That and the 3 over 2 are pretty common in classical music, I believe ; funny thing about it, my piano teacher taught it as "one, two and three" and "one, two and three and four" (with a rythmic twist) and it does fit extremely well as then you play the 4 notes on 1, 2, 3, 4 and the 3 notes on 1, and, and (same with 1 2 3 / 1 and)

One thing that you didn't mention that I loved about the soundtrack - you're able to sit on the king's throne before grabbing his half of the soul. When you do, a short melody plays - the White King's theme, overlaid with the Knight's theme, both stripped down to their barest melody and played simultaneously, once and never again. When it comes to storytelling I think they peaked there. For all the fuss between you, everything you do and everything he did, the closest the Knight comes to interacting with the king is a brief moment's rest sitting on his throne, long after he's dead, before moving on. That detail is what got me to fall in love with this soundtrack in the first place.

For the longest time, I used to think that the poem was about the Pale King, but recently I realized that it's about Hallownest. "In wilds beyond, they speak your name with reverence and regre,t" - rumors of a vast, ancient kingdom spread far beyond the realm, bringing in many travelers and adventurers (hardly anyone from beyond Hallownest even mentions him). "Under palest watch, you taught, we changed, base instincts were redeemed" - the palest watch Monomon wrote of is the Pale King, for under his supervision did the kingdom change bugs. Though not in the game, the continuation of the poem very specifically addresses the kingdom, not the king: "(contd.)Within your corpse can still be heard the plaintiff cries of one,Who took our pain, and loss, and dreams inside itself to..." - Hallownest is very often referred to as a corpse, and how this kingdom is long dead.

I really love the White's Lady Theme. As You said, it is light but what I love the most is this part: 4:12. I don't know why but this higher part of the theme makes me cry. It sounds so nostalgic! I think, this music tries to show us, that even Queen tries to hide her past, she can't escape it. She is living now in her gardens, far away from the castle, in which she once ruled. She doesn't mention her husband, but it doesn't mean she will forget him and what he did to her. She will never feel relief because of running away than facing her nightmares. Idk if it sounds weird but I somehow felt that those three themes were similar, I just couldn't figure that out why. Thank you for that video and for explaining this subject further! Christopher Larkin did a great job creating this music.

I've been waiting for someone to analyze the absolutely breathtaking music in Hollow Knight and you, dear sir, delivered fabulously!! Before now I didn't actually notice the resemblance between Hornet's theme and the Leitmotif that appears in the White Lady and the Pale King's themes, so thank you for bringing it to light (get it, light?). However, I'm a bit saddened that you didn't mention the Pale Court theme. It's understandable, since it's the only song (that i know of, at least) that isn't actually heard in-game and it's only on the Gods and Nightmares album. I always thought that maybe the reason for it being left out was because it was so emotional, and it could've put too much emphasis on the story rather than the gameplay. Still, would've loved to hear your thoughts on this illuminating piece of music.

For the last video, I hope you analyze the main theme. I also call it the vessel theme, as almost all the instances of it that I've found have something to do with vessels. Broken Vessel, Sealed Vessel, and Pure Vessel - Pretty obvious connection. False Knight / Watcher Knight - These bosses are empty shells animated by something else, be it a maggot or a swarm of flies. Fungal Wastes - I have no idea why the theme is used here.
@otaku-chan48885 жыл бұрын
I have a few ideas about why Fungal Wastes uses the theme, but these are ultimately just my guesses. The main reason is probably because this area is where the game gets kicking. New mechanics, bouncy mushrooms, freaking Mantis Warriors and their range - and the entrance to the City of Tears. And lore. I believe the Fungal Wastes is the first area where the Pale King is mentioned. The Leg Eater talks about wanting to be king. The lore tablets talk about the Wyrm's prescience. A giant mushroom creature in the background says "Pale Wyrm...what good to foresee a demise unavoidable?" And most of all - Mister Mushroom, who is * cough* very, very important for the lore...if we could understand where cryptic messages stop and meta references begin.

