As someone who knew about this expansion, forgot about it, then stumbled upon it again looking for a somewhat parallel plot line to Tyranny of Dragons for a smaller backup party, this guide is a life-saver. Well laid out as always, concise, and very informative. Thanks for the recommendations on quest order, too.

Reading through the Thunder Cliff quest, I think there are some changes I'd make to the sailing portion of the quest: I do not like the idea of the mutiny at all. Instead, I will have both captains involved. If the players choose to go with the dragonborne, he will do some culty stuff. The fight will likely destroy his galley and the tabaxi's ship will come to the rescue! If the players choose the tabaxi, then they will get attacked by the dragonborne! One or more of the crewmen will have the information in "Bad News." Also the invisible stalker doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe 3-4 Manticores.

Great changes. I totally agree about the mutiny. D&D ship travel has the same problem as Sci-Fi movies and Cryosleep- you KNOW it’s going to go wrong. I think unmaking use of both captains is a better solution 👍🏻

Great stuff as always! Here are a few other things I'll be adding to my campaign. First, our crew didn't get to the Tower of Storms in DOIP, so I'm definitely going to steer them that direction at the start of this adventure on their way to Leilon from Phandalin by having brooding black unnatural skies on the horizon. Since the Spellplague is actually necessary knowledge to understand what happened to Leilon, I added some History / Arcana checks for them to know more past "Something bad happened 100 years ago". With a DC 18 they will know that the Spellplague was the result of Mystra dying and this has caused some competition amongst the gods, which is possibly why there is an increased presence of both Talos and Myrkul right now. I thought it was weird that there was literally zero reward for completing the House of Thalivar quest. Yes, the experience is awesome, but the party could potentially be fighting some seriously tough baddies. As a reward I decide that Gallio Elibro will let them have one free use of his Legend Lore spell, and the frightened soldiers will share a few of their health potions and healer's kits if the party didn't steal any already. The Thunder Cliffs Quest is so big! I divided it into two quests - one called "Out to Sea" and the other "Thunder Cliffs". I decided to make Captain Kristoffen try to poison the party at dinner the first night at sea if they choose him. Also changed the sea and air enemies the party encounters as they get closer to the shore of the cliffs. Instead of an invisible stalker and giant crab, they'll face 2 Manticores and a Giant Octopus with some legendary "Kraken-ish" actions.

Thanks for the write up. My players definitely made this interesting for me. At thunder cliffs my party decided to sneak by the cultist spies in section 2 , then killed all the scouts in section 5. Then the PCs decided they were going to use the blowhole until something happened just because i rolled each time they stepped into it. most got lucky and went to waterdeep but 2 ended up in the water plane. it took them a in game week to regroup and are now headed back, and since the cultists found the bodies in section 5 and realized someone was able to sneak in, this area will need to have enhanced defenses.

@BobWorldBuilder
@BobWorldBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
I think pre-made characters are great for completely new players. You can present them with a few options and let them choose, then dive right into the game, and they learn as they go. After several sessions when the players have a better handle on the rules, they can always make their own character. That said, when I first played, we all made are own characters as a group and we had no idea what we were doing but it was still a ton of fun and we learned as the campaign went on

@@BobWorldBuilder Thanks! Storm Lord's Wrath has been interesting to run. I ended up adding a dungeon in Leilon, as the PCs were looking for a good dungeon crawl. I looked up some lore on Leilon, and I found this about a part of historical Leilon: Manyclaws Alley - This dangerous place was thought to be haunted by the ghosts of some trolls, but in reality it was haunted by nine heucuva. The alley was all that remained of a temple to Loviatar that was demolished long ago. The undead guarded the treasure that was still buried beneath the alley in forgotten vaults, unknown by the people of Leilon. So I made a dungeon of the remains of an ancient temple deep below the city. It was pretty intense!

Atleast let the players know dead or alive some bad dragon spirit may poses them, teh corpse at dragon barrow as well. They all become more interesting. I gave my players a property awarded to them for defeating Cryovain that is in Leilon from Harbin Wester. I had Tibor Wester move to Leilon as a head of some of the builders. We just finished the Tower, which my players wanted to do at night, so it meant that the ghost had possessed Galio. Actually had set up earlier with one player a plot hook based on his character's background which included an item "letter from an old friend" made the letter be from Thalivar as a ghost. That player knows the real reason for what was found using the planar beacon, because of how we worked his story into it. He'll probably help with rebuilding the tower. Another player is wanting to turn their property into a hotel/bar. The others are barbarians with religious sides (one a zealot, one a multiclass paladin) so don't have too much interest in the town yet, but hoping to get something going with replacing or supplementing the religion there already. So hoping this involvement in the town will make them more invested in the future in the later adventures

Hey Bob, I've began running this campaign and have read through all 3 of the extension modules. The thing that really has me stumped is how to introduce the two cults as the BBEGs here, as especially the necromancer just seems to be around, but not really given any context until end of module 2. Unless I straight up get a character to tell them the deal, I don't see how the module sets anything up.

