Story of my 4 Failures at UPSC Prelims and mistakes that beginners must avoid

This is my story where I have traced journey of my 4attempts at UPSC EXAMINATION. A story of rising every time when I hit the rock bottom aspiring to clear this exam one day . There are thousands of stories of successful UPSC aspirants who could make it to the holy pdf of UPSC. But the other side was not given the required attention. Maybe not everyone will be able to relate with my story but those who are on the same boat as me might feel it. I hope this pain helps us realise our Lifegoal and we all may have our happy endings.
For beginners in UPSC journey..they need not fear but just to see what mistakes I committed and they have to avoid it. This story is not to discourage anyone in any manner.

Don't disappoint and I think SSC cgl demands more time for maths, reasoning so it willbe better to go for state pcs like MP,UP,Bihar along with upsc which I can say you have studied since long and have pretty knowledge

You are not 24 you are just 24 and most of the people start giving exam at the age of 24 do not give up now give all the 6 attempts that you have I am sure you are mains ready ek bhi prelims nikla you will be under 200 rank for sure 70 percent of the people clearing prelims have not written a single answer for mains and you have hussled for 3-4 years just believe yourself.Just one tip for prelims-Do research on the pyqs between 1995 to 2024 along with options ncert based research + read india year book(please read it nicely ) these two will take you through prelims do not do over analysis in prelims jaise baaki exam dete ho waise hi do aap isko bhi hoga prelims.

Dear Sister, Prioritize getting a private job as soon as possible, even if it takes 6-12 months. Having your own income boosts confidence and a job provides a new routine, helping to prevent depression. Trust me you will have ample time to prepare for UPSC, as I assume you've already completed 60-80% Mains syllabus. Additionally, from my understanding, the UPSC board may favor a candidate with work experience, even if it's their 5th attempt, over one without a job." Best of Luck

Sister same here!! This was my third attempt and was scoring around 88-89 in gs and was at borderline line in csat!!! But on 1st july when result came i didn't clear!! What went wrong didnot know 😭 !! But will not loose hope started preparing for pcs prelims hope of clearing it

Consider state pcs strongly, Hard work is rewarded there as the questions are not dynamic which Upsc has. If you want to keep the dream alive, secure a job in state PCS. Also, sit for NABARD Grade A, the main syllabus closely aligns with the GS3 of UPSC mains.

Prepare for the mains till December. Prepare for the mains in such a way that after clearing prelims, you don’t have to stuck in the mains. Do whatever you can-revision, coaching, test series-anything to prepare for the mains 100 percent. Don’t leave anything out: write full-length mains mocks and attempt the actual upcoming mains paper in December. Prepare for your optional subject until March. Start prelims preparation from January, and do the prep in four iterations: 2 months, 1 month, 15 days, and 7 days. Attempt as many mocks as you can; they increase your knowledge base. Attempt the last 10 years' PYQs five times, and understand the mindset of the examiner in framing the questions. Make notes of mocks and PYQs content, and revise them multiple times. Don’t forget the mapping and ancient art and culture. Find your optimal question base to attempt; mine was 91-94. I am sure if you do this, you will definitely clear prelims. And believe me, if you clear prelims, then you have to be ready to write mains. It’s not like you can start mains prep from scratch after prelims; if you do this, you are going to fail mains again. Trust me, if you study for mains, you will get marks in mains, unlike prelims. So for the next five and a half months, prepare for mains with 100 percent effort. I am telling you again: do not leave anything in optional to complete after prelims. Be ready for your optional, write tests and mocks, get them evaluated, and complete everything in optional. Optional decides your selection and rank. I heard it somewhere: if you have given 100 percent and you do not get the desired results, then give your 100 percent again because the first loss might be because of your luck, but the second loss after 100 percent effort can’t possibly be due to luck. So like you said you have given your best in the 2024 attempt, I suggest you give another 100 percent again and follow the above steps. Most likely, you will clear prelims and mains. All the best, and give your 100 percent again.

I am 23 year old will turn 24 in November my life story is way different from anybody else i suffered from Lymphadenopathy after my 10th standard and so i had a huge 2 year break so when you were in 1 st year of college i started doing 11 .....in 2023 it was supposed to be my first attempt but i was unprepared and i knew that my attempt will go waste so i dropped unfortunately pressure of marriage started coming and so many different things in life happened i went into depression for 8-9 months ( i had sucidal thoughts ) i was behind compared to everyone with whom i use to sit till 10th ....but my family constantly supported me i took therapies , my mother said ok no marriage till you get success and now i am going to appear for 2025 .....i belong to humble background job security is what i need but still i will be starting at age 24 Aapka video dekhakar laga ki you are quitting at 24 while i will be starting at 24 ....i am way behind 😢

Be confident.Give your 5th attempt and make your name in the list.In 4th attempt you are just missed by 2 or 3 marks.It is not failure according to positive peoples.

