HERE NESS AND PAULA if you do GENO mode in section 2) and if you spare frisk or kris Susie and Noelle's frisk joins the team and the HARDEST UNFAIREST COMPLICATED BOSS FIGHT HAPPENS and who is it remember how to frisk mode ended: Gaster talked to you you must show gaster kris, Susie, and Noelle (I hope this is the last time saying their names) And Gaster was Angry he tries to kill them if you die! you have to start over from ink and error fight! gaster will steal bosses from the past like flowey Ness and Paula ECT. and if he does that! YOU WILL HAVE TO KILL THEM AGAIN but it will be easier BC. you have more LV. Like 19-20 And if you win the game crashes and if you go back you will have to start from the very beginning and if you try to do it again a GENOCIDE Gaster will make every normal monster into BOSS MONSTERS. in the dusttale section, that attack isn't undodgeable, while not a lot of the attacks are fair in that game or really fun to play sometimes, that attack you showed can be dodged you just have to keep moving, the idea of the attack is it shows you how the attack works and then covers the attack up with a mask that's the same color as the bullets, the mask itself doesn't hurt you so the thing hitting you in those attacks is the bone itself

Interesting to see Storyshift or Undertoad's controversies weren't brought up since in my opinion, they are pretty significant in terms of how the original creators dislike of other fan content of the AU that doesn't properly represent the original work. Especially with Voltra wanting no takes on Storyshift what so ever. Also interesting to note that Undertale Green and Understory are in the process of being remade/remastered as a whole, since Undertale Green plans to have major changes to the first two chapters like rewrites for characters and a wider scope, and I think the same is for Understory aswell. Also don't know how you missed this but Don't Forget is not only planning on having an update that will have more story focused content and such, but also get it's own game that's singleplayer and basically a deltarune fangame. Don't Forget has went through many many changes throughout it's development from 2016, multiple rewrites and redesigns from RickyG upping his standards and wanting to be more unique which means he leaves quite a lot of unfinished stories behind. Very good video however that covers some great misconceptions and topics. Also Undertale Yellow is going to be completed and releasing this upcoming winter too.

Undertale Yellow is the only Undertale fangame I've ever bothered playing because of how well it was made. Being in development since at least 2016 and being fully released not too long ago, it's on par if not better than Undertale itself imho. The gameplay, art style, sprite work, story and sound track are all beyond phenomenal. Also, cowboy underground (aka The Wild East)

Fun fact about Horrortale. It's meant to be a continuation of a Neutral run of the main game, where Frisk goes through the Underground as normal, maybe killing a few monsters, and eventually kills Asgore and stops Omega Flowey, the human souls are lost in the ensuing fight, and Frisk then leaves. Leaving the Underground at square one with their escape plan and without a king, hence Undyne taking over as queen. Specifically, if you get a Neutral ending where Sans tells you that Toriel returned to rule, attempted to enstate a policy to view humans as friends, then Undyne led a rebellion against her for enforcing such a law and forcing her to retreat back to the Ruins, that's the ending Horrortale follows.

Two things. 1) Undertale Yellow is probably the first fan thing I've had any interest in in a long time and I'm so glad it was finished, great game. 2) No, regular turn-based combat isn't bad. It may not be your thing, but to imply that it's objectively bad is just wrong. There are SO many purely turn-based games that have a lot of strategy involved. Just look at the SMT games, Etrian Odyssey, hell, Pokémon can also fit there depending on how you go about playing the game. Not every game benefits from real-time combat or real-time elements, and some would actively be hindered by it. It's actually kinda annoying how you keep calling turn-based combat as a whole braindead when many games actively disprove that. Just say YOU don't like it and move on. Anyway, obligatory RIP Overtale, still sad about that even about 6 years later. Lol.

I can confirm that the fandom did twist my au to there liking or at least the one character they cared about being my sans from my au called toasttale while fanon toast sans has a single move and a design canon toasttale goes into a powerful being creating there own universe and dieing there and making a being to replace them being the creator which he then went on to make toast sans this is a very simplified version of the toasttale story but i just wanted to mention this the actual toasttale story has 4 chapters but i was never driven away from the fandom just because of the fans ruining one of my characters most fans of my work don't even know about any of the other characters in toasttale or it's story so yeah i know this is nowhere near the scale of what happened to other aus but just thought i should mention my experience

