Loved the video, but plantations always make me sad because of what they represent in terms of slavery. History is history, but we need to remember both the good and the bad about the past. I'm sure that most of those plantations were built and prospered on the backs of slaves. 😔
@storychasing3 жыл бұрын
Kate Burkes 😊 I couldn't agree more Kate. I've visited another one and trust me...you'll see what happens. I was royally pissed at this one place and called out one of the historians for them trying gloss over the negative impacts of slavery to humans and those enslaved. She tried to tell me this rosey story and I wasn't buying it. They had this beautiful big picture of descendents of the slaves and the masters family in one picture together as if everything was ok. Maybe it is, but I was so irritated by their depiction of it all. So I asked if the family who profited off the 800 slaves they owned transferred any of that wealth to the descendents. She couldn't say. You'll see it in an upcoming video, not her, because they wouldn't let me film in the "main house", but I narrate what happened.

Great points Kate & Amber. I think we can see these monuments to our past as both beautiful in their architecture & location & admire the wood & bricks that make up these structures, but also remember the bloody hands that erected & laid them. Be in awe of the crops that once inhabited these plantations, but remember the men, women & children who plowed, sewed & harvested them. Acknowledging the whole truth about how these plantations were utilized respects the memory of the all the people who were a part of them.

@@storychasing would you mind acknowledging the people who actually built a lot of the places you go to? You typically glorify the slave-master but not the work done by the slaves to build so much of the south.

@@404_skynotfound7 So pleased that you mention the slavery that afforded the property owners free labor.
@storychasing3 жыл бұрын
@Kiara you're correct. I could have acknowledged that aspect. Absolutely. I want to be 100% clear though, this is my first time at a plantation so to say that I "typically" glorify the slave-master" is not accurate and have never done that. I'm 100% against slavery and you'll see that even more clearly in an upcoming video of another plantation were I confronted a historian about information. It was disgusting. If you've seen any of my other videos, you'll know that I'm also against Thanksgiving and the glorification of the whites and Indians giving thanks for whatever the historians have decided to call "peace" when Indians were actually killed and moved off of their own lands by white settlers. It makes me angry.
@404_skynotfound73 жыл бұрын
@@storychasing I was referring to your general time in the South. You travel to a lot of cool places and are great at showing your audience that. What I am saying is that there is a huge history that tends to be eroded. Almost every stop you’ve made in this part of your tour has included a historical site of some sort. The erosion comes from a lot of people who visit these places and appreciate the architecture and the nature but minimize how these places came to be. What I meant by slave owners is the plantation owners and the White landowner that often gets all the credit for how beautiful the property was built or how gorgeous the landscape is. All I was asking was that it be acknowledged that a lot of the things you point out were built by the less fortunate and often exploited since most will never know the names of the actual masons. For example, “this architecture is amazing. But this was built during the slavery era. It’s sad that we will never be able to give credit to the proper people but this is a gorgeous area.” Obviously, I’m not asking you to focus solely on this aspect but the small token of acknowledgment means A LOT.

I really and truly hope you put on your list all of the beautiful and I mean beautiful springs we have here.