You should go for a job first that will provide you a financial stability and a peaceful environment for your preparation you have enough time for preparation for upsc but your attempts are limited so in my opinion you should go for a job it doesn't matter how small it is then you can prepare in parallel for upsc

I will say that try to prepare for exams that have syllabus very close to that of UPSC ( along with studying for UPSC also ). This can help you and save a lot of time , like some State PCS exams or anything that closely aligns with UPSC syllabus . Also see what subjects attract you the most and see if there's any quick way to get job through preparing those subjects like Economics Service Exam which is separately conducted by UPSC you can Google it for further information, but I'll say that don't skip your UPSC CSE preparation also , just analyse all the options that are available to you right now and your priorities and accordingly take a calculated decision . This was mine also fourth attempt and i also couldnt made it 2021 i graduated in june and in october i gave attempt i had only 26 marks In 2022 in june i gave attempt 95.64 gs 62. Csat 2023 75.14 in gs and 68 in csat 2024 again scoring between 90 96 But still couldnt make Its not a time to cry its time to take decision i am thinking to first go for job security than i will give my rest attempt i have decided to go for ssc for while because jobs are many so good opportunity for job security

Give yourself some break.. may be a month or two, break means complete break... you will have clarity. After my third attempt i quit upsc, joined a private job, got married, quit job and now i am giving my 5th and last attempt (turning 32). All this while upsc never left me. It will always be your decision. If i was at your place, I would have enrolled in masters and after a gap of an year would have again started preparing for upsc. Regarding marriage, there are so many boys out there who would not mind if their partner decides for preparing and fulfilling their dream. I myself have discussed this with my husband before finalising our arrange marriage. You are so young champ. May be this is not the right time for upsc, or agar still you will presist or 5th attempt me unfortunately same story rehti hai then you know how it will be....risk logi toh fir fauladi bankar lena which you already are! ❤ but if you enroll in masters, or any job... you will definitely learn and explore, go out and horn your skills and then come back to upsc. Alternatively try state pcs eg uppcs exam, pre specially is much doable and you will definitely crack it ... mains likhna fir... abhi toh bht years hai, you are just 24, save your attempts and your mental Peace. Baki its always your choice and your calling. Remember its YOU who is attempting this exam, not this exam attempting you., your peace is most important.

This was my 3rd attempt scored 90 in OBC category according to drishti still couldn't clear. But i was practical and before my 2nd attempt i had given SSC CGL 2022 which i cleared and now i have a backup and am not too worried about financial conditions and since I've given this much time to this preparation that i do not need to do full time prep and can manage it with a job and if at all there's any issue i can always ask for study leaves I'm not telling you that this is the path for you but this is practical. You are 24-25 now and being a girl you'll soon be seeing marriage proposals if you need the courage to even stand up for yourself then financial freedom is a must. Being from science background the other exams aren't 180° turn for you rather revision of old concepts Understand what you want to do in life UPSC is just one such way. If helping others is your goal then maybe upsc might've enabled you to help 1000 if not Upsc then try helping 100s or even a single person. Upsc cannot and should not ever be the destination. Please don't turn it in to an unhealthy obsession And main bhi yahi hoon fir se acchi taiyyari k sath dono agle saal dete hai. Tb tk thoda time nikal k kuch aur soch logi toh bura nhi maan jaegi exam.

Even this was my second attempt, I also scored around 87 marks. I attempted 95 questions I feel because this year's paper was like state PCS Question and directly 4 options, which made it more factual I feel given the fact this was your 4th attempt , your mains must be prepared and prelims basic foundation is ready. you can prepare with less time, so I think you should focus on CAT, Banking or other exams which will give you job security. And further keep attempting this with full vigour. This year 2023 UPSC AIR 83 is a girl who couldn't clear 6 prelims But in 7th attempt secured 83 rank. 😃😄 , when we look at struggles of others we feel relaxed that our struggles are not as intensive as others. So go out take a break and come with a Bang And talking about attempt sake, Gunjita Agarwal in top 100 rank , 5th attempt and first 4 attempts couldn't clear prelims but in 5th in top 100 So life goes on Mona , do us I would recommend you to go to Vipassana Retreat for 10 days, its free register there and attend the course. You would come out stronger

