This kid's opening spiel has been part of our household since we visited Warwick Castle in '96. Back then, our 9-year-old mispronounced the kingmaker's name as "Richard Nevilles," so that has stuck. We can recite that prologue, word for word, and often do. We loved visiting Warwick and stayed at a B&B which was converted from the gatekeeper's lodgings just outside the castle. It snowed the afternoon of our first visit, but early holiday hours cut the tour short, so we arrived the next morning to find the sun shining and the snow already disappearing. It was a magical experience and lives on to this day. In our family, "It's a Richard Nevilles day!" remains code for a day of gorgeous weather. Today is just such a day, which prompted me to come look for this recording. Thanks for posting it.

What a fabulous story! As Richard Neville is my wars of the roses hero, I am going to adopt your lovely tradition: every glorious day is going to be a Richard Nevilles day for me too. ❤

A Warwick! A Warwick! It was more likely the legend of his father in law, Richard Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick, rather than Salisbury that drove him on. Richard Neville was Earl of Warwick in right of his wife and she commissioned The Beauchamp Pageant, a celebration of all Richard Beauchamp's glory. It is his 'golden' tomb in St Mary's and it is known that Richard Neville wished to be buried there too, though he was interred in the Neville mausoleum of Bisham Abbey, along with his brother John, after the disastrous battle of Barnet. Great to hear this again, thanks for sharing.

An inaccurate fact during the commentary. It was York that had the white rose and Lancaster the red, not the other way round as stated.

I had the cassette (!) recording of this from Warwick Castle back in the day! And there was an apology on the packaging pointing out the error!

@@anne-marielewis5729 Yes, I did too but somehow my copy did not have the erratum with it.

I can't help but sympathise with Warwick after being sidelined by Edward but God knows what he was thinking when he turned traitor and sided with Margaret of Anjou in an effort to totally undo everything he had worked for prior to Towton