You’re right that SLW doesn’t include much of the undead cult. It’s mainly about the “Storm Lord,” but About half of the encounters are solving problems caused by the cults. SLW begins with branded zombies attacking the inn, then cultists of Talos attacking Leilon, then culminates in stopping a storm ritual and infiltrating the storm lord cult headquarters. I think there’s a lot in place already, so you could take out the non-cult quests to really keep it focused

When the party finally located the lizard folk camp, the impulsively attacked them but so had the rot trolls enter soon which prevented a slaughter. One of the flail snail’s stunning brilliance froze the rot trolls for a turn or two giving the party valuable time to establish an alliance with the lizardfolk and make a strategic positioning. Their earlier impulsivity made that difficult. The wise lizard chief was JUST able to control his angry people. Good drama.

My party had a hard time on the foul weather at Wayside Inn quest, but they pulled through. The tied up innkeeper had to break herself out when they fought in the basement. She drew aggro and helped the party win, but was knocked unconscious in the last round. The party was disorganized as they tried to help their fallen party members and she succumbed to her wounds (causing some good inter-party conflict as they wrestle with consequences) I would recommend to be VERY clear that the party can pray to talos to try to protect from the lightening. Even with the hints set up by the book, my party didn't even consider it. I think the real trick should be a moral conflict, praying to the evil god, as opposed to whether or not the players understand that they can try. Maybe play that up and describe the influence it has on the characters psyche afterwards! If a character refuses to pray and takes a lot of damage as a result, maybe give them a point of inspiration for roleplaying the character sticking to their guns.

Great video! My party just completed "missing patrol" and is about to start Thalivar's quest -- would welcome thoughts on how to run this one, as it seems a little tricky -- many important points hidden in inaccessible areas (a week of digging?) I suspect I'll allow enough space in the rubble for my party's wild shape druid to "cat" his way in to the room holding the journal! For those running a party of four-or-fewer like I am, I'd recommend running only one water elemental in the first "save Leilon" adventure. Totally echo Bob on omitting thunder bolt bracers in Wayside Inn. Lastly, in an attempt to add some story spice into the missing patrol adventure, I had private Jessup be an unwilling member of the "Sons of Alagondar" -- with Neverember's representatives quietly asking if he plans on pressing his possibly legitimate claim to the Alagondar line back in Neverwinter. Already a member of the Neverwinter guard, he declined, saying he'd have no part in pressing his claim. Quickly reassigned to Leilon, Sgt. Yorrum then sends him to the swamp, where he mysteriously disappears... Kind of a spurious story invention, but seemed to add a little more drama to Leilon. My only concern now is how the rest of the trilogy treats Yorrum... was it a mistake making him slightly villainous, I wonder?
@BobWorldBuilder
@BobWorldBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
I’ll keep an eye out for how Yorrum is treated in the other modules because I like the idea! Also the rubble part in Thalivar’s tower doesn’t ring a bell... if that was to get into his room, there’s also the memory-wiping window entrance. I would use appearances of the ghost or giving the party a chance to follow Gallio’s possessed body, to lead them to the room with the journal, the fey servant’s body, or even Thalivar’s body of the party gets stumped

@@BobWorldBuilder Thanks! I ran the House of Thalivar the other day, and it went pretty well, read out follows. A member of my party with an affinity for fey uncovered Soapwort's body on the first floor, which immediately drew the party's attention (but only after a lot of complaining about how bad the Neverwinter guard were -- missing patrols, and now this?!!! :) ) Using queues from the random roll table, I threw in several spooky effects as they investigated the library). The party found Thalivar's body with little difficulty -- immediately after which I had my party hear pitter patter behind them, but when they turned to look they only found hand prints up and over the edge (purple ink), leading into the room with the journal below. I cheated (I think) and made the room reachable via the scaffolding, but kept the "turn around and forget" saving throw at the room's threshhold (2 of my 4 were denied entry). Upon reading the handout and seeing mention of the ruinstone -- and the more recent entries -- my party all said "aha!" ... putting Gallio's pieces together and the need for funeral rites. Interestingly, they also attributed the "turn around" effect to the ruinstone, which they assumed was still buried in the rubble near Thalivar's room. Am now looking at Aid From Phandalin... which perhaps should have been named Aid FOR Phandalin! :) Welcome lessons-learned for this one!