Get a job for your internal upheavals i.e., IBPS, SBI and RBI as you are from economics and csat level match banking reasoning and quantitative aptitude. Also because they provide huge vacancies. And keep on your journey for your dream an IAS officer. As UPSC is a gamble until you are mentioned in the final list. So fetch a job that you can have with ease , one can't be sure about a service which is decided by anyone else like UPSC. Even the toppers in cse can't appear to cse again to even qualify the 1st stage. Having a vast experience and knowledge one can get many jobs after preparation of upsc cse.... So don't be soo small for your self... U already know

Exactly, local politicians will always interfere in your work and blackmail you even when you are corrupt, they will buy Mercedes but you wont be able to buy even a Fortuner. No holidays or vacations, even Income tax inspector is better in my opinion, because he faces no trouble in vacations or in life

Okay the same story as yourself... Graduated in 2020 given first attempt in 2021 got 43.05 Due to various problems couldn't able to focus on it's preparation Tried some other exam.. Cleared AFCAT, CDS twice.. Couldn't able to make it. Now I'm 26 way worse than you😅... Started preparation for plan B as UPPCS in January and some other state PCS... Applied for civil services as mine 2nd attempt...fortunately in the list scoring around 105 Advice - if you want to continue this journey find your flaws in prelims preparation... Practice as much MCQ as you can ( for static) of other examination conducted by UPSC as well... And most importantly start giving your state PCS.. You are way young.. Once and for all give your best in plan B... You are in dilemma cause of fear.. Overcome it first.. make a plan for future and stick to it.. Questioning and doubting yourself is a part of journey.. I do it much frequently.. Believe in yourself.. Yaha prelims ke baad bhi same hi situation hai logo ke..so keep going.. And again state pcs is not a bad option with UPSC. I had not suggested it as per your age but as you are already in your 5th attempt .. It's necessary from my side if I'm in your situation utilise your acquired knowledge in a field you are much familiar with.

It's my 3rd attempt but not in the list despite the efforts that i have made. I am planning to give SSC CGL for Divisional Accountant post where i can get study time. So that i can get secure both financially and mentally. I will prepare UPSC again with fresh and hunger mindset. I have left with 6 attempts more and 8 years. But if you think you're ok financially and with your mental health then you can continue your preparation friend. It's just my suggestion, think 360 degree with both pros and cons and decide wisely. I guess you should give exam focus on mains but you can still prepare for Cgl . you’re 24 I’m 28 given 3 attempts but still couldn’t make to list . You can give 3 months to cgl as it will also overlap with cast to some extent . You’re well read in GS .Focus on math CA and reasoning.

Dont think of getting into other govt service just focus on mains … prelims kya hai next year nikal hi jayega lekin mains ka tayyar takho ki jab bhi prelims nikle seedha fir final list me naam ho … agar abhi you will think of doing some job than aapki 4 saal ki mehnat pe pani fir jayega abhi ek attempt or do … mere ko ek baat batao dusri job mil jayegi to usse konsa aap ambani ban jaogi and me bata raha hu bahut mushkil ho jata hai job ke sath tayyari karna bas sunne me accha lagta hai me khud janta hu its very tough …. Aapki 4-5 saal ki mehnat pe pani mat ferna dusra job leke sahi bata raha hu …or iski kya guarantee hai dusri job ki tayyari karogi aap wo aapko mil hi jayegi Sab plan B ki baat karte hai are mereko ek baat batao Plan B koi halwa hai kya ki log aapke liye baithe hai ki ye lo plan B plate me saja ke uske liye bhi to aapko din raat 2-3 saal mehnat karni padegi tab jake nokri lagti hai. Plan B wali jobs me already log mehnat kar rhe hai to phle unka selection hoga na baad me apna number aayega logically hai ek dum …. To baat ye hai ki please abhi plan B ka mat socho just focus ok mains yar …. Kya aapka mains tayyar hai optional ready hai are you sure ki mains me 850 aa jayege ….. agar haan to or practice karo agar nahi to prelims me ho bhi jaye to kya fayda Meri baat maano just focus on mains … sab accha hoga

Go For State PCS. If you're good in aptitude(what's your csat score btw), you can try out SSC CGL along with PCS, this year there are 17k vacancies and its posts are very good. Also subordinate civil services also offer good career option in public service, explore them as per your state, UP has plenty of them.

@@Study_upsc_mains oh dear that's not so impressive (but still look at the syllabus of CGL, solve some pyqs and see how it pans out). What about higher studies -- like the Masters, UGC-NET, PhD; route which will take you to teaching profession. See after giving 3 attempts it's important to think practically and look for backup. B eing 24, you're still young to try UPSC for another 2-3 attempts, but you've to ask tough questions to yourself about past 3 years {87 is a commendable score. What about mains prep?} The answer lies within yourself. There should be no shame in looking for alternate career choices.

