Fun fact: this song is anachronistic for the game. “Stormalong John” is an altered version of the latter half of the American folk song “General Taylor” about the titular General Taylor in the Mexican-American war and was written sometime shortly after his death in 1850. It is also sung to the tune of another song called “Santiana” which, ironically, is a slightly earlier 1850’s era British song that praises Taylor’s main enemy during the war, President Antonio López de Santa Anna. Both songs however are inaccurate in their retelling of the war. “General Taylor” states that Taylor died heroically in battle while in reality he died years after the war of disease. “Santiana” states that Santa Anna (known as Santiana to the British sailors who deserted their posts to fight for Mexico) “gained the day” when in fact he lost the war and that he was killed by Taylor during the battle of Molino del Ray when In fact neither Santa Anna or Taylor were at that battle and Santa Anna outlived Taylor by some 25 years, living in exile in various different countries after losing the war, finally being allowed back in 1874 shortly before his death in 1876. The man called Stormy mentioned both in “Stormalong John” and “General Taylor” is a little-known fictional American folk hero named Alfred Bulltop Stormalong.
