I was stormchasing southwest of Eunice in New Mexico on the 3rd of june. Just got back home in the Netherlands last friday. I was shooting with my R6 with 24-105mm. 24mm / F22 and 0.4 seconds. No ND filter needed. Made one of my most beautiful supercell pictures with a nice CG lightning in it. Was hoping to see you on the road there! Also shot a lot of nice birds in the US, White-tailed kite and a scissor-tailed flycatcher. I also am thinking about selling my 90D and purchase an R7 for my nature photography. Love your vids, keep up the good work! With kind regards, Marcel Bruggeman from the Netherlands.

Oh that's awesome! I wish I could have been out there for those storms. That's still like 6 hours from me though. I'm envious of the kite and scissor-tail too, I don't have any decent images of either of those.

Wish the monsoon would start over here in the greater Phoenix area... Unexpected dust storm yesterday, but no rain or lightning yet. Need to get the camera Gobag ready for the season. Envious of your epic shots for sure! Thanks Brent!

Yeah, it's a little hotter over there than here...though it has hit 99 here a few times already, and that's not cool, especially for 6K ft. Hopefully we all get some actual rain soon.
@trkauff2 жыл бұрын
@@BrentHall last question, when you set up for lightning at night without filters, do you under expose to compensate for the brightness of the lightning flashes? Just trying to get an idea of where to start.
@BrentHall2 жыл бұрын
@@trkauff It depends on how close/big the bolts are. The closer they are to you the brighter they will be, so sometimes you can get away with normal exposures if they're distant, but sometimes you might have to underexpose by anywhere up to like 5-6 stops. There's no good rule for that other than just taking test shots while you're out there each time.

Something to think about - since that is one of your convenient locations, make up a little wooden (or metal) bracket that can be clamped to that metal railing and hold a spare tripod head. It only takes a few seconds to clamp to the railing, it will be very sturdy, and it frees up one of the tripods. You probably have some old tripod heads kicking around the house anyway so the total cost will be low. Just an idea...
@BrentHall2 жыл бұрын
Oh man, yeah I've never even thought about that. I actually already have a bunch of magic arm clamps with ball heads attached, lol. Maybe I should start keeping one of those in the car for times like that...

OMG..I'm so jealous...You have such a great spot to capture lightning photos. 98% of the time I have to capture mine from my garage with houses in front of me. It's been an early heat wave here in Texas. No chance of rain in foreseeable future...totally bummed...Fantastic photos you got of all that lightning. I usually capture mine with my 5D MK III, but I have to watch my timing, too long and I'm editing sensor burn marks in my photos for a long time.

Yeah, I'm lucky I have a ton of easy access spots around here! Hopefully we'll both get some more rain soon.

Yeah, it's a little trickier to capture lightning with phones. I tried it last year with the S21 Ultra too, and got a couple okay shots, but had a few more issues compared to with my mirrorless cameras, lol.

Hey Brent what do you think of R7?
@davidelliott66102 жыл бұрын
Great work, do you think a lightning detector/trigger would work as well after the 16 minute mark in your video? it certainly seems dark enough. I'm definitely going to try using the intervalometer.
@BrentHall2 жыл бұрын
Idk, I've never tried any triggers. I always just set up timelapses cause I'd rather have the timelapse too.

@@BrentHall thanks I asked as those conditions at that time are more or less the conditions that I struggle with using a trigger . Next time I will try your method . Thanks again

Good video and good information but I have one question. First sorry for mine anglish In mi country we dont have a lot storms with lighting and i dont have a lot options for setings. Question is... Is better choice if I buy the filter with 8 or more stops or is better if i close the aperture?

@xijiang27282 жыл бұрын
Great work. Question for you, do you set 2 or 3 stops down, so when lightning occurs the exposure will be just right? Otherwise the picture would be over exposed?
@BrentHall2 жыл бұрын
It just depends on how close the bolts are, or how much they're filling your frame. The closer/bigger they are, the brighter they will be, so you might even have to stop down 5-6 stops if they're really big. I think that big multi-bolt image at night in the video was probably about 2 stops under, but I don't remember.