@@BobWorldBuilder I don't mean to monopolize space here, and though I welcome comments, please do not feel compelled to respond -- completely understand that everybody's fighting the ticking clock in one form or another! If OK, I'm using this space to annotate my encounters, in the hope it helps folks (guides for this supplement are pretty rare, I think!) Below is a readout of the first half of Aid from Phandalin (i.e. giant goat herding!) My wildshape druid loved picking up a new animal for his list of animals (can be found in D&D Beyond's home brew!) For character flavor, I had the goatherd use Mongolian-style throat singing to herd the goats (a combination of deep humming and low whistling, great documentaries out there for those interested!) My party passed their animal handling checks for the wyverns, and were kind of disappointed that they didn't get to fight them. For the Ogre attack, my players on watch that night failed their check, and nodded off at the campfire. The party all awoke with a start to the goats bleating in alarm as the Ogres ran off with giant goats tucked under each arm -- and the chase was on! (First I've ever run) Based on a KZbin video on chases offered from our friends in the UK, I made it skill-based rather than the type found in the DM guide. I did this by simply drawing 3 lines in front of the characters on the map in Roll20 -- with the Ogres in front of the hash marks to the left -- and then drew 3 lines behind the characters. I had the players choose their favored skills on each round, based on initiative, and then checked them (DC 10). If they succeeded, then they had to describe how this skill allowed them to move one line closer to the Ogres. If they failed, they moved one line back. The idea is that once a player reaches the Ogres, then the battle begins, with each other member of the party joining the battle however many rounds later, based on their location on the lines drawn. While my players seemed to enjoy the change of pace, I made a mistake by setting the DC so low -- would suggest maybe DC 15 at the lowest. All my players crossed the finish line at the same time, which kind of took away from the suspense. Still, it was pretty fun! Will be trying the 3-sided fight next time -- and would welcome your thoughts on how best to run that!

Just finished off the second-half of Aid from Phandalin today -- took my group two sessions (about 1 1/2 hrs apiece). They really spent a long time trying to find the two no-goods in town, which forced me into a few uncomfortable spots trying improvise small details that would allow the 3-sided battle to take place (details like invented rumors about strange men seen around Edermath's orchard late at night, etc.) My players seemed genuinely surprised by the 3-sided battle at the end, and though we had fun playing it, I'm not quite sure I did it right -- battle took about an hour and a half. I had the two enemy parties charge at eachother, with the party caught in the middle -- for those not engaged in the battle, I automatically had each kobald/ghoul deal 10 damage to each other. My party's warlock did a great job with crowd control via area-based tentacles. The group was also pretty surprised by the vampire (not really realizing what it was until it bit!) In hindsight, I wish I had focused on "thorns" in the swamp during the "Missing Patrol" quest so my group could immediately recognize their importance as it related to the vampire. Welcome thoughts on how to manage a 3-sided fight a little more quickly!

My players and I are about to finish the main campaign and they have real strong feelings about Talos (roleplay in the circle of thunder and tower of storms was really really fun), so we're definitely gonna play Storm Lord's wrath, and your games are always really fun and helpful! Thank you in advance! For real, your content is amazing

Hey Luis, thank you so much! No gameplay videos planned for these quests because Grace and I have not actually played through them. Are you planning on coming back to SLW in your video series (or did I miss it that you covered the whole module)? Just finishing DOIP and reading through this adventure online and making notes to weave into my off-the-script storyline. The discussions in the comments for your DOIP series of videos were very interesting and good DM fodder. I was hoping for more of the same for SLW.

First of all, thanks for all the videos on DoIP and now the follow-up adventures. The DoIP is my group's first ever campaign, my first experience as a DM and your videos helped A LOT. Now, my question: right now (we play-by-post) the group is having a conversation with an envoy from Lord Neverember at Phandalin's tavern. They're asking for details of Leilon and the region, as well as how much coin is being offered, etc. Even though this exactly what the firs hook suggests, I'm thinking of offering them another hook at the same time: spying for waterdeep. I thought about the spy envoy meeting them and being aware of lord neverember's proposition, but they would try to offer the spy job still, asking the players to play real double-agents. So what do you think, would you have any suggestions on how to pull this one off? Even though I think it will be much fun, it would mean be a bit more work for me :D

And no, as I mentioned in the Icespire Hold guide, Grace and I aren't playing through all of these quests first.
