Passenger Captures Frightening Moment on Cruise Ship

Passengers panicked as a Norwegian cruise ship was rocked by a strong gust of wind as it departed New York City.
Anthony Ciaramello captured this video from inside the ship, showing injured passengers and flying objects.
Representatives from Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed to ABC News its Norwegian Escape vessel was hit by a “sudden, extreme gust of wind” at 100 knots (115mph), causing a tilt towards the port side.
The cruise line confirmed several people were injured and treated by the ship’s medical staff. The number and extent of injuries were not confirmed.
Ciaramello told Storyful he was watching a movie with other passengers when the ship started to sway.
“I went flying as it tilted and landed on my stomach and slid like 20 feet and smashed into a guard rail in the middle of the floor.
“I actually thought I was going to die.”
The ship was reportedly heading to its first stop to Port Canaveral in Florida to begin a seven-night cruise.

I love the fact that he tried to look out the window, but it was night time. Do people know just how PITCH BLACK the ocean is at night? you can't see ANYTHING. Even if a giant Rogue Wave is coming towards you, there is no way you can see it. That's why the ocean terrifies me, especially at NIGHT. The ship suddenly listing from really strong winds is rare, though winds tend to be a major foe of big ships.

I was on this sailing, on the NCL Escape in 2019, and it just came up in my feed. I am glad someone filmed it! It was fine! Yes, it was windy and the ship was moving about but we enjoyed it. I will say: those couches in the atrium are HEAVY and they were moving pretty good there. The doors to the outside were closed/locked, and lots of water was coming in (carpet soaked, dripping down elevator shaft) but it did not detract from a great trip.

I crossed the North Sea on a ship in a force 9 gale. You can see the sea dropping to what looks like all the way to the seabed, then rising as high as a mountain. The ship was being thrown about like a toy. To be honest it didn’t bother me too much. The crew were pretty calm so I felt somewhat reassured.

I served on Frigates in the Navy. These people have no idea. The "scary" rolls they were taking were our daily norm. We were sent into a hurricane for search and rescue and we averaged 35 degree rolls. Worst roll on that trip was 42 degress. Guarantee the cruise ship never went past 10 degrees.

What I find so strange is how unsafe everything is on a modern cruise ship. Everything falls and breaks and the furniture could kill you in a storm. Nothing is nailed down or especially designed for a ship, not even places to put the ketchup. And then people seem surprised that they are on a ship. @@naesjpg yeah...give her a break... it's not yet a total emergency situation and she's already sitting on the ground, not moving. What if the crew orders everyone on deck to the safety rafts? She'll then need extra personnel to be moved there, might causing safety issues for other passengers. If you're going for a boat trip, don't these people think about what could happen beforehand?? Yes, it is loud and glass is shattering etc. But there's nothing to be worried about at this moment. That might be a little heavier sea than usual, but people in much smaller boats would still be working on deck to catch fish. It's just new to most persons on a cruise ship, when heavy sea happens.
