Hey Marie, I'm new to storyline and am enjoying your gamification tutorial (I am learning a lot). I am running into a problem that I can't seem to figure out. Up until the part where I create the win layer, my storyline preview is reviewable. However, when I add the win layer with the triggers of ending the game, my storyline doesn't load the preview screen and crashes. Again, If I delete the you win layer and preview the course, it works just fine! Do you have any work arounds or possible solutions? I've read that perhaps its the shapes used that can cause the crash. Or perhaps it's the exit button. I am not entirely sure but would love your support! Thanks!

Hi, I created this game according to this video but it gets stuck in word 9/10. Can't figure out why. Asked their support but have not received any answer yet.

Hi Marie-Jo. I've just started with Storyline, so this may be a really newbie question. I want to set this to count up (players are trying to do something as fast as possible, to get the lowest time among colleagues, but I don't want them to run out of time). I get how to make that change. But what I'm wondering is whether I have to make my timeline 5 minutes long (or the longest I want them to take) or if I can leave it at the default (5 second) and the timer will keep working anyway. Also, will it keep counting if they open the resources tab and open a document there, then come back to the slide to enter some info? I want to set it to stop when they've entered a couple of things from the resource. Hmmm, this is really specific. Totally understand if this is not "free" level help. :)

Hey KL, assuming I understand you correctly, here's how I'd do it. 1) On the game setup slide, set the timer to 0 instead of 60 2) On the countdown layer, keep the timeline at 1 second long, but whenever it ends, you ADD 1 to the timer instead of subtracting 1. 3) Disregard the whole "Time's up" game ending, because they'll never run out of time. As for whether it will keep counting while the person jumps away to consult a resource, it can. You just have to put a timer layer on that slide too, and it will just keep adding to the Timer variable. I've never tried that specifically, but I'm sure there's a way. Please let me know how it all turns out! :)

Thinking about it some more - for the second part (keep counting when the player jumps away from the game slide), I would explore the possibility of putting the timer on a slide master. Have fun!

Thank you for this tutorial! I’m running into an issue with the game stopping at the Decoy 2 slide. This occurred a few times when testing, it was a different number each time. However when retesting the previous numbers it stopped at worked fine in other attempts. Any suggestions? Thank you!
@MarieJoLeroux Жыл бұрын
Hey there! Hard to say without looking at your file, but I'd double check the triggers on Decoy 2, particularly the "equals" and "not equals" signs. If that's all good, then I'd check everything that came before on the Correct and Decoy 1 slides. Good luck!
@411anisha Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It was the “and” “or” verbiage on the Decoy 2 slide.

Good example of a game, but this is not Gamification. Shocked at times how Gaming and Gamification are being confused to be the same. You can create games for gamification, but Gamification does not require games. Gamification uses Gaming strategies such as high scores, badges, timing (fastest time, slowest time ) Team scores, Ranking tables so users can see where they rank against other individuals or teams. What you have created is a game, and it is an excellent example of how to use Storylines triggers. But this is not gamification. Storyline does not have the ability to produce gamification as users cannot access a Storyline module and see ranking tables of other users, badges of other users and times of other users etc. That requires a separate external engine.

I hear your points, but I don't wish to get drawn into a debate on the definition of "gamification" vs "game-based learning". To me, that distinction creates a false "either-or" dichotomy, which is misleading because a) it ignores a lot of experiences that fall in between the two camps and b) since the common definition of gamification is "the application of game elements to non-game settings", educational games ARE games yet can also be seen as a subset of the broader term "gamification". But again, I don't wish to have a definitional debate because what matters most is how to create an experience that positively impacts on learning outcomes - not what you call it. I do appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