I'm also going through the same confusion it was my 3rd attempt in first 2022I scored 50.59 in second 2023 78.27in gs but couldn't qualify csat after that took mmp of edarthi and with help of satyam sir prepared mains and from Jan onwards enrolled in nirvana of edarthi followed satyam sir and revised many times as possible but lastly couldn't qualify prelims again because of my own silly mistake overexcitment, not reading question properly was scoring 85-88 range now have lost moment of studies puzzled whether to go for mba for continue with Upsc people are suggesting to go for state pcs for other exams also now my family has lost hope on me because the exam exam is so uncertain...

Do master in economics and prepare for NET JRF , you will make it. Along with this give 4-5 hours for UPSC as well on a daily basis. Don't leave UPSC at the same time go for PG and NET JRF as well . If a person with a job can clear UPSC then you can also do it with your college. And the most important thing is that you are not going to start from zero you just have to revise and practice so you can definitely do it. One more thing do you PG with sincerity and it will be very helpful while preparing for NET JRF .

Your failures is almost same as my(4 successive prelims failure)but one thing is i am struggled lot for CSAT in last 3 attempt despite clearing GS but this time becomes reverse i am able to get csat 100+ but GS i got 84 to 86😢😢 I am also completely shattered by seeing this result but what i realised that there is no way to stop here my next steps would be 1 i dont want to give up this .give one extra chance by complete dedication 2 simultaneously preparing other exams by taking aside 2 hours daily for exta topics 3 extra book reading for taking care of mental balance which is becoming more vulnerable by this 4th attempt

Nothing happens, sometime things are not in favour of you because may be it is not in our deatiny, ur are from science background, even if you are not able to made ( that should never happen) but you have a lot avenues prepare from some other exam, it will be lot easy for u, as you have read gs, you have just maths for other competitive exams, that too is easy, why to cry and ary, when you have studied maximun thimgs which come in govt exam

I gave 5 pre. And i am one of the serious Student. (This year i didn't gave it). First attempt 2017 - gs 83( cutoff 105) csat cleared. Second attempt 2018- gs 96.6 missed by one marks, csat cleared. Third attempt 2019- missed cutoff by 2 marks in GS csat cleared. Fourth attempt 2022 - gs 118 (cutoff 84) csat failed by 0.03 marks. Fifth attempt 2023 - gs 112 (cutoff 75), csat failed by 1.3 marks. This year 2024 i filled only IFoS - gs 102-105 from various answer keys, was clearing the CSAT this time. But still couldn't find my name in IFoS list. Next year will be my last attempt both age and attempt wise in CSE. What am i doing? Completed MA in history. Presently in third semester of LLB. Learning various languages as part time hobby. Started giving exams of state PCS of various states...wrote 11 mains and gave 3 interviews in various state pcs like rajasthan, haryana, bihar, up etc. i agree i didn't gave my full focus on state pcs due to upsc involvement. But this is what it is. (Can't give and never gave army exams or police exams or even dy sp posts in state PCSs due to height issues.) So best option is to move towards state pcs exams. you'll already be in the same route...there shall not be any deviation except some state questions. You have age which is on your side..even if you give UPPSC and qualify it at your age...you can become DM for 20 years. UPSC is charm i know, but that charm of public service and involvement like DM remains till one remains DM which is usually for 7-8 years...after which they get promoted. Just see the return state pcs is offering you. -Home state. -Preference given to state officers while allocating field postings. -You can remain on field postings for max no. of years. So my suggestion you should also give state PCS. Don't get obliterated from the journey of upsc...next year fill just IFoS form that will train you to be in the cycle of UPSC and current etc which will help you in 2026 5th attempt. if u filled the uppcs then go for it and crack the exam prelims is in oct and mains in jan mid it help u to be in produtive cycle and try 2000% and crack uppcs then dont give 25 upsc pre enjoy training and prepare for upsc 26 with pcs job . and if not up try any other state mppcs bihar pcs

Bro, relatives are right don't leave your UPSC Journey. But start giving other exams as well like CGL, CAPF etc. We cannot stick to one exam only. Once you will get a job then you can prepare for UPSC wholeheartedly. And if you have taken CET of Haryana then start preparing 56/57 Group exam like Excise inspector, Patwari etc Don't be sad dear. Failure are part of journey. In the upcoming years you will surely crack UPSC as well.🙂😊💯 Just regain your energy and start takling other exams as well and don't Quit UPSC journey prepare simultaneously.
