1:59 I think that's interesting. People here keep saying that Maria was either a cheetah or a serval. Cheetahs usually last 12 years in the wild and servals usually live 10 years in the wild, plus both species usually live for around 20 years in captivity. Considering Maria looks to be in her mid 20s during the film, it's possible that she clings to being human as if she were to go back, she would die of old age. Yeah, it's likely a lie by Muroe, but still.

In the novel, the part that fits into Maria wasn't much of a supporting character (let alone a love interest for Edward, Andrew's name in the novel), only there for Edward to discover that Moreau is 'Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs'. In the 1932 version, they moved the character into that higher position, hinting a very promising element H.G. Wells himself didn't consider; we call that 'Forbidden Love'. The novel was an allegory for politicism (unknowingly, Wells was more ahead of his time by predicting the Hitler concentration camps). 32 version was seemingly trying to focus more on a romance between Edward and 'Lota' as Maria was known as in this film. Lota, like Maria, looks like a normal human being than a talking cat standing on its hind legs who develops feelings for a guy who found himself stranded on her home, so Edward is absolutely clueless to her origins (Moreau claimed she was someone he found in Polynesia and raised). Lota was the very main thing in advertisements, so not only did we know she was going to later be revealed as a panther, but this 'Forbidden Love' seemed like a promising new idea for this adaptation of the book. However, when the two finally kiss, it's thrown away immediately after when Edward remembers the fact that he has a fiance, leaving Lota very lonely. Immediately after THAT it's finally revealed to Edward that she was a panther all along. The rest of the film was highly beloved, but the original adaptation missed out on a huge opportunity for even more timelessness. This film, they do live happily ever after, but Maria's cat heritage isn't discovered until literally the last 10 seconds, though it is great for a TwilightZone-like twist. The 1996 version featuring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer almost accomplishes it...until 'Aissa' is hanged during a battle between her and some rogue humanimals, this time leaving Edward lonely. Out of all the Big Three adaptations, the 1977 one did that concept the most justice.

@ *Mr. Blue Sky,* • thank you VERY MUCH for this info. ❤️ You've answered pretty much EVERY question I had about this film, (plus you've kindly included some extra tidbits, as a nice little bonus!) I *LOVE* reading comments like yours; yours are the type of comments that one gets the most out of, rather than the hundreds of random, generic comments attempting to be "witty" or "funny" that basically just copy every _other_ comment already out there. 🙄 Please *NEVER STOP* leaving these kinds of informative comments, which many of us viewers greatly appreciate because it saves us the trouble and time of Googling or Wiki-ing it, (which sadly can be a bit of a hassle when you are on mobile and having to switch between pages WITHOUT the freedom of being on a full-sized computer screen with tabs!) 📑 Also, (and you probably already know this, but ...) Please ignore commenter *Depisius T,* whom I suspect to be very, VERY, young... likely between the ages of 8-10 (at _most)_ because I have a child around that age and *Depisius T* acts _very much_ like some of my child's little friends. Your response to this child, *(Depisius T)* was INCREDIBLY kind, measured, and mature, which I have to thank you for. Sometimes we impulsively pop off to commenters like him without realizing that it's just a little kid with _no awareness_ who meant no real harm and simply hasn't yet learned to filter their thoughts.

Myself the 1932 Island of Lost Souls is probably my favorite adaptation of the original Wells story, I always remember some bits from it such as Moreau treating Lota as a piece of meat while she’s sobbing in anguish and Moreau is marveling that he’s actually created a beast man capable of crying tears, and he vows to press on with his work with his sentiment “This time I’ll burn ALL the animal out of her!” As well as Moreau’s final grisly fate at the hands of his creations in his “House of Pain.”

You can be certain that somewhere in many countries, ours included, there are people willing to do anything, to make some kinds of human/animal hybrids. This is not as farfetched as it once was. There surely must be feverish, intense research into creating hybrids that will have no legal standing in any court in the world, as a "person". Without having "personhood" anything is permissable to be done with them. Yes, I'm sure there are laws, mandating the destruction of embryos of hybrids. But, do we really believe that will stop anyone? Think of the vast potential of creating a non human working slave class of workers. Or, perhaps "super soldiers". There would be countless trillions of dollars of potential, just in patents, whatever was created. No government on earth could resist the temptations involved. Let's hope for humanitie's sake, that none of this will be accomplished.

It's actually surprisingly difficult to mess with dna like that. It's literal billions of years of evolutionairy data that you're tampering with, meaning that the smallest change in dna can completely alter things down the line in ways you never intended to (probably causing cancer). However, with retroviruses, we are getting close to being able to target cancer cells and eliminate them. Thus we are getting closer to using genetic manipulation to do our bidding, but it is extremely difficult. It would probably take a self learning AI to succesfully adapt DNA. And even then, when you change the DNA of one cell, that doesn't do much. So it has to be in millions of specific cells.

@@savedbychristsavedbygrace2049 Ah, yes, that would be another way to change some part of our DNA. I nearly forgot about CRISPR. I see that I have been unclear in my statement. It is indeed VERY easy to change someone's DNA. It's as easy as standing in the sun. The sun changes our DNA. The longer you stand in it, the more it changes, the higher the chance of you getting skin cancer. What I meant to say is that it is extremely difficult to change someone's DNA with an intended effect and no other effect. We are making progress as mankind, but this kind of technology is very unstable and dangerous. So we don't have many viable treatments of diseases that work by changing our DNA. As I said, DNA is very complex. But I am confused about the "they" you are talking about. Who is "they" according to you?

in many ways it is, but if you look at Monroe's viewpoint, this Andrew guy was dying and he saved him, then he went and slept with his wife/girlfriend and then destroyed the eco system that he has created. in truth he was the maker of their existence then someone came and challenged him on his own island, and again he does this not to create soldiers to conquer or to hurt anyone else so he is alone on an island in the middle of nowhere to do his own personal research by himself. So Andrew is the colonization force that tries to instill his morals and values into another culture as if he is the beacon of truth to challenge his rules and laws with his own that he brought from elsewhere.

@@enightc I found a few ways for this to be viewed as a list from, science and love and territory morals and ethics, Most of all I've always thought it was about sex .At the end I believe Dr Monroe was keeping her alive and everyone else got in the way. She was really the only good looking female on that island.

The original Wells story was a commentary on Darwin’s theory of evolution, which was still a pretty hot button topic when Wells wrote it in 1896, as well as a dark satire on religion and humanity.

So that’s not a Cheetah. I need to watch the film again to see if they call the cat a cheetah. Back when the film came out the average person probably would not know at all. Pretty sure it’s an Ocelot or Serval?

This was really from an African story I believe called Yakub loved Us (referring to the white race)It’s in the library of Congress and where the story idea came from. A centuries written story about black Egyptians and a black scientist who created a race to destroy black people (his own race he hated) and he taught them how to do it on an island and used his genius dna genetics. Sounds crazy but who knows. There’s an old saying there’s nothing new under the sun.
@MrBlueSkyof1607

The Yakub story might've been inspired by what the film is actually based on, an 1896 novel of the same name written by War of the Worlds author H.G. Wells.
