get smoothed out as the story goes. Above all, the humor and characters remain utterly sublime and just get more engaging and more perfect all the time. Story wise, yeah...this and book 2, as said, are the weakest of the lot when it comes to story structure, it's more about introducing the characters and setting the groundwork for what is to come more then anything. Now to get to the rest of the reviews, and eagerly await more cause, this is gonna be one hell of a fun ride!

That is so very kind of you Seraphem, thank you sincerely. Which Discord server, if I may ask? I know people say the first few books aren't as good as the others, but I disagree. Yes, Butcher is learning his craft and improves on different aspects of it in future books, but it is the first that hooked me. I am much more tolerant of a first book, because writing is a skill that should improve with practice, and I found Butcher's first book excellent, particularly when compared to other first books I've read. I agree that the books improve, and that it is the characters, the humour, the world he has created and the overall story arcs that make it such a wonderful, engrossing series. If you haven't guessed, I am loving the ride so far. 😂 Thank you very much for the feedback.

@@NerdyKathi It was the server for the Legendarium Podcast book reviewers. And,like many yeah, my first thought on reading the series was "Wait, these are supposed to be the bad books?" But compared to what comes later... ohhhhh boy. Still, they do a great job of setting the foundation for the series!
