Storms Rats Floods on Skid Row Homeless Encampments Los Angeles, walk with me on a very stormy windy and rainy day on skid row as everyone tries to stay dry. Today was a difficult day for the homeless as the storms caught everyone off guard including myself as I struggled to keep my umbrella in one piece. It seems like we have more people waiting in line for food now on skid row. Alot of people seek shelter indoors during the storms.
Skid Row, officially known as Central City East, is a neighborhood in Downtown Los Angeles. It contains one of the largest stable populations (approximately 9,200-15,000) of homeless people in the United States and has been known for its condensed homeless population since at least the 1930s1. Covering fifty city blocks immediately east of downtown Los Angeles, Skid Row is bordered by Third Street to the north, Seventh Street to the south, Alameda Street to the east, and Main Street to the west12.
The term “skid row” or “skid road” originated from a logging context. Loggers would transport logs to nearby rivers by sliding them down roads made from greased skids. Loggers who accompanied the load to the bottom of the road would wait there for transportation back up the hill to the logging camp. Over time, the term began to be used for places where people with no money and nothing to do gathered, becoming the generic term in English-speaking North America for a depressed street in a city1.
In terms of demographics, the racial makeup of Central City East includes approximately 39.7% Black/African American, 22.3% White, 16.3% Asian, and 15.1% Hispanic or Latino residents. The population is spread across various age groups, with a significant portion falling within the 25 to 54 age range. While there is currently no up-to-date population estimate due to limited data, it is estimated that the population increased by 13% after the COVID-19 pandemic1.
Skid Row remains a notable district in Los Angeles due to its long history of police raids, targeted city initiatives, and advocacy efforts related to homelessness1. SL, felt sorry for the rat dying alone like that; we see in your rainy-day coverage that everyone out there has a will to survive no matter how tough it gets; they put up some pretty, well-built tents to keep dry. Cali now has about 3.2 Million undocumented people at the last count and they are not assimilating; they will end up like that poor, homeless rat scrambling around until a shopping cart hits him. All the inner cities are being overrun by rats and the blue-tent people. This situation is beyond sad; but, you do such an awesome job with your umbrella and camera recording the horrific collapse and what degradation looks like at street level. We are going sub-human, little by little. My warmest regards for your bravery and persistence in saving this for future generations to see, as this generation is lost. i visited LA for the first time last month... was lookin forward to seeing "Tinseltown" after all these years of seeing the bright hollywood lights on tv... but when we got there i was like WTF IS THIS?!?!??!?... homeless camps EVERYWHERE... on the freeway almost every road sign covered with graffiti (barbed wire at the base of the signs that are not marked)... the walk of fame looked like the set from sanford and son... what a DUMP... the mainstream news media does a bang up job of making sure we NEVER see what's in this vid... absolutely TERRIBLE (although we did get to see the intersection of hayvenhurst ave and plummer... the bridge used in the terminator 2 wrecker/chase sequence... after that i broke camp and got the hell outta there)

My solution is that on everyone's social security card there are numbers that say where they were generated. The states need to take those people back or send California the money for them to have a homeless tiny home. This is so heartbreaking!! The cost to live there is astronomical, and they have no way to get somewhere more affordable to live. Yes, addiction is a problem and the garbage is unsightly... But these are PEOPLE. The government needs to step up with funding affordable/transitional housing and recovery programs! And unfortunately that falls on the taxpayers. But we need to take care of our neighbors.

There are videos of slums in India. L.A. seems heading to be like Calcutta or Mumbai. Their slums are what our "encampments will look like in a few more years. I am shocked and see how much trash is just on the streets and whoever lots that trash. If they had a house to see what it looks like and if it's from the homeless, they need to start picking that trash up instead of being like a rat and taking everything and throwing it wherever they want this is unacceptable for these streets in California especially L AI thought the river was bad LA is worse. I don't know what San Diego looks like. Put the city needs to start putting Tri scans out there for the homeless to put the trash in just not all over the streets and not all over the ocean in the ocean. This is disgusting to look at this and I don't disclaim the homeless I blame the city because the housing crisis the drug use but basic because the city does not put trash cans out there for them to put their trash in. After living in California for 52 years I couldn’t stand it anymore. The homelessness..crime and general poor living conditions were too much. If the people of California keep electing the same people nothing’s going to change. I moved to another state and am so much happier.

Also illegals are counted in the census so politicians get mor funding as well. Nothing will change until it’s totally destroyed like Seattle or San Francisco under Pelosi. I believe the governments dont care enough about the people on the streets to do anything to help the situation. Yes, it will cost money, but then politicians live in fancy homes and earn great money. Why should they care? Tiny homes and communal facilities is a start. I am sure there is land around that could be used. We are talking about human beings here. I guess for some people, it is out of sight, out of mind. This is so heartbreaking! Tear down an unused building. Fix up an old hotel/motel. There are things that could be done to fix this problem. Get big corporations to help out

Why should they get a home just given to them when everyone else works for it! Put them in work camp, locked in at night no drugs n get on bus n go work cleaning garbage up for starters. 3 meals, oatmeal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch n cheap dinner like spaghetti, shower watch TV in a day room go to bed, morning go to work start all over again!