Reminds me alot of the storytelling through leitmotiv in Final Fantasy IX. Specifically one of the main themes “A Place To Call Home“. The melody is played in a very specific set of places that are connected through their backstory. The game never explicitly tells this (it does tell about the backstory reason for it, but the fact itself is never mentioned. Its probably not relevant enough and keeps up the feel of mystery a bit) Yet, the fact that these places are connected in some way is communicated through the music on a level that there is no doubt, even if the player is not all that deep in the lore.

ik im 3 years late but id like to mention something i found interesting: the melody in the white lady starting at 0:38 (from the original ost or something close) to 0:44 can be heard again in the white palace at 3:36 to 3:45 in the lower strings, slightly changed. ive only noticed it recently and ive listened to both the tracks a hundred times, and thats the beauty of hollow knight's soundtrack. there are so many little details and motifs used that can go unnoticed by the majority, and even if it doesnt amount to anything lore wise, it still can connect two tracks in ways youd never expect

One of the most profound musical moments for me was during my first playthrough of the game when I fought THK for the first time. I went through the game without any story research and limited walkthrough help so it goes without saying that I had no fucking clue what was going on in the story other than "orange stuff bad". When I finally got to the final phase of the fight where he begins stabbing at the infection and the music shifts to that slow, sad string section halfway through the "sealed vessel" track, it had an insanely profound effect on my mindset of the game's story as a whole. Seeing this larger version of myself desperately stabbing itself and getting thrown around by the infection while this dirge-like song played really brought up an emotional reaction in me. It made me think less of how THK is the game's antagonist and more so that there must be something more going on in this world. It was tragic. I really felt bad for the knight while I was fighting him and when I finally killed him, I was in tears for a couple minutes while my mind just raced and raced over what just happened. I don't think that moment would have been nearly as impactful if the music wasn't done so perfectly.

For being a drummer, you are a goddamn good harmony analyst. This video's on hollow knight are just gorgeous. Thanks a ton!

I adore how all the other boss fights have fast and exciting music, while the hollow knight has a slow, melancholy theme.

Watching this stuff makes me wish I'd gotten more into music creation, I love this stuff. Listening to this soundtrack a lot you pick up on all the leitmotifs and everything but to see it laid out and analyzed like this is fascinating stuff.

was hesitant about clicking the video, thinking it was a different hollowknight vid that has been flooding my recommended recently, but once i figured it out... "SO I WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILL!!!" Immediate hype.

For all the time I spent falling, dying, and irl crying in the White Palace I can’t believe I never realized the motif, although I certainly picked up on the tone of a grandiose dream left to ruin described in the elegy.

It's not that the soundtrack hasn't been waiting to be explored, we were waiting for you to do it, because your analysis on vgm is amazing!

I was literally wanting a video talking about this game's music earlier today and here it is, less than a day old for me to watch :P

The Broken Vessels theme is honestly one of my favorite tracks in the game. It’s like a remix of the Title Screen, and it’s honestly so good when you take into account that he is just like you. A vessel, a failed one, overtaken and trapped by The Infection.

You just took words out of my mouth when you made the connection to the White Palace theme and the Hornet theme's main melody

Amazing! I really didn't notice those kind of details but your videos really reveal what kind of masterpiece is it. Also Hornet theme is one of the best string pieces ever written in my opinion. It makes sense that Larkin ispired by classical music by as someone who also listen to classical music I have to admit that I think he tops the greatest composers in pieces like "Hornet" or "The Mantis Lords".

Hollow Knight's uses of leitmotivs is fantastic and masterfully crafted. Few games made me feel so many feels with their soundtracks, namely Xenogears, Hollow Knight and the NieR series.

I definitely agree with you on this. I wish there were more videos about Hollow Knight's music and how it adds to the game. Hollow Knight definitely has some bangers man.

Thank you for this. The storytelling of video games goes beyond just the written words you read, and I would argue that the music of video games tells just as much of the story of the written work, if not more when done correctly.

Every time I watch one of these videos I get inspired to compose something new! I can’t express enough how much I love these!

This was an AWESOME video. I hope you can talk more about some of the other leitmotifs in hollow knight’s soundtrack- I love the theme of the vessels, especially when it is used as the climax to sealed vessel with that huge descending scale in the brass!

I really can't wait to hear what you come up with when Silksong comes out, given that music is such an explicitly featured element (the name, the 'silk and song' motif, the character designs based on bells).

Outstanding work as usual. Looking forward to the conclusion. :-)
