I get what you’re saying, Pete deserves someone whole and sweet but he deserves someone who can also understand the complex part of his personality that he keeps hidden, the part which has stemmed from trauma and abuse from childhood. A sweet whole normal person can probably empathise with his dark side but Vegas has gone through it himself and gone through worse trauma probably. So he doesn’t need to try to empathise, he can understand that part the best. Also Pete is someone who loves being a caregiver and I think he is happier to give care than be only taken care of, he feels accomplished and satisfied if he is able to save another soul because he knows the how it hurts and finally the freedom of redemption. Which is why I think Vegas is suited for Pete in the character and context of the story. At first even I hated Vegas and didn’t understand how Pete ended with him when a sweet person like him deserves only an equally sweet person. I used to think how can a broken person be healed by another broken person…. But after several readings of the novel, fanfics and rewatching the series I realize that these 2 broken souls could successfully heal each other because they also healed themselves in the process. Pete was the one who changed the dynamic but Vegas would be Pete’s forever. Torture is never justifiable and the way Vegas tortured Pete, if I was in Pete’s place I would escape at first chance but I am not Pete. However when Vegas fell for Pete’s unconditional love, he fell harder than any other character. He is in certain aspects quite a psycho, but it means he’ll protect and guard Pete with his life against everyone and anyone , if required even against himself. Vegas is like the villain.. heroes can sacrifice their love to save the world for greater good, but a villain will sacrifice the world to save his love. Maybe this is one of the few stories where a dysfunctional relationship actually worked and proved beneficial for both of them and the people surrounding them ❤

This two were the reason I watched the show. Pete’s compassion, if twisted, for Vegas gave him a new perspective, as sick and broken as Vegas was he was not a lost cause. Someone who cares and protects something as fragile and simple as a small animal still has some good in their soul. Vegas firced , and extreme, adoration of that he allows himself to love was his Hail Mary.