Neat video, since I don't see many people covering this topic outside of ut fandom ut fan projects and such. I have some toughts/few cents to add on whole on ut fangames stuff since I have been in ut fandom for a pretty damn long time now. First being in regards of many cancelled ut fangames out there. I think the other reason besides it being somewhat hard to do (because of all coding, making assets, coding motivation, interest and such) is because most often then not they were done by like teenagers/kids who weren't really experienced in stuff like this yet. I don't think any teenager or kid would want to work on some of the hard/ambitious stuff for very long. At some point they switched to doing stuff in Scratch and similar stuff since it was generally like easier. But it didn't allow much room for advanced stuff, only like battle encounters which leads to the next point. At some point in time, certain large part decided to focus on doing geno related content only. Specifically last corridor sans like boss fights, which eventually lead to some bad rep, since some people got annoyed at like unoriginality and banality of it. Didnt help there was some drama related to one of projects of it. but that is different can of worms i dont want to mention here Regardless of some questionable stuff and generally average/bad fangames, I am kind of glad ut fans to this day try doing it. It really shows their passion for the game. Besides, there are actually very cool fangames/projects out there like Undertale Red, Bits and Pieces, TS!Underswap and Inverted Fate's battle encounters and others. I think once Undertale Yellow gets released, that it will motivate people on doing fangames and like getting better at stuff like coding and such. Heh, one of the reasons that motivating me into making pixel art more was because of projects such as Undertale Bits and Pieces to get me better at my craft. I think thats a positive thing from what I see. (also fun fact, person behind Undertale Red, taxiderby became a coder for Deltarune chapter 2. Who would think that someone making an ut fangame would later go and help toby in deltarune. I surely didnt.) So yeah thats all I have to add. I would also recomend checking Undertale True Geno out since my pal works on this.

You may have to look up how to get a special kind of armor before you play though, if you're not confident in your abilities to beat a Very Difficult boss fight (either route).

I just wanted to give my quick thoughts about Deltarune and the whole not wanting to play it until its finished. Personally, I think it's okay to play them even if the game while it isn't finished (at least it's free!) because while there's an obvious over arching story, each chapter is so self contained and alot happens in them, I kinda like spending all this time between chapters to kinda think about them, explore them, and kinda dwell on them for a while. I like those gaps between chapters. My worry when the game does come out and all the chapters drop at once, I'll marathon through the game and I'll lose the experience I enjoyed when I was able to kinda just sit and think about one chapter at a time.

I get that. I played Undertale in a very weird way. I got the message of the game and thought to myself. I have to leave these characters alone. Let them have their happy ending. The same way I feel about Deltarune. I am going to play it once or twice and then I am going to leave alone. Not because the games can't be replayed but because I just want to keep that emotional connection intact.

After I beat Undertale, I was so moved, I moved my save file into a flash drive and keep it safe because I like to think that by doing it that way, I'm securing everyone's happy ending. So yeah, with Deltarune, I totally get where you're coming from! I don't know what's different with Deltarune, but I still have this strong emotional connection, and to me it kinda feels like I'm checking in on some friends every now and then to see how they're doing so far.

Hey i'm no JRPG person but recently replayed one that i played abit as a child and it's character abilites are surprisingly decent and fun despite the Japanese to English translation being ok-ish. Although i can see why raw turn-based combat can be boring.

This video was great! I've been craving a history video for UT for a while. There's so many controversies, events, and beautiful labor intensive projects that have been made. The fandom has created some of the most meaningful things I've ever seen, and some of the worst. I love it and it's so interesting hearing about the years of work that's been put into the world. Before this video the only fangame I knew was fully done and released was Undertale Yellow. It's lovely to see this much effort dedicated to covering them.

Noticed Underfail section, that fangame is based on an already existing AU made by a spanish speaker youtuber called DeiGamer (who got outed as a pedo btw lmao) It was supposed to be a parody of the original Undertale but the AU went a little bit too far and it just wasn't a joke AU anymore just random bullshit specially with the Chara (named "Chora" here)

Honestly your opinion on visual novels is purely subjective. I remember playing an Undertale visual novel (sorry that I can’t say it’s name I played it 3 years ago) that had a pretty engaging story. This was a fully finished game and it even had a second installment in production no idea if they finished it though.

If the story is engaging and if the decisions are engaging and if the pacing is fine and if the visuals fit the story you can have a good visual novel. Most visual novels have bad pacing, visuals that don't fit, are not engaging and decisions that are either useless or meaningless. Subjective? Yes. Support by personal experience? Yes. How many visual novels have you played in your life? 10? 20? I have played over 50 and I can say with certainty most of them suck.

I know you gave PS!Outertale quite a lot of flack here, and even compared it to the likes of Undertale Orange and thought it would end up okish quality due to how much it borrowed from the source material. But ever since the second area demo released of it, that probably couldn’t be farther from the truth. Sure it’s not going to completely blow you away and be a completely new experience from Undertale, but it kinda subverts your expectations on this being a full on reskin, because there are some really cool elements, including a new hidden route and genocide route with a much different story than the original. As of 2024, the full game is about 80% complete and is nearly finished, and compared to it's initial beginnings, as in when it is shown in this video, it has changed a lot and improved a lot that make it even more of it's own unique experience and it has a lot more replay ability than what Undertale had, with many different variations on neutral and pacifist combined. Including a plentiful of original content in the later half of the game on neutral and pacifist by themselves.

But the originality in this area is much bigger than the previous two as it introduces some new mechanics and makes a significant amount of changes from the original.

The fangame is on track to being completed at this point, as it's had a fourth area demo released back in May 2023 alongside many improvements to earlier areas and is roughly 80+% complete now. But considering it should only take until Spring 2024 for the game to be complete, then it's best to wait for that, since there will still be many changes to earlier areas. It's defiantly going to be a pretty special project for also releasing close to Undertale Yellow. Though it's not going to have as big as an impact as that game due to still mainly being tied to Undertale as a whole and not being a full on new experience for most players. Also must say this video still holds up very well a year later, and I have yet to see another Undertale fangame video of this scope done by anyone else that doesn't just cover single battle fangames and the like.

There’s recently been some big drama from within the team of those projects, which has effectively not only restarted progress for Underswap and Underfell but also caused most of the team to leave. Outertale was also never worked on throughout all of this. So those projects are in a limbo state for now and it’s pretty uncertain if anything more will come from them, they are leaning towards cancellation.

Damn im late to this party. Im surprised Dusttrust didn't show up at some point in this, seeing as it has an extensive history behind its still ongoing development with multiple reboots, controversies, and even though you don't pay too much attention to the music of these projects, this au helped put the concept of "edgy sans metal theme" on the map. Not only that, but as niche as the AU is, i have seen way more than my fair share of takes on Dusttrust actually kind of getting off the ground. It's still up in the air if any of them will stick the landing, but i can name a solid three of them i think are very likely to actually be finished, that being Preleak, Canon and Scarlet Flare. The "canon" game has been in off and on development for almost four or so years last i checked, with countless restarts and a few change of hands. However, with its newest rendition, i can confidently say it might finally be finished and released within this year, or early next year, and having been here since day one of its manifestation, it feels like an end of an era is coming for a select portion of the fanbase. It's a very strange thing to say, but I feel genuine sentimentality for this dumb little Sans fight. I feel like i watched it grow up into it's own thing, past being a derivative mess into a somewhat better and more interesting mess. Hell, if you look at how much work has gone into this AUs creation over the years, it makes for a genuinely inspiring tale, literally built out of the determination and ironclad wills of the fans it has congregated over the years. Im not gonna get into the psuedo philosophical stuff about how the au has underlying, melancholic self aware themes or what have you though, we'd be here all week lmao. Still, if there were ever a fan project i can say has had genuine love put into it despite its flaws, Dusttrust is that very project. And i fucking love it because of that. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

well done video. However i wanna quickly give my take on something you mentioned in the Controversies chapter. If i understand you think that fanartists should expect that their work and AUs get twisted themselfs and that therefore a annoyence is understandable but it should have been obvious. From the stories you told i see a pattern of poeple creating a AU, that AU being very popular and other fans twisting it further. I think the main issue in these cases would be not that the og work gets twisted or something but rather that it isnt made clear enough that these changes (like making underswap sans more kid like) werent made by the creator of the AU. It is a twisting of the art but in these cases the actual intend of the creation is getting lost.

Even very well received executions of the Turn Based Battle Systems like Pokemon the concept is barely driven beyond "press a to continue" but status-effects and super-evolutions. Sorry, these are not furthering the turn based battle systems and given that most Pokemon games need to made harder by self imposed rules it shows how badly it is executed. Persona seems to really try to alleviate a lot of those issues and further the genre but even those games have their pitfalls.

Well, in a card game, you don't have to mash a button through random encounters to level up so that your stats are sufficient so that you can finally beat a boss that usurps most of the mechanics that you have been though through the game cause designers love to just give up on bosses and just make them immune to everything. Compared to a card game where you don't need to repeat the same action over and over again and both parties can adept to their opponent's tactics before and mid-fight. Don't know about you but one seems less boring than the other :)
